Appreciate it Tuq. Should we avoid the time were going? Would late October be better?

How would the weather be in late October Early November. Remember were CDN's so anything over 70 is great

I think earlier would be better. Like tuq said, try to catch a course right before they start preparing for overseeding and it should be in great shape.

Earlier just is not an option. So for us the best times are first week 0f Oct or early Nov

Well imo, first week of Oct would be better as there will probably be a few courses that haven't started overseeding yet that could be in great shape and cheap.

November, every course will have started overseeding and the ones that did it early and have reopened will have really slow greens and be cart path only like tuq said.

Phoenix area - WeKoPa, either course. Both routinely are chosen top three or four among public courses state-wide. I have a slight preference for the original (Cholla) but the other one seems to get ranked higher. Can't go wrong, it's like having to choose between two hot chicks, something with which I'm sure we're all very familiar. 25-30 minutes from Tempe.
Thanks. We will probably try the WeKoPa courses.

another option would be to maybe try to play in some of the higher elevation courses that are in sedona like Tuq mentioned. Seven Canyons would be a blast if you are from canada. It's about 1.5 hours from phoenix and the views are amazing....google seven canyons sedona and check it out for yourself

Well, weather-wise September can really suck but it's tolerable by the end of the month for the most part. It's not uncommon for 100+ degree temps well into October but I think low/mid-90s are more the norm. Which after suffering all summer is quite tolerable.

As has been said, if you're gonna come down primarily for golf, early October >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> late October, even if it's 10+ degrees warmer. The mornings will be nice and the afternoons will be at worst tolerable (imo). I basically don't golf from mid-October to around Thanksgiving because of new grass, higher course fees, and cart path only policies, which lead to slower rounds. I have a theory that this is also the time when courses schedule the most charity scramble tournaments, because that way they can fill their courses with people who don't know or care about the course's condition and most scramble tournaments are slow as hell anyway.

So deal with the heat and play in or as close to September as you can. There is usually a schedule out by summertime which lists each course's scheduled overseed date. I can tell by looking at the Troon site that their courses are generally shutting down the first or second week of October.

Also, as noted, upstate golf is a great option until late October or so. Courses in Prescott or Sedona should be in top condition and fairly affordable.

yes prescott/sedona/flagstaff will be the best bang for your buck imo

I don't know if anyone here ever played Sanctuary in NScottsd? My mom lives at McDowell Mountain so I played it a bunch.

Mickelson bought it and they are spending a million or two to renovate it. Going to be renamed McDowell Mountain Golf Club.

White Buffalo will be handling the course renovation/management. They currently manage Chaparral Pines and The Rim Club.

Thanks for the heads-up CDS. First I've heard of it. I know that at some point this spring they dumped Troon Golf as it's no longer available on my pass. However, it's not a course I go out of my way to play so it won't be missed. It's a really weird time to sink a lot of money into a golf course when so many are barely scraping by or failing, but if they can turn it into something worthwhile that would be cool (even if it's taken private). It's always been too narrow, too short, too goofy. I have no idea where they'll find the room to make it better, maybe they're primarily going to spend on facilities and conditioning with negligible changes to the course.

Played Talking Stick North twice yesterday. We opted not to play the south course because the greens were really bumpy. However, they said they're punching the greens on the north today, albeit with the small tines, thus they should recover quicker. In short, I'd avoid both courses for at least 2-3 weeks until their greens recover.

I played vista verde on Fourth of July morning at 8:30 AM for 23 dollars and even after the big storm they got sunday night...the course was fantastic imo for 23 bucks. conditions are very solid, lots of good mountain views and greens are very nice. Most greens are turtlebacks so it seems easy and then your shot rolls off the side of the green and down a slope.

they have no clubhouse or ammenities at all, basically was a failed development after they built the course.

highly recommend for 23 dollars.

Maybe we should look at Vista Verde then. It's a haul for most people but I've heard nothing but good things.

But really all I care about is green conditions. I'd much rather play Encanto with good greens than some high end course with bumpy, uneven ones. I have a suspicion that course budgets are at an all time low right now with the economy being what it is so good putting surfaces are increasingly hard to come by. Still, worth the search.

It turns out now I'm playing We-Ko-Pa over the weekend. Not sure which day yet, but two days of golf would be one too many since I always look forward to at least one day of doing absolutely nothing. How about we shoot for next weekend?

I assume it will be pretty juicy

ended up playing pinnacle peak cc instead of paradise valley cc....pinnacle peak has the best greens in the phoenix area basically in the summer.

completely pure.

shot 37-36..played well and had 4 birdies and a few miscues

Interesting...PVCC is more exclusive but Pinnacle Peak is every bit the golf course, and one of the few places that has greens which are consistently as good as PV.

We-Ko-Pa's greens were good, but then I hear they're shutting them down this week and reopening Cholla, which presumably won't be back to 100%. One thing I noticed about the Saguaro course this time - it's not that long. 6900 from the tips, primarily because it has three drivable or near drivable par-4s from the back tees and a lot of middling distance par-4s as well. Good course though that finishes strong.

I have a buddy that works at pinnacle peak every once in a while and then we basically play for free every sunday..just tip the outside guys $10 bucks or whatever and everyone's happy.

but yes, pinnacle peak is a good solid course. Greens are always super nice and fast, nothing real gimmicky.

Love the 18th hole there...if you can bust your driver deep you can get a bunch of roll off that hill and have a 3/4 iron into the green...but you can easily go OB right on the tee or snap it into the trees lol

This is a long shot, but if anyone has any input on Troon Village (Country Club), that would be helpful. I haven't played there in 20+ years but Saturday I have an important match there. I generally score better on courses I play regularly and am comfortable with (who doesn't though, so it was probably pretty dumb to agree to this venue, especially since my opponent plays there a couple of times a year. So I'm going to do some research and looking at Google Maps to hopefully put me at ease a bit with various carry distances and the like. Things like how the grain rolls though are helpful and could be the difference. As it is I consider him basically at my level yet I'm giving him 4.4 shots for the match - will probably just give him a half shot on the 5th handicap hole - so I feel like I'm at a huge disadvantage right off the first tee. Maybe I should read some Penick to work on the mental aspect a bit.

got too drunk to take pics up in sedona but the courses up there were perfect conditions.

they had just played the sedona open at oak creek cc and the course was awesome, best shape I've ever seen it. Seven canyons was awesome as usual..greens just a little bit slower than what is typical there
