Ask me anything about being a college golfer

As some of you may or may not know, I play college golf at Cal. College golf doesn't get a lot of coverage on this forum and thought some might be curious. Not sure if there will be a lot of interest but thought I'd throw it out there. Ask me anything and I will do my best to answer as long as it is something not sensitive to the team.

How much have you played against Nick Delio? While I've not met him, his uncle is a good friend of mine, a teaching pro whom I've worked with some. Heard the stories about how far he can launch it. Saw he made it through stage 1 on the number.

20 years ago when I was playing college golf, working out was nearly unheard of. We chuckled when we found out Oklahoma St. did aerobics at 6am thrice weekly. But there was zero mandatory fitness program for any of us. What type of fitness program is required for your team?

Not too many people follow us. I'll occasionally have people ask if I am on the team of I have some sort of team shirt/jacket on or they see I have a ping backpack and they will ask questions or tell you how they played in HS. Usually guys though, girls aren't too interested lol.

As far as scholarships, NCAA limits men to only give out 4.5 scholarships to the team while girls get limited at 6. The difference is related to title 9. We have 12 on our team which is large so those scholarships get spread out typically.

Everything you have heard about him is true most likely. My teammate is good friends with him and the stories about him make him seem like a legend. I played with him when he was 17 I was about 15 in US Junior qualifying and he drove a 335 par 4 and flew it onto the front edge. I played behind him at NCAA regionals my freshmen year and some of the places I saw him were ridiculous. One hole was 500yd par 4 that was into the wind that he reached with driver 5iron. For reference, I hit it carry driver about 285 for total of about 290-300 in normal conditions and I couldnt reach the hole with 3 wood for my second cause their was so much wind.

My team works out 3 days a week either at 6 or 630 depending on your class schedule. These workouts will be fairly golf specific where we work on core strength and mobility in the key areas for the swing. Now every team works out that I'm aware of.

How much access to psychologist do you have? Is there any sort of in depth strategy and shot selection instruction that is math and statistics based on ShotLink stats?

Does the above guy hit it farther that John Hurley from A&M if you know?

Thanks and good luck!

What's in the bag?
Are you responsible for purchasing clubs, balls, shoes etc as a collegiate golfer?
Do you have aspirations of playing professionally?

We don't have a sports psychologist on site that the team uses. A few guys last year had their own mental coaches from back home though that they would talk to regularly. This is the case for me as well since my swing coach has a masters in psychology so I have access whenever I need it.

As far as shot selection, my coach is big on course management. We don't specifically use shot link stats to make decisions, but as a general rule of thumb our coaches are always saying work from the center of the green out to the sides especially the further away you are. I think this is what you are asking?

And Hurley might hit it farther. I have only seen him play a couple times though.

I play all titleist (910 D3 driver and Fd wood and a 910HB, 712CBs, vokey wedges, and a prototype Cameron I got fit for at the Cameron studio). I'm under what's called product support with titleist where amateurs can get free shoes, balls, gloves, hats, and clubs when needed within reason. This was something I had set up before college and have been with them awhile.

Thru my team you can get anything ping that you want for free regardless of whether you play in the lineup or not. When you travel with the team you get balls and gloves for the trip. Occasionally the coaches will give out balls to everyone if my coach has extra that the travelling 5 haven't used. Everyone on the team gets shoes. We have gotten two pairs of fj icons this year and will probably get one more pair in the spring.

I do have aspirations of playing professionally after I finish school.

Have you had any direct contact with the UCLA coach? He is a friend of the family. He is from Oklahoma originally and a great guy.

What kind of scores are the 10th-12th men shooting at Cal and at the other Pac-10 schools? I imagine these are just walk-ons and/or maybe like freshmen?

You typically don't have a full scholarship since the maximum that can be given out by a team is 4.5 and we have 12 guys so its split up so the amount that you get would be deducted from the total cost. Receiving a full scholarship would cover everything though...tuition, room and board, books and maybe a stipend. This is only common in football or basketball where most guys receive a full scholarship.

Yes I have known him for awhile, probably since I started getting recruited back in like maybe 2007 or so. He seems like a pretty good guy to me and the guys I know on the team like him.

I am not sure what the process would be for pros because you might be getting paid a small amount if you are a shop pro (just assuming here). For me and other amateurs/college players you either get setup thru your coach who has a relationship with the manufacturer or you send them a playing resume inquiring about the program or the representatives watch you play at events and pick you up if you are interested. For me, I sent them a resume once I started to have good results and they started off giving me free shoes, balls, gloves, and hats and clubs were basically at cost so still a pretty good deal. Irons were like $400 ish for AP2s. Eventually they became free after I had some good results in college.

It would probably be best to speak to a club pro that is affiliated with them or any other manufacturer.

on our team the 10-12th are averaging around 74-75.5. We play pretty tough courses with ratings typically 73-76 probably just for reference. one is a walk-on and two are freshmen

Re: Ask me anything about being a college golfer

What is the most surprising thing about being a college golfer? Like something you were not expecting that you found out once you started playing?

Are you guys allowed to gamble it up while playing each other in practice? Are side bets allowed durring matches (like between teammates)? If so does it ever happen?

edit: Almost forgot the standard question.
How many 5 year olds?
