San Diego has a trolley that will take you to the border (within walking distance).

It seems like it's a bit of a pain to take buses from the airport to the nearest trolley stop, so may be better to take cab from airport to trolley.

technically thats the best way. cross the border w/ ur ****, dont get a fmm... then come back later with next to nothing and get your fmm. if you are lazy and dont mind the potential for some kind of fees/taxes then go for it.

Yea I would guess it is a 10 dollar cab ride from airport to the trolley stop

What if the only electronics you bring are laptop and ipod?

Do you need to get FMM before you go to Rosarito? (sounds like it's far enough inside Mexico to require FMM, but they never check?)

Is there a place to get FMM in Rosarito?

Flights to Tijuana seem expensive and I'm guessing cabs from SD-Rosarita are pretty expensive as well.

I'm looking at setting up a place and splitting time between OK and Rosarita. Thanks!
As someone suggested, try Kayak.com for deals.

Would also try AllegiantAir.com, depending on where you are in OK. There are flights ~$150 or less from Wichita, KS, Branson, MO, or Northwest Arkansas to Los Angeles. You can have a couple carry-on bags, but they charge for everything (checked bags, assigned seats, food/water, etc.).

If you end up flying into LA, would probably take cab to train station, train to S.D. and trolley to border. Cross border, then take cab to Rosarito. I'd guess you would be able to make it from LA to Rosarito for ~$100. Make sure you check into train/trolley ahead of time, don't just show up obv.

the less you have the less problems you'll have. you dont need a fmm to go to rosarito, most dont have it. and no you can only get them at the border afaik. fm3s you can get in rosarito once you have a fmm.

Ya, as far as I know the border zone is Baja goes all the way down to Ensenada so there shouldn't be any checks. Of course, we all intend on being there longer than 72 hrs so we technically do need an FMM, but I wonder if anyone has had any trouble without it.

Not sure if I should even bother getting one or if it will matter.

Has anyone tried to get a FM3?

I don't understand the border tax thing. If you bring a couple laptops you will be taxed to bring them across the border?

technically yes. there is an import tax on electronics and there's some weird rules around it as well. When I get mail sent to me, the mail company pays the import tax and I have to repay them. Don't stop and get the FMM, you dont need it anyways, and even if you WANT one its not high on your list of priorities.
The tax is supossed to be 10%, but I heard they just google whatever the item is and assume the first price that pops up, so each laptop may cost you $100 or so if you declare em. Just drive through in the normal line, don't declare anything.

fwiw the emergency rooms here are helpful

If you're walking across border, are electronics still an issue?

Where is the immigration office in TJ?

i used to sell a ton of live venue music gear to guys from mexico and they would always ask for multiple receipts, or to lower the price on the receipt so they dont have to pay as much at the border. i was told they can bring one piece each for free, but any other items are taxed. im not sure what the current rules are as its been about 3yrs since selling gear. just some info i have been told by a ton of mexico buyers that would come to USA for gear for much less than in mexico. this is a FWIW type post. gl.

This.

I drove down with car full of stuff and 2 TVs(one being a big screen) and had no problems in the "do not declare line."

such a sick place for 1k/mo. unless i find a deal i can't pass up on cabo it's gonna be rosarito for me.

if i can find a roommate soon i'll use up some vacation time and maybe a weekend or two to fly to sd for, take a cab to rosarito and begin the process of getting a place, setting up utilities, renting a mailbox and shipping some of my stuff down there that way i can get on the grind immediately upon arrival come january

got rosetta stone and a book on spanish. never took spanish in high school because i swore i'd never need it. now i may not need it until moving somewhere deeper into mexico but it'll still benefit me greatly to learn. life is funny.
