Overall murder rate is pretty much irrelevant for the average poker n00b. As in most places, homicides in Medellin and Bogota are generally isolated to neighborhoods that poker players would never visit. Plus dead gringos is bad for business, so that's
usually out of the equation even in a worse-case scenario.
As the U.S. Department of State says, "The most prevalent threat to Americans in Colombia’s largest cities is street crime, including, but not limited to, muggings, assaults, cell phone theft, credit card/ATM card fraud, and burglaries." Most people--both Colombians and foreigners--would agree that Bogota is more dangerous in that respect (although I haven't seen any statistics to back it up). That's been my impression as well, but I'd say they're definitely in the same ballpark, i.e. have to be equally careful in both.
