Maybe Tom Lehman? I dunno, I associate him with having a hell of a time on that hole recently for some reason. Maybe he only had like a quad, heh.

I thought it was last year but whatever, recently. I really just wanted to get the thread going again.

And Lehman is wrong.

I like the original idea for this thread. But it appears to have broken down a bit with folks looking things up and posting them and folks posting random trivia (like I plan to do). Another way to do this, is maybe put a time limit on the questions, so a stumper only lasts a day (or less).

Here's mine. The USGA did something spectacular/controversial *during* the 1979 US Open at Inverness. What and because of whom?

The planting of the Lon Hinkle tree to keep him from cutting the corner on a dogleg par 5. Hinkle still cut the corner despite the tree.

Once the grounds crew at Inverness were done with their work, they made sure the USGA got the invoice for the tree. Detailed nicely in one of John Feinstein's books.

Isn't the term "random trivia" a redundancy? Are we only supposed to post easy trivia questions?

Besides, I've been answering trivia questions for free here. I usually charge big bucks to do so!

I like your questions. I think we need a time limit when you stump everyone. I meant to object to people like me who post a trivia question without answering a question correctly (or having an answerer defer to them).

You are of course correct. I did not know that Feinstein wrote about it. I don't know why I remembered that today. They put a little cardboard sign on it that said "Hinkle Tree" or something (I remember from the broadcast). The other thing about that open that I think I remember (but I'm probably full of it), but I think Orville Moody led after the first round, or maybe 36.

shemp,

I agree that some of the questions have been really tough or obscure. I think that can be worked with by providing hints at the time or after a short time.

As for this question, I did know the answer but that's because of what a weird thing it was and I've read a lot about the game. For those who didn't know it they may find it interesting.

I don't disagree with a time limit or hint. This has been a good productive thread.

I'm pretty sure he wrote about it in "Open (Inside the Ropes at Bethpage Black)" and perhaps a mention of it in his prior book "The Majors" about the 1998 major championships. Both excellent reads. So much is learned about the inner workings of the USGA in "Open".

I have already demonstrated that I suck at trivia. But I do remember good scoring conditions in the final round last year so it couldn't have been on Sunday. This type of question should be worth multiple guesses so I will go with...

Woody Austin - because it would be funny to see his reaction
Billy Andrade - because I have tried using him as an answer several times now

Oh no, thread please don't die........

To try to kick this one alive again an easier one:

No scandinavian men have ever won a major. But which two has especially not won the British Open?

Jesper Parnevek - Came very close a couple of times.

Fredrick Jacobson - Only other scandinavian I could think of

I guess the question is who are the best two Scandanavian players then?

Along with those two.... Fasth? Johansson? Karlsson? Stenson? Fulke? Jarmo?

I guess I would say Jesper and Thomas Bjorn.

My intention was to find the two scandinavian players who were very much in contention for a win at the British Open, but did not win.

Thomas Bjørn died in a bunker and Jesper Parnevik made some bad choices on the last couple of holes taking him out of contention when Nick Price won in 1994, should at least have been in a playoff.

Over to you BSF.

Ok, the answer was Mike "Radar" Reid.

Next question:

Besides the United States, which country has the most players in the Top 20 of the World Golf Ranking?

Torn between two.

Australia - Scott, Ogilvy, and maybe Badds.
South Africa - Els, Rory, and probably Immelmann. Think Retief is currently outside the top 20.

Guess I'd have to go with South Africa.

Ok, I'm an idiot. Three countries have three players in the top 20. I meant to ask which has the most in the top 25, which happened to be England with 5.

ntnBO, you're up....

Wow, England does have 3 and 5. Never would have thought that.

Let's see now, question can't be too hard or too easy. Hmmmm......

OK, here's one of my favorites although it does lean toward to difficult side but not overly so.

Who was the first golfer to win 3 Masters?
