It's part of the genius of the course.

For example Jack and Arnie didn't finesse their way to 10 victories at Augusta. They were the dominant drivers of their time.
With the exception of Sandy Lyle, all of the long hitters who won at the old setup had top notch short games or were solid putters. Palmer was probably the best chipper/putter of his era, and Nicklaus putted fast greens extremely well.

You forgot "Augusta challenges the short game". No way...

today vs. 1996 TW vs. arnie/jack is 3 eras. in fact many more eras so we can both be right.....

i think modern technology had overwhelmed augusta prior to them lengthening it. obviously they lengthened it for a specific reason - probably that reason but certainly could have had other motivations

Direct quote from Curtis Strange today: "It's such a big hitters course now and always has been". To give you the context they were talking about how difficult it is to play for someone like Zach Johnson who is 30-40 yds behind the Bubba's and DJ's of the world. He can win but its extra tough to do so.

Zach johnson = GOAT

i guess this forum is not the only one who hates bubba
I would think Dustin Johnson got at least two votes in that poll.

Johnny Miller deserves to be on any most hated list. The guy is a true dickhead. I've seen it firsthand.

Anyone else think Oosthiuzen has an amazing swing? Dude doesn't seem that big, or take much of a rip at it, but has pretty sick distance.

based on post-Masters rankings ... U.S. occupies 19 of the top 30 spots

We have discussed how much the quality of play has improved on the PGA tour over the years. One way to look at the issue is to inspect the spread in tournament outcomes, the idea being that higher quality would translate into smaller spreads.

Here are the average yearly standard deviations of final four-round scores at the Masters tournament throughout its history (to make it apples to apples, I have restricted it to the top 40 players):

1934-1942 6.86
1946-1955 5.59
1956-1965 4.73
1966-1975 4.36
1976-1985 4.21
1986-1995 3.99
1996-2005 4.54
2006-2015 3.98

While this is far from a perfect measure, I think it gives a fair reflection of the quality of play on the PGA tour over time.

I would have expected the trend to slope more negative. I did not run a linear regression but I am guessing it would be pretty flat from 1966-on, probably because of that 4.54 data point for 1996-2005.

Do Masters champs usually play the week after shipping? Spieth giving no time to soak it in, back to work like a true GOAT.
04-16-2015 , 08:12 PM
I think most make commitments weeks in advance for the sake of sponsors.
04-16-2015 , 08:44 PM
Spieth loyal to RBC for letting him play in 2013.

GOAT Spieth with a bogey free 62 today to jump up the leaderboard

Tom Watson made the cut this week.. What a stud.
04-18-2015 , 09:53 AM
They should have had him play in the Ryder Cup instead of captain it.
