Hey guys,

After trying to find a room in a poker house in Bangkok that is suitable for me I realized that if you cannot afford at least 1000$ rent a month there is no way of getting into one of these. 1000$ in Bangkok is a ****load of money, for which you can easily rent a 3-bedroom house alone.

Just speaking for me, I do not need all the luxury all these poker houses offer. I need a chip and a chair, so to speak. Well, my bedroom, a bathroom, and a living room that can host all the players with their setups to play. That's all I need. For a cost of 3-400$ a month per person that is easily doable.

This thread is initially a way to find out if there is more people like me out there who are willing to live more basic, thus putting more effort and concentration on their game, and at the same time saving on dough. If there should be interest among you guys I would be scouting for a cheaper place. It might not be as centrally located, but hey travel in Bangkok is cheap.

With this I am awaiting your responses.

Cheers,
Alex

well they like to have baller pads with rooftop gardens, maids, etc., and play MSNL, it's understandable. the money they pay is still easily worth it for the quality of place and location they get, and they can afford it. they kind of are like 4 bedroom houses fwiw, they're huge

there are 3 other poker players in the apartment complex i live in on sukhumvit 62, we pay $150 - $220/month before utilities, about $220 - $310 after

obv we're all in separate rooms, but many ppl prefer that. we're still fairly central, close to skytrain, have a swimming pool, restaurant room service, A/C, balcony, etc.

having your own space can be easier with a thai gf, gives you freedom to move out without needing to find someone to take over your place in a 'poker house', and it's still easy to meet up and hang out in bkk without being all together in a student party style environment. but i can understand the appeal

^ well the room would be huge, with a huge separate living room, kitchen and rooftop garden, maid service, proper security (i don't get any of those for $200 lol) and be excellently located. i've seen one of these baller poker pads, 4 people splitting the $3.8k/month. it's much more baller than something I'd find for the same price in London

a balla poker house is not something i'd want to do long term, but i don't think it's overly crazy

There are a ton! i'd say it's 50/50 between baller houses and as you said low baller. 99% of the USA refugees are at least 200nl winning players and $1000 it's not a big deal.

I am same as you, sure I prefer to live in a ultra mega baller house , but for now i'm living in UK and my rent is like 400 pounds for some pretty standard place.

It's funny how the Thailand threads talk about how super cheap Thailand is, but any time a shared house situation is posted, it's usually quite pricey...

For $1K-$1,200/month you can negotiate with a nice hotel and live there. That's what I did. Suk 15 location is very good (though it's 2nd place to Thong Lo), the room was very well designed, had kitchen (but no stove), hotel had small pool, etc.

My buddy is staying right at this moment (high season) at the popular Dream hotel and he negotiated 39,000 (about $1,300/mo) and that includes the nice breakfast they have there.

On a world map, it's hard to beat Bangkok as a budget location because they have been doing a good job keeping RE/rent prices low. That is a big part of the BKK appeal for me. Someone should set up a real poker house that costs ~$500 and people will come if terms are flexible. But it's not all that easy. Part of the problem is that the cheap places are unfurnished and they end up looking like ghetto dorms when people start stuffing it with random cheap furniture and beanbags.

@jspill Hey mate how have you been. Yeah apartment is a great idea, but how often do you actually meet up to play a session or discuss strategy and hands? I guess in a closed environment you would do that much more often and continuously. Also I understand you are a FL player, are your colleagues too? Would be better to have people around that are regulars at the same type of games.

@bmwteam If you say there is a ton of both high and low stakes houses, please tell me how to find them. Haven't found a single low stakes poker house in Bangkok online.

