Ottawa.

I use to spend a lot of time in Montreal and quasi-lived there for a short period six years ago but last night was my first time back in a couple of years. I hope to make it out more often in the future. Ottawa is a horrible city.

Henry it was really cool meeting you last night but it's a shame that we didn't have more time to get acquainted. I'm not sure how you can stand Ottawa it seems like every time I've been there all the streets are deserted and the night life just felt completely non existent. Maybe I was in the wrong parts of downtown I don't know. When you do come back to mtl definitively let us know

And also meeting Calm, Thremp and Mittens was the nuts

It was nice to meet you as well. It was fairly rushed trip and next time we'll organize better. Who was the other guy? I got the impression he was also a 2P2er but didn't get a name?

That is what Ottawa is pretty accurate for Ottawa. We have had MTL promoters try get clubs going but the half-life of a good club is typically measured in weeks. No one has even bothered to try in well over a year now. There are the occasional good events -- but not many. When you leave Ottawa and come back is when you realize just how horrible it is.

It has been three out-of-town weekends in a row so likely not going to head back till late July or early August.

very easy, for the most part lots of people in the city speak perfect english, just some small sections where it is not spoken perfectly. You literally need no french to get around here, but it would help.

Oh nice, yeah I'm in Ontario right now, I really want to checkout Montreal. I was reading your blog johnnyrocket and I see you travelled a ton around the world. Comparing to all the places you been, how do you like Montreal (as far as nightlife, women, food, the people, entertainment, living in as a poker player) ??? You need to update your blog, its sick lol.

Yeah this. I've lived here for a year and speak zero french, not because I'm lazy, but because it's really not necessary. The only people anywhere near downtown who don't speak english are bus drivers and taxi drivers.

I will, the next update on Buenos Aires is almost finished. Montreal has semi comparable nightlife, in the middle of the the places i've seen, the people are nice (nicer elsewhere), but they speak tons of english here so it's nice. The entertainment is whatever, obviously better in like New York and big US cities. As a poker player I like it, I wouldn't recommend it to those on a budget, the alcohol is very expensive and so is the nightlife compared to other places, my budget is whatever so I like it a lot, the food is pretty poor compared to the US, but decent compared to elsewhere, also it is more expensive than places I've been, but no where near like Tokyo and those places

When it comes to major Canadian cities (and we don't have many -- maybe six at most) Montreal is one of the least expensive. Canada is just expensive compared to most of the States.

For someone from the States there are a lot of things that are going to really catch them off guard.

The sales tax (12-15%) is considerably higher than in the States.

Alcohol, gasoline, fast food, chain restaurants, and groceries are all considerably more expensive.

Less so in Montreal but for the other major cities accommodation is astronomically more than in the States.

I'm possibly looking to get a furnished month to month rental in Montreal. Can you guys tell me the best location to live and the best way to find a month to month rental? I would like to have it set up before arriving.

In terms of location, I would like it to be in a clean, safe area, within walking distance to bars/subway/restaurants. Price isn't a huge issue.

Thanks!

There are a few buildings like that. It depends on if you want to be right in the middle of the club district or right in the middle of old Montreal which also has very active nightlife

This is from memory and dated so some of these might not even be there anymore

Le Riopelle and Club Mosaique -- sort of between the two sections of nightlife so a pretty good option.

Les Etoiles -- I think this was in old montreal

Golden Square Mile Suites -- This was one of my final choices but now I can't remember where it is but somewhere downtown.

Stanley Suites -- This was also on my final list. I think it was near the main club district.

There are also options on the West Island (not convient) and Westmount (the upscale area of Montreal)

I ended up just going with the W and my reason for being there was short lived so never ended up moving into any of these. I have never been inside but I do live in a building like this and you want to see it first. My floor we all have our own furniture but I recently got to see one of the furnished floors and it was rather horrible. The building common areas are 5-star hotel like but then the furnished suites were 20 year old Days Inn style. For $3000+ a month I would have expected a lot better. I suggest you not commit to anything without seeing it or having someone see it. Given my experience with two of these buildings the pictures on the website is not necessarily what you get.

Yeah you'll pay a huge premium for a corporate short-term rental. Craigslist is better IME, unless price is really not an issue at all. Look in either the plateau or downtown.

Does anyone know a good maid in the area? I live in the McGill Ghetto, just looking for someone to come tidy up the place every week or two.

And if anyone is looking for a personal chef, I found a sweet cook who has been buying and preparing about two weeks worth of solid food for me for $100 (plus food cost) - just let me know and I'll shoot you his contact info.
