Hey guys,

Ill be in HK on my way to Thailand next week and Im looking for a room to rent for three nights or so. Id like a private room in HK island for 30-40 a night, is this possible? Any suggestion?

Someone mentioned to me this neighborhoods as the best to stay for a couple days: Sheung Wan, Wanchai or Causeway, is he right?

Thanks in advance!

I've been traveling europe before and I make okay money playing poker but I think it would really help with the stress if I had some sort of stable income which is why I was interested when I heard you can get teaching jobs in china (which I'm still open to if its a possibility). I'm aware that most of these asian countries have a very low gdp per capita so 2k/m for teaching a few hours a week seems really good. I also met a couple of foreigners who work for bars here in phuket and in bangkok. My standards aren't too high, if I can get like 1k/m which probably covers the large majority of my monthly expenses it would really be good for me cause I don't like having to always withdraw from my roll. Do you guys know of anything? And how would I go about finding one
I'm interested in the teaching questions as well, but why not ask the friends who you met working for bars how to get a job doing that and the pay?

Tried that but no good finds. Will probably end up booking a private room at some hostel, found some decent ones for 44-55 bucks a night (slightly more expensive on saturday though).

There are lots of schools in Guangdong where teachers work illegally because they have easy access to the Macau/HK border for visa runs.

If you have a good personality your immediate goal should be trying to get private students anyways. This will pay much more and be much easier work. Moving this to the China thread if I can figure out how, there's already a lot of information there. Please stop posting this same question in every forum. It's not really helpful and also is a pretty poor way to plan out your life imo. Do some research on which country you are actually insterested in living in and then do research on jobs there.

You'll have to go to the china embassy in central during their morning shift and wait in line. You can get it 24 hours later during their afternoon shift if you are willing to pay more.

I've been denied the "rush service" both times I've asked for it.

Also they are not open on weekends and it's 4 working days to process the visa, so beware with planning out your trip.

Think im ****ed cuz I get there thursday at 18h and leave on sunday so I wont have time to do it

Will probably end up getting a plane ticket HK-BKK which is ok but not what I wanted the most.

A final question (I hope):

I found some rooms on Tsim Sha Tsui that are within my budget, but Im afraid it might be too far away from city centre. How long will it take me to get from there to the centre and whats the best way to make the trip?

Thanks in advance

Tst is the city center for Kowloon side. It's a quick mtr ride or you can walk to the star ferry (I'd do this at least once) and be in central very quickly.

And how much does it cost the ferry/mtr ride? They run those services 24hs?

Definitely not 24 hours. I think mtr closes at 1 am star ferry much earlier.

It's cheap.

Do any of you guys know more about the phone situation here? Apparently everybody has to register their phones now. I tried registering my phone myself (I'm legal and my Chinese is pretty good) but the China Unicom shop wouldn't register my phone and said I needed a Chinese person. Is this true?

I had a Chinese person buy me a SIM because the PSB had my passport at the time.

There is a shop in Taipa right next door to the Asian Supermarket which does computer repairs and sells parts, it has MSI branding all over it.

I'm not great with directions, but if you head to 'Park and Shop' cross the road and enter into the other building 'Opposite the weird temple park' there are shops and an Asian supermarket, its at the main entrance, opposite the camera shop.

Hey Guys,

Have a few backpacker friends staying with me in Macau, and they want to head from here to HCMC Vietnam, flights from HK/Macau are somewhat expensive, and it seems to be cheaper to head to Bangkok -> HCMC which seems backwards.

Is there a specific airline/hub/path for Vietnam from HK that's somewhat cheaper?

First off, make sure your friends have proper documentation...Americans and most other nationalities need to get a Visa through a Vietnamese consulate.

Any REAL backpacker shuns flights. If you must, you can fly from Macau or Hong Kong to Hanoi and take the overnight bus to Saigon (HCMC). I don't think there's a direct bus, so you will probably need to stop in either Hue or Nha Trang then transfer. You should plan carefully because these buses only run a few times a day. I did the opposite trip from HCMC to Hanoi with a transfer in Nha Trang...the buses were nice. The sleepers are a bit small but that's to be expected. The on board wifi is solid. When I did this two years ago it cost me around 50 dollars total. Due to the strength of the dollar, it's probably cheaper now.

--make sure you get an express bus-- if you get a minibus or van, they will stop for hitchhikers and it will take forever to get to your destination.
