Funny story along the handicap lines. Buddy of mine's handicap has gone up recently because of poor play. But the last day of a better ball tournament this past weekend he shot 66 on his own ball with 7 birdies. Naturally everybody was giving him guano about it.
Well I've been playing pretty well lately and for grins have been plugging my scores into an online handicap calculator just to see what it spits out. The last time I played with this guy I went off for 9 birdies and took home all the money. So of course I was telling him after his 66 that the next time he's giving me strokes to which he quickly refused.
So we were discussing our respective handicaps, one thing led to another and we figured up what I would have had to shoot to beat him had I given him the difference in our handicaps. The number was 55. I could have easily shot a 56 to tie him however.
We all had another good laugh about that. But that's also why I never give people strokes according to handicaps. If you want to play for money then belly up to the bar and let's play straight up. Otherwise go play tiddlywinks.

I play a good bit at home with players with handicaps of 1-3.
Sometimes they beat me straight up, but not often.
I'd guess I average around 4 1/2 shots a round lower.
We had our 2 day medal play tournament this past weekend. 90 players of various abilities. Many good players from the area, but unfortunately a couple of the best had other plans that weekend.
I shot 69-68 and won by seven. 3-peat!
I can go back to selling sleeves of balls and Titleist caps without fear of ridicule for another 12 mos.
The phone did ring a good bit for lessons on Monday, so that's a plus.

I can't think of too many players (okay, one maybe) I know who play well enough off a handicap in the 4-7 range* where 66 is even in the remotest realm of possibility.
* (making "you" a +3 to +6 for illustrative purposes)

I just wouldn't give a golfer their full handicap in a big bucks match, that's all. Unless I knew for an absolute certainty they couldn't come close to their number.
