We've been out there a couple of times already when it was in pristine condition, so it's not like we'll be missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime deal. Looking like Sand Hollow instead.

Played the wynn course this morning. The most overpriced course I've ever played and I mean stupidly overpriced. Also the best decision I made all trip....
Today was the last day of our 3 day two nights trip to Vegas. I looked out of the window of our hotel and saw no one on the course so me and the wife walked down and figured if no one is ahead of me I'll be able to play in 3 hours and still make our flight. So I went for it got lucky and got a great caddy and played well for not having swung a club since October which made it even more fun. I'm really glad I did it and recommend it if you have the chance although there's definitely better value elsewhere the convenience factor is huge

Wolf Creek closed until March 12 while the greens are re-sodded.

ETA: If you're staying in the Mesquite area, it's worthwhile imo to take a run up to the St. George, UT area and play Sand Hollow. Sunbrook and Coral Canyon are also nice options in that area.

Lots of nice courses in St George. We played one down there I think it was Entrada. The back 9 was carved out of lava fields

Had a great time at Shadowcreek yesterday and hoping to squeeze in LVCC before the rain today.

Ill be heading down to vegas for a bachelor party in a couple weeks. Were going to be about 3 foursomes, with handicaps varying from scratch to 30. any good course recommendations for us. Limitations would be green fees under 100 (bit over is ok) and some of the group might be hackers/drunk that day, so any uptight place probably wouldnt work

Played 5 courses in town recently for the first time, brief summary... all rounds played from the 2nd longest set of tees.

Rhodes Ranch - 39$ on golfnow. Course was in excellent condition, layout was pretty straight forward, probably a good choice for higher handicappers. Not a ton of overly memorable holes, but yet not a bland course either. Score, 75.

Spanish Trail - got 18 holes for 60$ on golf now (snuck onto the other 9 an hour before sunset and flew thru that as well, didn't see another golfer on the 9). Some really beautiful holes on the course. Got there shortly before the tee time and didn't hit any putts before the round and paid the price running my 20 ft birdie putt 15 ft past on the first hole for the first of 6 3-putts that round. Greens were crazy fast and more brown than they were green. Must depend on the time of year because I read other reviews saying they were shaggy. Score 84.

Paiute Wolf course, 75$ on golfnow - Really amazing course. This was the 5th Dye course I've played and was just what I've come to expect from him, some very difficult up and downs if you miss the green on the wrong side. And missing the greens was quite common for me this round as the wind was blowing 30+ mph which from other reviews seems to be the norm with the winds funnel there between 2 mountain ranges. The greenside bunker on the 17th has to be one of the deepest in the world, 30ish ft below the surface of the green, took me 2 attempts to get it out. Score 93.

Angel Park palms, 50$ on golfnow. Nothing especially notable from this course. No complaints about the level of maintenance, the greens rolled well. If you're hitting it fairly straight you should have no problem scoring well here as the tips are only 6500ish yards, I did the 2nd longest set which was a little under 6,000 yds, so very short and not overly demanding. Score 78.

Badlands, Diablo/Desperado 9's 40$ on golfnow. Picked a real bad day to play this course, was my last day in town so I had drank very heavily the night before and in addition the wind was howling, gusting well over 30 mph. There is nowhere to bail out on this narrow course, any moderately mi**** shot is ending up in an unplayable desert lie w/ the wind blowing like it was. The greens were also extremely difficult, probably even faster than at Spanish Trail, had to be running at 13-14 on stimp. A few times as I was walking up to my ball on the green or addressing a putt it was being blown away by the wind, one time a gust blew it 10 ft. Despite the brutal round I'd return to the course again on a calmer day. Score 100+, picked up my ball on 3 holes so don't even have a final tally. In my defense it likely would've been deemed unplayable in that wind if it was a PGA tour event will balls blowing around on the greens.

Just booked Paiute Wolf, Tuscany and Bears Best for my Vegas trip next month (I'm a tax accountant and looking forward to April 15th).

Will try to make it out to angel park for the night time par 3 action - although that may cut down on the pokers

i prefer to walk, so i will plan to tee off early in the morning. i am fine on any terrain, my home course is extremely hilly and i walk it daily. i want to avoid booking courses that are designed for carts, e.g., lots of distance between holes (= me slowing down the group).

by that criteria, which courses are good walking tracks? which courses should i avoid?

I am not sure if they will allow it. Though a good walking player can play quicker than a cart path only player.

Wow. If it's high season in Mesquite in the winter like it is in Vegas/Phoenix then that is an EXPENSIVE closure (post was made on 02/26). Must have been in pretty dire condition.

Our group returns for our annual June outing on 06/21. I should have posted this earlier as the organizer said last week there were still two slots available, PM if there is any interest but would have to be soon (22 have confirmed). The group is a bunch of middle-aged middle handicappers, a lot come up from the Palm Springs area. They definitely like to drink but most don't get after it too hard since the tee times are usually in the morning. It runs from Saturday 06/21 (practice round) thru Tuesday 06/24. The golf + prize money only buy-in is $465, which to be fair there is a ton of money available each day so it's good value. KPs on all par 3s, payouts to low gross, low net, skins, and maybe longest drive, can't remember.

The past two years it seems he must have gotten a deal with Walters because we played Royal Links (twice), Desert Pines, and TPC Las Vegas. Last year was Primm (Palm I think it's called), Royal Links, Desert Pines, Bali Hai. This year it's likely Primm again for the practice round, TPC Las Vegas and then Paiute Wolf and Bear's Best, two courses I've yet to play.

