I used my ARC (Alien Resident Card, obtained through my job), which is proof of both work and residency. I think you can do it with less but not sure.

Also, regarding sending money back to a bank in the states, this is a pretty easy process but will probably cost you another $20 between the small fee charged by the Taiwanese bank and the larger one most likely charged by your American bank.

sensasian and aceuphisleev,
Thanks for the info. I went to my bank last Friday, paid around a $30 fee, and got the money sent to my USA bank account this Monday. You guys were right this was pretty simple.

What is the short-term-stay accommodation like in Taipei.. I'm referring to serviced apartments, hotels that allow stay up to say a month or two, etc etc? Any recommendations or websites I can look at? I don't want to sign a lease so probably not through a leasing/rental agency.

Also any nice areas along the MRT line of Danshui that is between Taipei central and Danshui where there's plenty of food, some nightlife, safe, etc?

How about mobile broadband options in Taiwan, what are the best options for prepaid USB modem or similar... how much, how reliable the connection, etc?

Thank you.

Questions:

1) What are the prices of electronics(digital cameras, laptops, unlocked mobile phones) like in Taipei, compared to say Fry's or Amazon.com in America?

2) Is there free software one can download to allow pinyin input(ie typing in English letters and have chinese words come out) for a western laptop(ie not Chinese-character-based)? This is because it's hard sometimes to get results by googling something in Taipei/Taiwan using english words... would be nice to use the chinese words but I can't input... enlighten me if there is an easier way..

Thank you

What is the best way to get from Taoyuan airport to Taipei downtown, say close to some hotel near Zhongxiao Fuxing? Is there an airport bus and does it just stop at central Taipei MRT or..?

Also if my flight gets in at just past midnight, is it best to catch airport bus into town and try check into hotel or would I be better off just wait at airport till say 5am then go to Taipei... do hotels allow early check-in's at say around 7-8am? This way I get to save a night's hotel...

Thanks

There is a bus that runs from the airport to Taipei Main Station, but it might not run at midnight. The bus I take from Taoyuan to Taipei stops running at 10:00, but maybe it is different for the airport...not sure. If you can catch a bus to the Main Station, you can take the MRT as long as it is before midnight or after 6am, or you can take a pretty cheap taxi ride to Zhongxiao Fuxing any time of day.

Can someone tell me what's up with the nightlife on the weekends? Do the clubs still pop off?

I'm thinking of making a short stop over in taipei and wanted to know if it would be worth mid-week.

If anybody wants to take over my lease for my 1 bed room do let me know via PM. I might be leaving. You won't have to pay agent fees and there's just about 8 months to go then you would be free to leave whenever and get your full deposit back. It's 42k NT a month, centrally located, full furnished with internet.
