Re: 2012 Amateur Golf Tournaments Thread

Will depend how I am playing...not hitting it as well as I'd like right now...so unless I improve my ball striking a lot by registration deadlines I won't be playing in anything as it would not be worth it.

If I do end up hitting it better and playing anything, it would probably be either a Met Open or NY State Open qualifier, and obviously the actual event if I were to qualify.

Michael Weaver. In good shape now. ****ed up the finish. Gotta sit and wait now. Will write a TR later to see how it goes. Should have been -6 at worst I really blew it and the end. I'll take some run good this afternoon along with lots of wind

One round. I need no more than two guys to shot -4 or better to be in safely otherwise I'm in a playoff. A playoff seems likely IMO. Probably another 3 hrs or so. Stay tuned

random question: if you play a professional tournament as an amateur and you end up winning the thing, are you allowed to ninja turn professional and keep the prize money?

Yes. 99% sure Fred Couples did this and dropped out of college after winning a tourny.

Not sure if he did or not, but pretty sure you can't do it now anyway

That 1% just jumped up and bit you.

Just going from memory here on the tournament, but Couples was out in California before his senior year at Houston, and was asked if he wanted to play in the Long Beach Open. He decided to and then on the entry form he had to check a box for either amateur or professional. He basically said what the hell and turned pro right then and there. He did well but his Dad read him the riot act when he found out.

You have to declare your status before the tournament begins.

Re: 2012 Amateur Golf Tournaments Thread

SHIP IT!!! SO STOKED!

BTW, the first round (thursday) will be my 21st birthday.

Basically in the playoff there were 5 for 2 spots, all drives in play off the tee and i hit second. 115 to the pin flew it 6 inches from the pin but off a tight lie so it was low and spinning but took a firm bounce and checked about 18-20. lefty (other qualifier) hits it to 5-6 feet. two of the others leave it short of a huge ridge in the green and have like 50+ feet and 5th guy hits it in bunker. two guys on the green are away, one putts to 5 feet the other to 12. bunker guy hits out to 12 feet. then im up and have a 18-20 feet for biride and just burn the low edge and tap in for par. then both guys from 12 feet miss (bogey) and the kid who hit it close for birdie misses and makes par. then the guy who lagged it to 5 feet slams his putt thru the break and miss so par does it and me and the lefty advance.

in regulation i got to -6 thru 13. hit my 15th hole (number 6) in two but had like 55 feet. misread the put and had like 6 feet down hill pulled that and it barely caught the edge and went 3.5-4 feet past then missed that and made 6 but kept my composure and made a good short sided up and down on the next par 3 then birdied 8. on 9 i made a mess. hit the fairway off the tee and had 127, right in between a PW and 52 degree. tried to hit the easy PW, in hindsight i think making a full swing when I was nervous was the better play. anyway, miss the green left but not a hard up and down by any means and run the chip 5 feet past. then i got really nervous and missed the 5 footer and it rolled 5 feet by. I honestly didnt even think i hit it hard i was in a fog it seemed like then missed the comebacker. I went thru my routines on all the putts i was just really nervous, having never been in a situation like this before.

So overall I played really well, had some blunders but fortunately i got away with them. thats what it takes some times and ill take any good breaks that come my way.

We play TPC Stonebrae often for school so I know the course well enough. IDK how many practice rounds ill get in cause the weather looks kinda rough this week. Obviously it will be a great experience for me and is my first professional event. I just want to go out and have fun and enjoy it all cause not many guys my age get to do this. Thanks for the support, ill be sure to keep you guys posted. I'll be sure to write up a TR after the event rather than how im whipping this one out really quick but unfortunately i have to do some homework now so that i can get it out of the way before the tournament starts.

Congrats on qualifying. If I were you, I would go in with the mindset that "you have nothing to lose" and play fairly aggressive. I'm not saying firing at every pin, but take your shots at some and see how it goes. Have fun, should be a great experience.

Disagree.

While it's easier said than done, it's simply a few rounds of golf at a course you're familiar with. You don't be more or less aggressive than normal, you just go out and play YOUR brand of golf.

Besides, there's over a billion people in China that don't give a flying **** what you shoot. Just play golf.
