yeah, the blog business is a helluva hard way to make money from what I understand (liveblogging too, unless you look like the girl in your avatar). I think 500 a month would be fantastic for any blogger. It helps that I'm literate (I have questions about some of the people in the 2+2 blogs area)

I'm conflicted on this book. Seems like it could be interesting. But from a scientific viewpoint, taking 6 people chosen not at random and trying to make some conclusions about China is silly.

Call me a hater, but I don't specially like that type of pseudo scientist. Kinda like the new trend on instagram. Everyone give themselves some fancy title.

Not that I have much insight on this but I was coincidentally talking about this with a group of friends a few days back. One said a good way to spot if a country is behind on the curve is if there is lots of skilled working class people and plenty of rich higher ups, but no middle class management to fill the gap. This means that as an educated foreigner you become extreme valuable and it will be very easy to get higher position jobs, and also makes it more interesting to start a business of your own since lack of middle management means that not many businesses thrive and grow up to their potential, meaning there's lack of strong competition and lots of opportunities. Basically there's workers and money but nobody smart/educated enough to make **** work.

I had never thought about it like this but it sounds like it makes a lot of sense and would also explain LB's quote since Chiner was exactly like this 15 years ago but now the complete opposite. Resulting in the majority of jobs left for foreigners are things where you're going to be overqualified and underpaid and mostly just needed because you have a white face, or much higher-end jobs where it's going to be hard to land it due to the many requirements. And good luck building a big ass business yourself.

I can see that I guess. Let's take a friend of mine as an example: he came to China in 2008 as a teacher for Aston. He was given increasing responsibilities until he was one of their managers. He parlayed that into a job as a representative for a British education company (hes English) working in China. Now he manages one of their China offices for a lot more than a teacher makes. Now lets look at my job last year as a counter example in 2016-I worked for a company with 11 training centers in a major city. The ONLY foreigner employed as anything other than a teacher was basically just a liaison between the foreigners and company (and as far as I can tell, his real job was passing on the dictates of the Chinese management and keeping the foreigners from ever speaking to them).


It's not all bad though. A friend has found a niche doing "cultural training" kind of things. basically, even the vast majority of English-speaking Chinese are remarkably ignorant about the outside world and how to successfully navigate it socially. One example, just yesterday a coworker (why do Chinese always say "colleague"-pronounced "colliger" instead) asked me if it was normal for Westerners to want to get intimate with someone the second time they've met. She speaks excellent english and works with foreigners, but the naivete in that question was amazing. Anyway, how much money has been lost by Chinese business because their reps just had bad social skills or couldn't navigate a foreign cultures social mores?

There will always be things to do successfully, but that doesn't mean it's the place to be. You can find a need to fill in any country.

It's kind of like poker. The place to be is the place where you have the biggest edge compared to the field. China is PokerStars 2015. Colombia is PartyPoker 2006. You are the 3bb/100 2013 type. Where would you rather go if winning is the goal? Haha.

yeah I get what you're saying. I think at this point I'm probably too invested in China to essentially start over again, but I've always wanted to travel to S America.

Plan is to mostly play some 2/5, don;t know how it translates to in HKD.

Which ones do you recommend?

Hopefully someone who has been there more recently can chime in but I expect you won't find limits that low. Minimum probably the equivalent of about 12 usd bb.
