it's mexico, you really don't need anything. I've been stopped by military checkpoints many times (they have a checkpoint between my house and puerto nuevo) and they don't ever ask for ID or paperwork, they wanted me to pop my trunk once.
You can get an FMM visa as soon as you cross the border...that's a $24 tourist visa good for 6 months.
Once here, you can get an FM-2 or FM-3 visa, and the laws are always changing, but those will give you Mexican residency for 1 year. I'm not sure of the difference between FM 2 and 3, and neither are really necessary, but it does 100% establish residency and makes it easier to do things like prove to stars that you live here, open any kind of bank account at any bank, I believe you need it to get a Neteller account?, show police you're living/working here full time, and gives you a legitimate Mexican ID card.
I don't have the FMM visa. I guess I'll get one next time I cross the border, but really not worried about it.
