I've heard great things about Brazil (specifically Florianópolis and Rio) and now planning on taking a work-vacation trip to Florianópolis at the end of this year for up to 6 months. Will be grinding poker full time still. I'm budgeting for up to 1.3k EUR each month for just rent (1-2 bedroom apartment in a nice area) and about 600EUR on top of that for living expenses. I'll aim to get an apartment in a somewhat nicer part of the city.

Thought I'd get this thread up to hear other people's experiences with Florianópolis?

What can I expect in terms of money (spending), the people, culture and language? I don't speak any Portuguese so will be learning a new language too!

I'm mainly just looking for nice weather, amazing looking girls and cheap living expenses. I don't ask for much else . So I welcome any suggestions on other places I should visit whilst in Brazil!

I've spent 6 months in Floripa over the last year or so. I've payed between 900-1000r(500-600 U.S. dollars) per month. If you're willing to gamble I'd come here and stay in a hostile and ask around about places to rent. You'll get a better deal than booking before.

English isn't spoken much here so I'd recommend learning some Portuguese before you come. The women are stunning, the beaches are beautiful, and it's relatively safe. You'll love it.

do locals speak any english at all? my portuguese is non-existent but i would go to language school daily if i was to move over. ive been to other parts of brasil and speaking just english seemed to work ok.

from what ive researched, life is good with high living standards and very good beaches and surf.

i would worry maybe its not as exciting as rio though perhaps?

florianopolis is worse than rio with regards to english, but some people will still speak it.

lol, cool 3 year bump...I'll bite. I'll be moving to Brazil end of september and was planning on checking out floripa first. Same deal no portuguese, but I speak spanish.

Tough to find furnished 1 bedroom apartments for monthly rentals there? Not sure yet if I'll be there a month or a year, but looking forward to giving it a shot

you can speak to brazilians in spanish and they'll know exactly what you're saying. one girl i met from porto alegre had really bad english so im a bit worried communication will be hard.

If you speak Spanish you'll learn Portuguese very quickly, no problems. South of Brazil is very nice in all aspects, enjoy it.

boliver, with your Spanish skills you should be fine in Floripa. Much easier to pick up Portuguese for you since you already speak Spanish and people here would mostly have no problem understanding Spanish anyways, especially since the area gets its fair share of tourists from Argentina or Uruguay every summer.
English only would be much tougher, there certainly are many people who have decent English skills, but you'll also come across many Portuguese only speaking people( or others who will speak little or poor) English, even though a fair share of them know some English and are just afraid to speak it.

So I should be in floripa in the next month - suggestions on what part of the city/island to stay? Was originally thinking of staying in the city part right across the main bridge - or maybe around campeche, but then I heard about Jurere and some of the northern beaches being a hotspot as well. I'll prob be living with another grinder friend, but would like to be accessible to food/delivery/nightlife stuff and ideally also close to some decent waves

I'll be in Floripa in just two days, staying for 6 weeks. I'll second Bolivers request for info about food delivery type stuff

Also I'll be wanting an internet 3g backup asap so if anyone can recommend a company that'd be great.

It's going great. I found a apartment on airbnb with an ocean view on the north side of the island. It's like 600$ per month and the Internet works great, no hiccups so far.

Really loving florianopolis, already thinking of coming back to stay longer someday.

So should be arriving to floripa in the next few days, and was looking for advice on both how and where to find a furnished rental for 1-2 months. It seems like the northern part of the island could be cool, with juere intl more of a party spot and canasvieras being laid back but still accessible to whatever daily things you need. Barra de lagoa/retiro area also, ingleses - all seem to have concentrations of rental apts.

Seems a bit overwhelming atm as far as where to start off in floripa as everything seems to be like 30+ minutes away from each other. Looking only on airbnb and prices/availability seems reasonable, but open to other options as well

not a huge fan of the place when i was there around new years time, much prefer rio. everyone i meet had that rich daddy too cool for you kinda vibe. whole place seemed really status/wealth orientated with a lot of dick swinging.

alltho I went to visit my girlfriend who lives there and shes 18 so naturally i was introduced to a lot of preppy lads of that age group which i think caused some bias. also my sample size was only 3 weeks, And to be fair to the place i did go and visit the beach/hippie(?) area around those big sand dunes and loved it.. found it very polarizing to where i was staying in jurere

Anyway shes moved city now to Balneario Camboriu which is like an hour drive from floripa iirc, ill be going there start of april to grind online for a month while shes at uni hopefully ill have a better experience there. if any poker players/2+2ers are in that area around that time and want to meet up for a beer or something pm me

Coming back to Floripa pretty soon and figured I'd check in and see if any other players are around.

Also I'll be looking to check out some new neighborhoods so if anyone has a favorite area I'd love to hear about it.
