Distance of range balls

Do range balls generally not go as far as a regular golf ball? I would think that these balls get hit 100's of times/are of inferior quality that they would not go as far as a regular ball. I would think it would be a 10% ish difference in distance.

Re: Distance of range balls

It's generally 85% on range balls. New? Right around 90%. Range balls however are very durable which is why you don't see Pro V1X's on the range.

The spin rate off of those balls aren't the same. Trajectory isn't the same. Average player isn't going to tell that much though. A good player will in a second.

The ones with barely any dimples, those probably lose about 30% distance as well but no one should hit them anyway unless you want to see a ball go 4 different directions in one flight.

This is pretty accurate w/ my observations.

Re: Distance of range balls

Depends on the range ball. There are 3 types that I have encountered:

1. Normal Brand - Red Stripe. These balls are all balls that were dug from ponds/found in woods etc. They generally fly shorter distance due to them being water-logged. I forget the exact formula but it's something like every 24 hrs a ball is submerged in water it loses 3% of distance. . .

2. Restricted Flight - These balls look normal, usually with stripes that say RANGE on them, but they are designed for ranges that aren't 350 yds deep. They fly about 2/3 of the normal distance, if not less.

3. Plain Balls - I've seen this only once. Ball didn't have any markings on them. The reason that these balls don't fly as far is the material that they are constructed of. Dimple Patterns aren't as conducive to hang-time and spin rates are all different too, resulting in shorter carrying distances.

Hope this helps.

Isn't it amazing how they do that. One of the ranges around here had old balls that would constantly move in multiple directions.

wow, is it that bad? so my 210 yard drives are 240+ with real balls (that's consistent with my evidence... on a good hit).

some of these range balls fall from the sky like a bird that's been shot. it's pretty amazing.

lol... I have hit a few of those

It fades, then draws, then balloon-fades, and falls out of the sky like a duck. Those onces usually have lump on the side.

Re: Distance of range balls

What about on Tour ? I heard that the players have the option of what type of ball to warm up with. Is this accurate ? Must be nice to warm up hitting brand new pro Vs.

I beleive your average wilson range or top flite super range are right around 65 compression balls hence the shorter distance.

Re: Distance of range balls

what do nationwide/mini tour players warm up with/practice with? Jtrout? Bo?

how do you accurately estimate your distances for each club if you hit at different ranges all the time?

Re: Distance of range balls

well, the other day I was playing a pare three course.

85 yard hole, I hit a range balll 85% w/ my PW and blast it onto the street.
i take out a new pinnacle platinum, hit it like 75% and blast it onto the street even further!

[x] wish i had a wedge between my PW and LW

I know you asked for their opinion and mine not mean much since I'm new but the Nationwide Tour gets the same if they have a ball contract and very few have them. They might get balls for free but only maybe Sims and a few others get their desired ball at will.

In all my times at the events, I only saw a select few with a bag of balls that were their ball they play with. It's usually an old tour guy or a guy that will make tour.

None are "range balls" I forget what company has the right to Nationwide but it's a top company that supplies all their balls.