As much heat as Desert Pines and Royal Links get I'm gonna kind of miss playing them. Clearly not the best courses in town but interesting layouts and the greens at DP were ridiculously good for being in the middle of a ghetto.

DP does indeed have great greens.

BB is a really good course. Back 9 is easy other than 18.

I love Paiute Wolf other than the really out of place island green.

Played it like a month ago. Greens were good for there...fairways were standard spotty in some sections...couple tee boxes were shaggy. But good greens and the rest of the course was good enough.

Does anyone know why Arroyo is now cheaper than Siena? Used to be that Arroyo was the pricier of the two. Did Arroyo deteriorate?

just played Stallion Mountain today with my best friend who lives here....was pleased by the good conditions....greens in really good shape and rest of course was pretty good although the sand traps could use a raking by the grounds crew

I shot 3 over on the front and 1 under on the back including birdies on 17 and 18 to finish my round!....friend shot even on the front and 3 over on the back

played the silver tees(6750 yds) which are one up from the back tees

Bringing the sticks and would like to play 2-3 rounds. Probably early morning to still play a poker event that day, or late afternoon if I bust something and don't feel like poker.

I started the year as a scratch and have dipped to 2, playing like a 6.

Having gotten back and seeing this post, it does seem to stand out from the rest of the course. All four of us hit the green (three of us three-putted) and then we watched as all four of the guys in the group behind us hit it into the water. Regardless of whether the hole doesn't fit with the others, one particularly brutal element is that it seems to play directly into the prevailing wind. We apparently got a "light" wind by Paiute standards and it was still two extra clubs on that hole.

(Notably, two of the other par 3s on Wolf also generally play towards the prevailing wind, including the medium length 12th hole over water.)

Anyway, the trip is complete and I want to post this here before I forget. This year's courses were a substantial upgrade over the last two years and I would seek them out again if up there outside of our yearly trip.

Badlands (Outlaw / Diablo): this was a practice round and we only had a threesome. Both of my friends who are good golfers thought this course was goofy - too many blind shots, too many holes with fairways that abruptly end, forcing a layup. I thought it was fine, however I was also playing pretty well...would really hate to play that course if I was hitting it sideways. Windy as usual but nothing too crazy. This was the only course we paid out of pocket for since the other three were rolled into the tournament price. We agreed that $50 + tax on a Saturday afternoon in June was probably a little steep.

TPC Las Vegas: this was the only track we'd played previously. Since this was part of our tournament I don't know what the rack rate is but they probably command more than they should because of the TPC label and Tour event being held there in the past. Enjoy the course but it must be an absolute nightmare for someone fighting a slice given that the worst trouble on most holes is to the right. Also, the 7th through the 14th is an eight hole stretch which plays both uphill and more or less directly into the wind which would presumably be brutal on a particularly gusty day. Wouldn't want to walk this course.

Paiute (Wolf): I'm not sure what it is about Wolf which makes it the signature course of the three. What little we saw of the other two looked very nice as well. While I played absolutely terribly this day, I did find the course to be solid and not as far from town as anticipated. Guessing this is the steepest greens fee of the four in season, but the distance relative to the others may mitigate that somewhat. Kudos to the ranger for staying on us to keep up because our group was quite slow (at least partially due to hunting for my wayward drives).

Bear's Best: enjoyed this course - the whole "recreating of holes from his other designs" is an interesting take. Having played some of the holes in their original form made it that much better as well. It was a bit funny to go from a hole with standard desert design to one with black sand, then to one with tons of pine trees or tons of palm trees. Shot eight strokes better on the back - I don't know if Clar.k's comment about the back being easier is accurate or if finally keeping the ball in play was the reason. For some reason the wind was blowing up the canyon - coming from the SE...not sure if that's common but it was different than the other courses which were more SSW. As a result the holes heading back down - 14, 15, 16, 18 - were all brutal, although 16 was somewhat manageable due to its length. One gripe here is that the group in front of us, which was part of our event, was preposterously slow. They were about two holes behind most of the round and we were waiting on every shot. It was like a funeral procession behind us with the groups stacked up. A ranger prodded them on the front nine and it seemed to work for a bit but he was nowhere to be seen on the back and the slowness resumed. This should have been addressed. Our round was close to five hours which isn't really acceptable on a fairly calm, sunny day.

tl;dr - played good courses, would play again.

Love/hate relationship with Badlands...played there a few times, once having stayed up virtually all night gambling the night before. Played well (for me) for three holes before the wheels fell off. Went out there once with a buddy and just cruised to an 84 without having played for months before. Played last year and was dog**** and started drinking beers, which combined to allow me to put a skyball mark on my 3W I was going to buff it out and repaint it, but I'm leaving it as a reminder not to be a dumbass on the course.

In that second round, my buddy was completely running out of gas on the back nine. He's an infrequent player and it was July during NBA summer league. He was hitting a fairway wood on a par 5 that had a house on the right with a giant bay window. He somehow manages to hit a ball directly right, like 90 degrees away from his target. The ball is screaming right toward this window and miraculously bounces off a wrought iron fence bordering the property. The bars on the fence were no more than a half-inch wide, and a good 6-8 inches apart. He didn't hit another shot the rest of the round.
