Phil will be kicking himself over that triple for weeks, because it looks like -9 or -10 will be playing off here, if not win outright.

also won the individual championship 2 weeks ago at the NCAAs. YT his swing/action. quirky. and when he putts he literally puts the club behind the ball and then pulls the trigger in 0.1 seconds.

I played Erin Hills two years ago, and remember the fescue being quite lush back then. I could get a wedge through it most of the time, but it looks a fair bit thicker now (though Na cherry picked a ridiculously lush looking patch).

That being said, the fairways are quite wide in general, just a big price to pay for a relatively errant ball. Will be a tough course I'm sure... lots of tricky green complexes. Really depends how long/tough they want to set it up.

So they're pros. Hit it straight and you won't have that problem. It's a US Open. It supposed to drastically penalize you for missing the fairway.

Not at all! You put it there; you play it out.

they built this course (Erin Hills) with the usual strong winds in mind. but no strong winds this tournament:

I think its far more entertaining than watching driver 9i/wedge into every hole. This course reminds me of TPC San Antonio in a way. At least the bunkering and green complexes and no rough but ****ed if you spray it. Probably why Na is complaining already, preparing for the 16 he will make this week.

I read the greens are pretty true and not tricky at all.

Let's not forget Na making a 16 on a par-4 trying to hack it out of the woods on a regular course.

Scott Gregory (England)
Martin Laird (Scotland)

Supposedly they don't do the themed pairings anymore. It was hilarious when they used to do the "prick" pairings.

So Phil is skipping the Open to go to his daughters graduation. After reading the reports on this course I'm starting to see the real reason why.

i'm a kevin na supporter but that seems like excessing whining...

i played a course today. hit the ball reasonably straight for a mid-high handicapper and lost a bunch of balls.... where he was showing us the fescue i'm guessing is 30-40 yards off intended line if not much more. my lost ball examples are much tighter than his example and i have no complaints about it.

That's pretty much my home course. Wide fairways. About 5 yards of rough if you miss them, then waist high grass that doesn't get cut all year. If you go in you can hit a provisional or hopefully have an unplayable option back to the regular rough, without a lot of water in play it's completely fair.

I have the same thing at mine. There are native areas on every hole, the grass isn't waist high except in a couple places but if you hit in there this time of year you better hit a provisional.

I played Erin Hills last year during the USGA "prep" week and have been on site a few times. The fairways will be the widest in US Open History. The penalty for hitting it into the fescue will be severe but it will take a seriously wayward drive (for a major) to find it.

There will likely be a few lost balls/unplayable lies as that stuff is really thick in some spots.
