my only bitch is that that course is a frickin beast from the tips first thing in the morning with wet conditions...literally felt like the course was 8000 yards last time we played in the morning.

at least carts are off paths finally!
You need to introduce me to this buddy of yours. I enjoy free golf too. And I won't even bitch about the wet conditions :-P

Lol well obviously these foursomes fill up fast! I would be down to do a 2+2 group maybe at Aguila on a Saturday or something cheap and good. If u have a city card it's 27 to ride at 1 pm and we always finish

okay I will be on my annual mexico largemouth bass trip to mexico between xmas and new years...other than that I don't have a lot of plans so let's get something booked! I would prefer saturday since I have a standard foursome almost every sunday.

my suggestion is aguila for us to play unless someone has something better

Played Whirlwind yesterday. Course was generally good, weather was perfect, $55, carts of paths, greens were almost all the way back to regular speed.

Venue-wise, should look at a Troon property since the prices don't rise until mid-January or so and the rates are carts and range balls inclusive, whereas the muni rates are inclusive of neither (which I suppose doesn't matter if you are planning to walk, which I do not).

Speaking of munis, playing Papago on Saturday for the first time since the overseed.

Are we looking at a 1 day 18 hole thing, or something spread out over a couple days/rounds? I wouldn't mind trying for at least 36 holes, even if its just one day.

played Wildfire Faldo course yesterday with my buddy who works out there so another nice free hook up..

the course was in pretty good shape but greens still quite slow imo but I am kind of a snob. If I was paying $100+ I would hope they would be a little quicker by this time of the year but I suppose they just need a good frost to speed them up.

overall it was fun and I like the faldo layout as there is usually plenty of room to play.

played Moon Valley again last week and then Wildfire Palmer yesterday and both were quite fun. Wildfire Palmer was in awesome shape and the greens rolling really well. We teed off at like 1:50 PM and finished 18 as a threesome by 5 PM which was pretty sweet.

Golf courses playing quite a bit longer right now all these holes that I can get away with 3 wood in the summer need driver in the summer for sure!

played quintero on last sunday after all that rain and somehow it was NOT cart path only and the course was fantastic. couldn't believe how well that course took that storm and played. greens were lightning fast and it's a three putt paradise out there.

ended up shooting a terrible 81. my buddy shot 73 which is a great score there imo.

anyone else played anywhere recently?

I haven't played in over a month. Probably around 6 weeks. Leaving on Christmas to fly back to NC for a couple weeks. I'm taking the sticks so I'm sure I'll get a few rounds in......in the cold and wet conditions typical out there this time of year.

A few friends played Quintero last week and said it was just unbelievably slow, 5 1/2 hour round - coupled with the extremely long drive out there - and not fun at all. Total hacks playing in front of them and the course in general was jammed. Pity, but clearly they are finally pricing the course to get people to make the drive because this was the day after Christmas, a Wednesday.

So we still haven't done anything about a get-together, but I did renew my Troon card for this year so have that as an option, although it's really only marginally cheaper than golfnow.

Since last post have played Papago, Talking Stick North, Ocotillo, Vista Verde, Kierland, and Gainey Ranch, and Papago again tomorrow. Greens have been great across the board, with Vista Verde being the fastest of the bunch followed closely by Kierland.

yeah I am definitely spoiled at Quintero because we are usually first off. Our group of good golfers (all about 3-8 HCP) still take about 3:45-4:00 to get around there...can't imagine how long some hackers would take.

My buddy is the ranger out there sometimes and was telling me how slow it was playing out there lately but there really isn't much he can do obviously other than move a group up a hole but it's pretty much every group playing slow with a few fast groups mixed in.

We played ****ty orangetree yesterday...just avoid it. There's barely any grass out there.

My other buddies played WigWam yesterday and said it was phenomonal so I am hoping to head out there again soon.

How much was Vista Verde?

I get back to AZ tomorrow and I'm anxious to get out and play. 4 rounds of playing wet, muddy courses out here in NC was more than enough for me. Let's get something together.

played Legend Trail on Friday (cold as hell) and Moon Valley yesterday.

One of my buddies works in the shop and said it was super slow if we wanted to come out and play. It was freezing cold but the course was in really good shape just kind of narrrow in some spots if you didn't know where to miss.

Moon Valley was in really good shape yesterday and a blast to play. Not quite as cold as Friday and there was no one on the course so we flew around.

wigwam gold was confirmed pretty sick....an absolute beast from the tips but in great shape and greens are slick and all types of slope. tough track!

I am the WOAT at getting rolling with this. We really have to, ugh. Perhaps after the Super Bowl. It will be peak season but if you guys can afford $75 or thereabouts my Troon Pass will get us on a good course.

Haven't been out there in a really long time. It is definitely one of the rare older courses that hasn't been made obsolete. Then again 7600 yards or whatever will do that.

Last round was a couple of weeks back at Papago. Greens were holding as well as I've ever seen them and rolling great too. Bunkers may be getting a little thin though.

Just got invited to a free round at Silverado today. I'm not one to pass up free golf so obv I accepted. Any idea what I should expect? Decent course?
Golf in Phoenix Quote
01-23-2013 , 02:07 PM
lol, don't expect much but I guess it's reasonably fun. The front nine is a complete lauger and the back nine is actually decent imo. It's a very short course on a lot of holes but free golf is free golf.

Yeah, I'm not going there expecting to be blown away. But like you said, it's free golf so it has to be worth it. I don't have your hookups yet, to get free golf on these nice courses so I'm stuck playing goat tracks. Lol

yeah I am pretty damn spoiled...like I have said before I worked at Orange Tree for 5-6 years during school and met a lot of good connections and then those people move on to other golf courses and meet other people and/or work at other places and then it turns into having buddies that have a bunch of connections.

We are getting set up at Legacy this weekend for a cart fee so that should be solid. Love that place in the summer!

we ended up not getting out at legacy due to the rain they didn't wanna hook us up with anything so we ended up getting comped at Karsten on sunday. I hadn't played there for a few years so it was fun but that course is kind of a beast from tips these days. Back when I played it all the time it was a par 72 and now they turned two par 5's into hard par 4's so there's not a lot of scoring opportunities out there unless you are striking it solid.

The course was in pretty good shape considering the rain on saturday. Overall a fun time but some of those fairways are NARROW this year with the overseed but it doesn't matter much if you miss the fairway as the dormant rough is pretty easy to hit out of if you aren't on a side of a hill or behind a tree (which can happen pretty easily)

Karsten just makes me MAD like no other course anywhere. Course just bugs me for some reason.

I grew up right down the street from what is now Silverado, and it was a totally worthless wash, so it may not be much of a course (from what I've heard, never played it) but it's a lot better than the nothing that was there before. When I'm driving southbound on Hayden near McDonald I kind of keep an eye on that one short par-4 in fear of someone snap hooking their drive onto the road.

Silverado was decent enough last week. Nothing that blew me away, but I didn't hate it. There were some spots where the fairways were a little bare, and the whole course was a little wet. But the greens rolled decent overall, so I'm not regretting playing there.......especially for free.
