I'm leaving Lima soon because 1. the winter kinda blows and 2. it's just time to move on. I've been in Peru two years though and have really grown to love the country and would like to share some tips. In general I think this country is highly underrated.

1. Travel. Peru is incredibly diverse. Iquitos, the Amazon jungle city, has become one of my favorite places on earth. Do drink ayahuasca there. See if you can book at Dreamglade if possible. Smoke DMT with Ian. Life changing epic experiences are to be had. While there don't forget to go play with all the amazing wildlife.

The city of Cuzco and Macchu Pichu also waits for exploration. Drink San Pedro with mountain shamans. Check out the amazing historic ruins. It's simply great.

I haven't made it to the Northern Beaches unfortunately but I am sure they are worth the trip.

Arequipa is it's own unique place I spent a lot of time in. Over all though I wouldn't really recommend it considering how great the other areas of Peru are.

2. The internet is quite good, especially if your building is in proximity of an Olo connection. Other than that Movistar 3g has been quite stable and has worked for me all over.

3. The food is great. Ceviche quickly became one of my favorite foods. Do try Conchas Negras. The standard dishes can be great as well, tacu tacu with seafood, grilled prawns and quinoa in succulent sauces, etc etc.

For a good cook, the quality of ingredients here is unparalleled. In Lima definitely discover Mercado Surquillo #1 where you will find the greatest assortment of vegetables, herbs, and fresh seafood on the planet. For veggies and fruits, the variety here simply can't be beat.

Other treats include:

The best dark chocolate. Check out the brand Amazona. At the sunday market I buy huge bricks for about ten bucks a pop and it is incredible. Paired with cherimoya fruit, or sun dried aguaymanto berries, is awesome.

Wonderful coffees are grown here. If you are a fan of bullet proof coffee you will be in heaven. Amazing butter from the happy cow dairy can be bought at the weekend organic markets. Coconut oil is cheap. And fresh vanilla can be bought for a couple bucks a pod. Best. coffee. ever.

Fresh Maca is pretty cool. If you aren't familiar with it, maca is the aphrodisiac ginseng. Maca powder is available all over the world of course, but we like to slice the fresh root up and saute it with veggies.

The organic markets also have great local goat and cow cheeses, fresh quinoa and any other grain one could possibly imagine, any herb you could ever want (and more), and all sorts of other great stuff. There's a company called Olivo with some of the best olives ever. I go twice a week and I always genuinely look forward to it.

3. Peruvian people are mostly really nice . Do your best to learn some Spanish though as that will certainly help A TON. You don't need to know a lot to get along, but definitely know your niceties, numbers, stuff like that.

4. The visa situation is probably the best anywhere. While it's a bit of a pain to travel to other countries in order to renew it, the fine for overstaying is only 1$ per day. Americans can ask for 183 days when entering Peru too, so if you decided to just stay and pay the fine one could stay a whole year without leaving for 180$. If you are playing LAPT events around South America you'd never have to worry about visa at all, as you'd simply get another 183 days every time you came back into the country.

That's all I got for now but if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to try and answer if I can.

Anyone in Lima or anywhere else in Peru at the moment?

Considering going for 1-2 months, starting in Jan or February, for online grind (perhaps live too) and to visit healing center for some plant medicine retreats, as mentioned in the above post (very helpful indeed thanks). If I'd stay 2 months and grind then definitely would be nice with some fellow poker friends. Especially considering I don't speak any Spanish, yet.

FWIW I'm from Sweden. Have traveled in south east asia quite a bit, but this would be my first time in South America. Use to play midstakes cash but playing lowstakes nowadays. 420 friendly but don't really partake anymore. More into yoga, meditation, dance and entheogens these days. Usually get a long really well with other poker players, regardless of interests. We seem to be quite like-minded overall and just about everyone I've met seem to be nice guys in this community.

