Yea, but I hear it's a pretty horrible idea. Why would you want to do that?

travelling with laptop monitors and over 10k cash on a plane doesnt seem like a great idea anymore in today's world.

Can anyone compare costs in playa vs somewhere like thailand?

In thailand I stayed at 3 star hotels for 30$ a night, and rented places for 500 for a month. What kind of place can you get for 700-900$ furnished with some sort of kitchen? can anyone post a link to something in this range?

dont care about food / drink prices, providing I can cook some meals at home.

Can we drive down there? are there scooters for rent? how much for a monthly scooter?

I dont live in Playa but I vacation there often. IMO the best way to get around is by bicycle. Im actually heading there in a few weeks and if the guy I normally rent bicycles from is not availble to rent from I will most likely buy two of them. If I end up purchasing them does anyone have interest in buying them from me when I am finished using them? I know its probably a strange thing to purchase bikes just to use them for 10 days but its honestly the easiest way to get around down there.

I would say that the average tourist is willing to spend more in playa del carmen than in most parts of thailand. Therefore there are a lot of options that you would have to ignore if you want to live cheap here, which makes it seem like it's expensive.
Just getting a decent flat, cook by yourself and eat out some, a couple of nights party every now and then. You could quite easily survive on 1k usd a month here.

khan, i disagree. january is the coldest month, 70 during the day, 50 at night.

my 1st place in playa was a 1BR for $850/month (prolly the most you'd pay for a 1BR) on 5th Ave/ Calle 12. Electricity comes every 2 months and was about $100-$150 total. all else was included but internet/cable tv won't cost more $35ish USD per month.

I fed myself on about $50/week for groceries when i ate in, sticking to basically my american diet. then factor in alcohol at bars/restaurants etc. beer is 30-40 pesos ($3), liquor drinks from 50-150 pesos, usually closer to 80 in general depending on where you are. ($6)

It may be the coldest month of the year but it's a bit warmer than that I'd say. If you search on google or something similar it says high:80 and low:68.
T-shirt and shorts were more than enough for me last January.
Your prices seems accurate though.

Hello

Me and my friend plus his girlfriend are moving to PDC on 2nd of December (flight to Cancun) for 3 months. We haven't been to latin America yet, but we are quite experienced in traveling.

Our plan is to book couple of nights in hotel (recommendations appricieted) and find some flat with 2-3 bedrooms. It would be great if someone here can pass contact to trustworthy real estate agents (or if you are looking for tenants or maybe would like to team up with us finding bigger place) it would be great.

Our plan beside grinding is to learn spanish in language school (I already found on previus page recomendation for Solexico) and go to the gym 2-3 times a week.

For any tips & advices we will be very greatful and you have got beer on my round when we arrive!

touche on temps. really just stabbed at it. the more i think about it, it still wasn't jeans weather for me at night, so 68-80 seems way more legit. guess that goes to show how much my temp scale has slid. when 68 feels chilly...until you put jeans on, and then you're sweating again. ugh i miss playa.

Does anyone have an open room in PDC? PM me info if so. Looking for short term (1-4 months) and wouldn't even be there whole time, but will pay. Would prob be back/forth from home (NYC) throughout however long I'm living there.

Also, does anyone train at either of the BJJ schools down there? From a web search it seems there's a Carlson Gracie school and also a Gracie Barra. If anyone does, is there one that's clearly better? BJJ is a necessity for me so I'm interested to know.

Update: Would agree to up to 6 months if anyone has a room available.

Hi Chief,

I'm looking for a room, too. Maybe we could rent something together? I've done some MMA and love to watch UFC so that'd be cool I guess. I'm 20 years old and from Germany, could rent up to 1k/month~. Send me your skype / Email, can't send PM's yet

Hey guys I'm in Playa Del Carmen right now with 2 of my friends. We all play mtts full time and live in Costa Rica currently and came to PDC for our visa renewals.

We were wondering if any of you guys would like to get a beer or some food with us while we are here. We are strongly considering moving here when our lease expires in Costa Rica. We will be here until Tuesday morning and we are staying at a hotel kind of around Yo Taco.

Thanks guys!

We don't have phones here so PM me and we can talk on here or Skype

Also... Does anyone know of a good ATM in town to get cash out using the neteller Net+ cards?

do you mean an ATM that lets you cash out alot at once?

Banamex only lets you do $6000 MXN, don't know if the others are any better.
