Currently in Cambodia, looking to go to Vietnam (possibly) in 6months to a year for an unspecified amount of time. How is the Visa situation working out right now? I'm American so no freebies there. Also, I am only 29 and will probably not qualify for retirement. Finally, I don't want to teach.

What are my options for long term stay (retired/playing poker)? I've spent about a week in HCMC before and it would probably be a great base of operations for me.

What is the cost situation like in HCMC? Any idea compared to Sihanoukville? I'm on a limited monthly budget but would love to move to the city for quite a while. Also, is PokerStars accessible? Any advice would be great.

Hey, as far as the visa situations goes, it is similar to Thailand (border runs every 3 months, albeit you might get away with doing extensions within the country if you find the right agent ($$$ for officials)).

Pokerstars is fine. Definitely not as cheap as Sihanoukville (nothing is, really).

No restrictions on border runs. Every 3 months, 1day/immediate re-entry unlimited?

How much would a cheap studio go for in District 1 or 2?

You will need to get another poster to chime in as far as HCMC goes (or read back ITT, there has been some info/prices posted in the past year or so...). As far as the visa situation goes, I do believe it is unlimited... until it isn't anymore. It has been changing quite quickly over the past couple of years.

WTF is that sky high coffee expense, you must be French
Spoiler:
Canadian
or something

I use to spend about 2k+/month in SEA, but now am spending my lowest in ages over here : about 600$/month in danang (my gf is paying a good chunk of the expenses, so we lowered them significantly, especially in regards to our apartment).

I'll be on a budget of $800-$1100/mo so hoping I can make it work without too much of a lifestyle decline.

Americans only tourist visa option is a 1 year multiple entry. Run you around $200.

Hey Vietnam...I am visiting in April/May from the US. I'm coming for expedition of the Son Doong Cave...5 days. Going to be epic I'm sure.

Anyone heard of Son Doong?

Also, of course, I want to see more of Vietnam for my 2nd week there. I definitely want to party and meet girls. Do they speak any English, or where is the best place to meet English speaking girls? Anyways, I'll glimpse over the forum for tips as I'm sure this has been discussed before.

There is a one year tourist visa offered to US passport holders. You are required to leave every 90 days. To extend without leaving on a tourist visa is very cost prohibitive. Cheapest option is to go that route if you dont mind leaving every 90 days.

If you dont want to leave every 90 days, your best option is to get a 1 yr Business visa which you can extend without leaving for the 90 days for more of a reasonable amount.

The cost for a 1 year multiple entry tourist visa is 35 USD. For 1 year multiple entry business visa - 140 USD. Both will require a 135$ stamp fee when you arrive. If you have no company sponsor for the business visa, which is prob your case, it cost 280usd.

Bare minimum to live here independently in a non poor state is 500usd/month. Thats with no luxuries or any kind of frills though and everything is still clean and you eat a balanced cheap meal etc.
- rent 150, food 100, visa 50, utilities 25, misc 175
- You can easily go cheaper but you start to drift into the uncomfortable realm; also the skys the limit if you want to spend more.
- Average spending per month would be 800-1000 for the average joe expat. I recommend 1,500 per month

PokerStars is easily accessible.

Banking here recently got harder but still possible.

I just wanted to throw this out there. I'm in Hanoi right now, and my bag is lost, its been 3 days now, and nobody seems to have any clue where it is. I'm thinking about just heading out of here, bc it's raining 24/7 and miserable. But I was wondering if it would be possible for anyone in HCM city (where I'm heading) to give me their address, as a place to send it if it ever gets found. Then I could just pick up when I'm there. So if anyone can help, please PM me, thanks!

Ok, nevermind, it finally got back to me a few hours after I posted this.

Also a PSA to American travelers thinking about heading to vietnam, they changed the 1 year visa thing a few weeks ago. Now you can get 1 month and 3 month visas again. I paid $17 for the online pre-approved visa on arrival and then $25 for the 30 day visa at the airport. So a lot better than what it was for the last few months! $50 gets you a 3 month visa.

Also, wtf is with this weather? I thought January has like the least precipitation of any month. Everywhere I google has constant rain for the next week+

Look at the flooding in southern Thailand, all those storms are going through Vietnam first. I think it's one of those once every 50 year type things.
Just bad luck.

Hey,

Ive never been to Vietnam and maybe looking to go for a month with intention to grind online mainly. Im looking for something different than Thailand or Phillippines.

Good internet is important and getting along with english. I dont want to live in a big city (mainly cause of pollution and paying for it more than for living in smaller ones). I like peacefull environment, being close to nature and having some activities other than poker.

Budget is max. 1,5k/month (gym in appartment / running track & pool or close enough is somewhat important) If you can suggest me something in Vietnam would apprechiate it.

I would say Da Nang or Nha Trang. I have been living in Da Nang for a while so if you want more info don't hesitate to ask. Internet is good (when the internet cable in the sea is not broken ), same for the 3g (Viettel). Da Nang is not a small city but if you stay for ex near A La Carte Hotel or near Holiday Beach Hotel, you don't feel like you are living in a big city more like a big village, cool vibe srs. And if you need anything the city centre is only 10-15 min by taxi/motorbike.

If you want more info you can check this post that i have made when I was living there

I can make you a comparison with Chiang Mai, I have lived in Chiang Mai many years and I am now living in Da Nang. In term of size and population, the both cities are approximately the same.

Da Nang

the +

+ Da Nang is more beautiful (especially Bach Dang street, Han river, the bridges at night, the beach, the sea)

+ the kindness of the locals (not a huge difference with Chiang Mai but overall I think that Da Nang beat Chiang Mai)

+ the criminality. Chiang Mai is safe but imo Da Nang is safer that Chiang Mai. I never saw there in Da Nang international biker gangs, dudes connected with international mafias, not like in Chiang Mai. And there in Da Nang, no bag/mobile snatching, no scam or very few scams, not like in Saigon or Hanoi.

+ visa. More easy and cheaper that Thailand.

the -

- the nightlife. Easy win for Chiang Mai. The nightlife is less developed in Da Nang which is normal because Chiang Mai is way more touristic that Da Nang.

- the expat community. Same that for the nightlife, smaller that in Chiang Mai. There are around 1'000 expats living in Da Nang from what i have heard.

Da Nang by day :

I made a mistake in my last post, I m not living there anymore. For the apartment, as usual, find an area that you like (for me it was around Holiday Beach) then walk around and explore all the small streets looking for signs of rental, ask the locals etc. I found my mine there like that (serviced apartment, a 1 bedroom), a few streets behind Holiday Beach hotel, 5 min walking from the beach, for 400 usd per month short term contract.