Hello, I'm traveling through Peru and will be in Lima on Monday for a couple weeks. Are there any poker players that'd like to meet up for a drink or some food? I'll be staying in the Miraflores or Barranco area. Feel free to pm me. Cheers

Seriously thinking of moving to Lima around October. Need a flat with the best possible internet, ESPN sports to watch all the live NFL games (very important as I bet live) and near to the beach for surf (Miraflores seems best). Also want to do Spanish school on week days.

Any help/info out there? Thanks

yeah. haha my local friend everytime we're going into some VIP club 'dude dude speak english really loud and we'll get in!!'

more bricheras in peru than any other country I've seen. They all want a green card

meh. Overall I'd have to say no unless you stay in a couple specific places. Taxis are pretty sketchy, many many stories of them robbing people or express kidnappings to local friends.

I mean, idk. it's not tough to get laid it seems. I have a couple lima girls I like a lot and normally stick with them everytime I go back. Fairly great nightlife I'd say

nah, not really. kinda far away and in very bad parts of the city the cheap spots. expensive places are fine and closer but catered to gringos $$$$ Seems to be a lot of trannies as well, and really annoying hookers who grab you
Lima is amazing, I love it a lot for like 3-4 months out of the year, problem is during that time everywhere is amazing (December - March)

Great thread guys!

I am a professional online-grinder while living in the Phils.
I love it in the Phils and hope I never will have to move, but it seems that a move might be in the worst case necessary because some jurisdication-stuiff might change to the bad and hence it might happen that there will come a day that onlinepoker is not possible anymore as a resident in the Philippines (do not want to bother you with the details).

So in fact I am considering alternative solid places to live in such a worst case scenario and central-/southamerica would be on my fav-list.

From this thread it seems that there are some people who have traveled already a bit within SA - so i wonder, what is in your view the best location to live as an Onlinegrinder in SA or latin america (mexico maybe)?

Regards to the language:
In the Phils everyone can speak very well English, but I always make the effort to learn the local language, like I do in the Phils as well.
But that is more to show locals respect and cause it makes fun to learn new languages.
Because lets be honest, mostly you can learn for instance Spanish well (I would guess) to inform yourself a bit, but not so quick to have really deep convos...

So do also educated (below 40yo) people speak in Lima English, or only tourist-catered people and green card-chasers? xD
Visa seems all right in Peru from what I have read here.

So no more questions so far.

thanks a lot^^

Most educated people speak English at a conversational level, but not all of them do, and most people you encounter in your daily life (cashiers, etc) may not speak any at all. And if you're with a group of people, few of them will want to talk among themselves in English just so that the one foreigner in the group can follow along.

Hi,

I arrived in Lima yesterday and stay for 6 weeks in Miraflores. Really nice here

I need some help, though, maybe someone can answer my questions. Would be very appreciated.

1) Where is the best place to change money? Where can I get a good exchange rate for changing 2k€ or so?

2) I heard about Taxi applications. How do I find them? Would probably be better than picking up random taxis from the street.

Thx in advance

And one more question:

What is the best way to get mobile internet in Lima?

I haven't played it yet but I've heard there's a soft 5-5 soles game that runs at Atlantic city on Av Benevides every evening.

AC or fiesta if ur in miraflores, they're a block away from each other. both don't start until around 6pm. limits vary, but nosebleeds have ran before. Generally soft. collusion happens.

Doesn't look like this thread &/or Peru gets much love from the 2+2 community, but if anyone is in Lima (or elsewhere in Peru as I'll be traveling the gringo circuit) and wants to grab a few beers or Pisco sours, get in touch or send me a PM. I arrive Lima Jan, 21st and will be there at least for 3-4 days before heading elsewhere. If anyone has advice about "must do" places to travel & see (beyond obvious like Machu Pichu, Inca Trail, etc.) let me know...planning on eating lots of ceviche in Lima, here's hoping I don't end up ****ting water for the first week!

It all depends on what you consider a must do, if you are looking for a good safe nightlife Miraflores is your best bet. Visiting un-official poker rooms would be on my "must do" list.
