Any US or Canadian citizens have experience going through the UK visa application process?

The maximum stay for the standard visa appears to be 6 months per year, but subject to the discretion of border agents or embassy. If I can't get the full length-of-stay, then I would prefer not wasting money on the flight etc.

This happened to me when I moved to Canada. I thought I would get 6 months, but the agent at the airport stamped me for 3.

For non-EU citizens who traveled to the UK, what was your experience with border/immigration, what was your stated purpose of travel and how long were you granted stay?

Dunno specifically about the UK but in many countries you can stay up to 6 months a year but only up to 3 months per entry with the standard visa, so what happened to you in CA is quite standard. If you want to stay longer you typically have to get a different visa for which you may need to fulfill additional requirements (work, student, money etc.)

I got hassled a lot when entering the UK. The guy didn't like that I had no job or ties anywhere and it seemed like he thought I might be planning to stay (even though I only had one suitcase). Questioned me for an hour and took notes on all of my answers and kept disappearing to supposedly confer with his boss. Eventually I showed him the email confirmation of my return flight which was a week later, and then he gave me a visa for six months. This was in 2014.

I may have brought some of the problems on myself by listing my occupation as student while not actually being enrolled anywhere.

Prolly would have gone better if you had just listed your occupation as "pro ww-player"

Fwiw I ended up just telling uk that I'm there for poker and got 6 months. Same wirh canada (3 months. but you can file extensions while you're there). Flew in both countries. Might be good to have a contact in the country to vouch for you in case they ask. Can also bring your tax returns assuming it says pro gambler on it as your profession. What will they say, we don't allow gamblers to vacation in our country?
