Re: Official China Thread (Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, etc)
when are you staying till rakes? afaik from the hkph website you must be a member to bring in guests... membership is $500hkd for a year including that nights entry fee ($250)
all people must pay the $250 entry fee which serves as rake so it's not too bad of a deal
members are allowed to bring in guests though

Venetian is in the middle of nowhere and a pain in the ass to get to.
Imo just stick to Wynn if not Wynn then than Grand Lisboa. At least you're close to civilization

Re: Official China Thread (Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, etc)
Okay, I will post my fullish HK Budget Hostel TR here:
1. Good TP. Really crucial, and they had the good, soft stuff. This deserves to be #1.
2. Tiny, of course, but plenty of room all the same. Could have fit 6 small beds in the room, including bathcloset. Much more room than expected.
3. Clean, clean, except some towels had a few small stains (standard). Cleaned once per day, new towels as well. Great AC.
4. Staff was not helpful. Understanding, yes, but otherwise useless. Barely spoke English, couldn't help me out with finding things, no maps or anything, expect no real service, although some were nice enough (the girl not so much).
5. Hard to meet other guests. I bumped into a few in the "lobby", but it's not really a social place.
6. WiFi only in one area that serves maybe 2 rooms and the "lobby" (wooden plank with 1in of cushioning near a TV showing all Chinese crap). Otherwise, no luck. But it was a 9/9mbps connection at least, with the bandwidth not being used really.
7. No lockers, security blew, easy to break into the rooms, although there was regularly a "maid" (old man) running around cleaning, etc, during the day.
8. Location is okay. Not bad, not good. Mong Kok seemed like a younger area, so for a lot of the members on this board it might be nice, but I would've preferred TST or Central/Causeway. Better food in TST/Mids/Central, too.
9. The street near the entrance stank to ****. I smelled a lot of horrendous things walking down the streets in HK, but that one corner was BY FAR the worst in the entire city. I don't know what the cooks were doing wrong with the seafood, but they were doing it very goddamn wrong. Not an issue in the rooms, but it wasn't the way I wanted to start and end every day.
10. 1 or 2 English channels (BBC, I think) only on the tiny TV. Plus side: there was a TV with 1 or 2 English channels (BBC, I think).
11. Water tasted like crap, of course, no fridge.
12. Hot water was weak, ran out quickly, poor heat/cold control, weak water stream.
13. No proper table/desk.
14. No chair, just a stool. I really, really hate not having a chair.
15. Oh, a ****ing recording studio right next to the room. Lovely (note Metallica cover issue in above postings).
16. No touts near the entrances.
Worth $25/night and not a penny more.

What? It was definitely a meat stand. not a seafood specific one, though.

If it smelled like a cross between week old garbage and a public bathroom, then what you were smelling was probably stinky tofu.
There are street vendors all over Kowloon selling the stuff. The smell is abhorrent, but lots of Chinese people love it.

Explains why that spot was so popular, that had to be the stinkiest tofu on earth.