@dc_publius If you decide to move a little to the outskirts houses are cheaper and I am sure one can find furnished houses for 400$ a bedroom. I have been living here for 13 years so I am not looking to party everyday and having to stay in a central location, I am way beyond that. I would want to concentrate more on my game and to move up in stakes with the help that a poker player environment will provide.

good thx, well we chat on skype about small talk and meet up for dinner, coffee, beers etc. but don't feel the need to discuss strat much. we're all happy with our game, and learn more from thinking through things ourselves, just playing, independent reading and watching vids. I've never been a fan of sweat sessions or group chat face to face, just doesn't do much for me. I'm a a member of every training site on the net, watch vids and pass on recommendations to others etc., use HEM to review sessions. i don't have anyone else that plays FL in the building, but i think it'd be the same even if i did

also even if i did want to regularly meet up for strat talks, they're just down the corridor 10 seconds away, effectively we are under the same roof, there's just no shared lounge and kitchen. you could argue that those things can be a distraction. i don't think if we were in a shared space we'd bounce ideas off each much more than we do now. when you're around a people all the time you could argue that you get tilted by them, have personality clashes etc., and have less skype chats, which are a super fast way to discuss ideas. i'd find myself just partying, drinking, and going out all the time and playing less, i suspect. i remember not getting any work done in a shared dorm at uni

As a fellow cheap bastard I approve of this thread.

Also if you aren't fixated on Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai are both cheaper in terms of rent. Because to be honest if you are planning on staying miles away from the Sukhumvit area, you might as well be in Pattaya.

There are some here. Just look a few pages back. From time to time there is a new ad on this forum, lets say once a week or in two weeks.

I read one thread few days ago, for China, two 50nl dudes looking for roomates.

Post in the "Looking for poker house" or something like that thread, someone will pm you.

Why? Serviced apartments in similar location will cost about the same, require payment in advance and a big deposit, usually overcharge for electricity which is a substantial expense, have fewer servicing (as opposed to daily), not include breakfast which at Dream is actually really good value, etc.

I looked around at serviced apartments on Suk 11 and similar areas and anything similarly nice is at least 30K. Prices have gone up substantially in the last 2 years, and they are really milking the 'high season' surcharges, 'short term stay' surcharges, etc. Have you seen anything comperable to Dream in similar location for that much less?

And no, living at Ekkimai/On Nut/Rama 3 is not comperable. Like Pokerspiv said, if you're gonna be 1 hour away during rush hour, you might as well be in Pattaya.

If someone wants a chill and cheap place to stay that is still near the beach, they should consider Jomtien. It's close to Pattaya if you want hookers and Jomtien itself has tons of foreign restaurants and bars. Really nice beaches are a ferry away. Nice housing can be had at great price, and Jomtien is big enough to explore, but small enough to navigate without getting lost. I think people should put it on their list...

I like this thread - I'm all for value, **** the facade

I could care less if my place had a rooftop jacuzzi, an indoor pool and a mini-golf course with 3 pooltables. As long as there's a solid internet connection and a large bed. Room. For, you know. Sleeping

It just often depends on how you look for condos... you can find nice condos from 6500bhats to 20000bhats a months, and you can definitely find very nice one with everything gym, pool, sauna, for like 12000bhats. The important thing, is that often they are going to give you a farang price, which won't be a market price. You are often able to negotiate the price.
If you look on internet for condos, you will only find farang price if you look in english!
the best is if you have a thai person who can go have a look for you, or you will need to negociate the price if you don't have anyone, or, my best advise is to do a search in thai language, using google translate, you will see it's easy, then you will have tons of adds for cheap and nice condos.

here are the great website to find good things.

Hey guys,

Why does a thread about Thailand always has to include hookers and Pattaya? If I wanted to stay in hell on earth I would have moved to Pattaya a long time ago. I live in Thailand because I love the people, culture, food, weather, and lots more. Hookers are not what I am here for, so please leave these topics to other threads. No offense to all that are here for cheap sex, but this thread is about low cost living and playing poker .

My friend lives in Sapaan Soong which is on the way to the airport with a good connection to BTS skytrain. He pays for his house with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, big living room and even a garden, 16.000 Baht, which is about 530$. He pays 1500 Baht for electricity and water, thats about 50$. So all in all it would come out to 200-250$ a month per person. He told me there are bigger houses with 6-7 bedrooms for around 30-40.000 Baht, so it wouldn't be more than 300$ per person. I will wait 2 more weeks to see how many people are interested before I will scout out an area and place.

@sk345di PM sent.

There's more than just hookers in Pattaya. More specifically it has some really good value condos, excellent transportation, internet infrastructure as good as or better than Bangkok, and a beach.

If your primary purpose is to live cheaply and play poker there are a lot worse places you can be. Unless you really must live in Bangkok it's worth considering.
