On NYE last year I got in a bar fight with some guy that used to go to my high school. He wanted to fight me for years and we finally ran into each other on NYE. I pummeled his face, threw him to the ground, and for some really retarded reason (very drunk) decided to throw a pint glass in his face. it was then broken up. He only got 4 stitches and is fine.
Because of that I proceeded to get charged with assault with a weapon.
I'm 21 years old and from Canada.
This is the only trouble I've ever been in.
I was planning on going to the WSOP this year (and upcoming years) but I am now not sure if I can get across. This really worries me. Is it purely based on the border/customs agent?
Does any body have experience traveling with a criminal record?
Is there countries I can guarantee get into? (Thailand, Cambodia, etc)
I did some research and its somewhat unclear and appears to be case/charge oriented.
Just look at the visa application and see if they ask about criminal record. You most likely won't be able to enter Japan as it's very strict, but most countries are not strict.
Most visa applications I've filled out never asked for this info. Actually, I can't think of even one that asked for this info but maybe I'm just forgetting after quickly checking off 'no'... Anyway, just check the visa application.
well, japan aint gonna check his record, they don't have a joint agreement like the US and Canada has. The only reason why Paris Hilton was denied entry into Japan is because she's famous, and I doubt OP is as famous as Paris Hilton
Thailand is a haven for dodgy criminals so they'll welcome you with open arms (not implying you're dodgy by no means lol)
you will still be able to travel to most countries on a tourist visa with no problem, not sure about the states as i know they are very strict.
take for example australia. on arrival you are required to fill out a form and they will ask you if you have any convictions. you can choose to just tick no and they will never check up on this. if however you tick yes then they will interview you and as your crime was a violent one its likely they would not let you in.
so yeah you can still travel but you will probably have to tell some lies along the way.
many countries wont even ask, thailand has already been mentioned couldnt care less.
FTR i dont have a criminal record so i cant say for 100% certain that you would get into australia. however based on my experiences of talking to people when i was over there it wont be a problem as long as you dont disclose it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I'm most concerned with crossing into the States as I really want to go to the WSOP in a couple weeks and upcoming years. Any help or insight on crossing into the States from Canada would be greatly appreciated
you will not be allowed in im afraid. about a year ago i was crossing the niagara falls rainbow bridge border into new york with 4 buddies, at the border we were asked the standard questions and if we had a criminal record, and one of my friends did have a criminal record from like 5 yrs ago and we all were not allowed in and got questioned for over 2 hours (which is total BS).
Anyways what they told him was since he didnt know he was not allowed in, this one time they would just let him go back to canada and if he tries to get back in the usa he will get arrested/whatever.. unless he gets some kind of waiver you have to apply for which costs like $600 (lol) and takes a few months. I guess it might be worth it if going across is important to you.
Not sure what they would have done if he said he had no criminal record, wouldnt risk it though.
