With all due respect man, that's part of the reason I'm moving. You're right that I won't speak the language immediately, nor have any contacts. However, I will be trying to start a business as soon as possible (that could take 6 months, it could take 2 years, I really don't know). So I want to take that into account when making my decision. That's not to say that I'll only consider the place that's the easiest to start a business, it's just that I want to go to a place with my eyes open about what my options are in that regard.

I don't know enough about visa regulations in these countries to give you any informed advice. Although, I doubt you would be able to start a business on any type of work visa and ARC that you got through teaching. It's technically illegal to do any type of "work" outside that which is specifically stated in your work visa that you get for your ARC. It obviously depends on what business you intend to start. Is it an online business? If so, then that could be okay as long as you don't let Taiwanese immigration get wind of it.
Do you intend on staying permanently in the country you move to if you start a business there?
Try marrying a local citizen and you might get around all this in any country. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I would consider staying permanently (possibly even if I don't start a business there). Honestly, I don't really want to marry someone for that reason lol. It sounds like Taiwan might be a little tougher in that regard, so maybe I'll plan on going to China and taking vacations in Taiwan, since I know that people definitely do start businesses in China.

Re: Shanghai, Seoul, or Japan: Help A Man Decide...
Might be a bit off topic but does anyone know what the cheapest way is to transfer money from europe to a chinese bank account?
Paypal charges 35$ for the transfer withdrawal to a chinese bank account alone, a bit too much for the amount I want to transfer.

Thanks for you opinion. Would you care to expand on it a bit and explain why you don't like it?

Their society is the strangest in Asia.
You really have to live there for a Few years to fully understand what's going on.
As long as you don't work for a korean it's not that bad. I know some Starcraft players who love Korea, and some expat bar owners seem to be happy as well, but whatever you do, don't take a job teaching English unless you like to be degraded on a daily basis.

Shanghai is a pretty sick spot! Not sure how far your money will go on a teacher's salary though. The cost of living is one of the highest in all of China. Definitely a must visit place though if you have the opportunity.

I'll make a list of my experiences.
-Racism towards all non-Koreans. You will get this weekly.
-Spitting and littering. Koreans spit and throw trash on the ground all the time.
-Blame foreigners for everything. It's always your fault, never a Koreans.
-Wife beating. 42% of women in Korea have been beaten by their husbands. You'll see this or hear it.
-Pushing and shoving. They always push and shove in lines.
-Generally just rude esp towards non-Koreans.
-Yelling and screaming. Doesn't matter what time it is someone is always yelling outside. 3 am sure why not scream at your wife.
Every time I show a picture of a Black person 1 of the kids yells Africa and everyone, including the Teacher, laughs.
I've been called dirty, ugly, stupid and pervert by Korean people all because I'm not Korean.
My Korean teacher and I had to look for a new place to live and she found out how nice Korean people are. 99% of people hung up on her, she is Korean, when she said it was for a foreigner.
Also, don't ever say something bad about Korea. It's prefect and they don't care to hear differently.
How's that?

This is ridiculous. Why would you live in a country that you hate for 5 years? Did it ever occur to you to move to another country after the first year? How about the year after, or the year after that?

The money and its an easy job. I liked it for first and second year but then I started to realize the racism is everywhere. By then I was making too much money to leave. Plus Black friday hit and I wanted to see what would happen with that. Korea is the best for pay and cost of living esp if you have a Tefl. Just isn't very foreigner friendly.
