Can i beat two 12 hcp if they are playing better ball?
I am a 5 and they are two " fake twelves" ( gimmees, play everything as laterals) can i beat them if we play real rules and they play best ball ( not scramble ). And how good would i have to be to play them if they were playing scramble?
I am guessing yes to the first one and I think scramble they would barely win
Re: Can i beat two 12 hcp if they are playing better ball?
I'll play two guys about 8 shots better than me in best ball and feel I have a very small advantage. Therefore I'd be at a decent disadvantage playing them in a scramble. I'd say things would be similar in your instance.
Note, the handicaps of your example are quite different than the handicaps of my example. I have no idea if that makes any difference.

no way. i dont have much experience with scramble golf. but i remember playing in a tournament with my family a long time ago, but were were all 20+ handicaps and my mom whos like a 40 handicap. we shot at worst 76 that day. i dont see you winning under any of those 2 conditions
Re: Can i beat two 12 hcp if they are playing better ball?
This is a pure guess but I think you are a pretty big underdog.
I'd say it's closer to even if you had them play separately where they can't see each other and adjust their strategy based off their partners.
As a 5, you'll prolly shoot somewhere around 78-80 on average whereas these guys are probably going to be in the high 80s. It's quite easy to shave off some shots, especially if these guys are prone to making a few huge numbers per round.
Re: Can i beat two 12 hcp if they are playing better ball?
I'm assuming match play. You'll crush them at best-ball and be about even at scamble if they can't putt. If you're good at keeping the ball in play you're edge at best-ball should be bigger on tougher courses. If you have to give them strokes too, there's no way you can win.
Re: Can i beat two 12 hcp if they are playing better ball?
Against best ball I think you have a decent shot assuming you're making them play everything by the book. You need to actually shoot around your potential though I don't think you win if you shoot 80. But knowing nothing else, if I had to pick a side I would pick the 5 over the team.
As a scramble you'd need to be really good, not BO good but better than DanPlan

If they are the type of golfers who play the ball up and use a foot wedge here and there and you play by the rules, you might want to add 6 strokes to their round maybe more trust me.
You will win money, they will realize they are not that good and just break down in the middle of the round.

Agree with this (kinda).
The gross best ball for two 12's would be right around 80 I think as well. As a 5, your average score is probably right around 80. So it's pretty close.
Re: Can i beat two 12 hcp if they are playing better ball?
Tough part about this bet is that we don't know what types of 12's these guys are.
There are some 12's who just make 3 triples a round, which is fueled by compounding mistakes on holes and trying to hit the miracle shot. They make 9 pars, a birdie or two, some bogeys, and a few huge numbers.
There are other 12s that just make 12-14 bogeys around and who usually reach the green in GIR+1 and then two putt for their bogey.
In scenario 1, OP is f*cked. In scenario two, he's a lock.
