will be travelling around europe for 6 months, currently am just using an atm card however i get charged $5aud plus exchange rate % every time i get money out.

This appears to be still correct for the Schwab Visa Card. I had always assumed I was being screwed by Visa, but I guess it's the middle party that's been doing the screwing.
