having spent time there, living in thailand for years my thought is as long as you dont dress/act like you have money and avoid confrontations by all means you should be fine.

i dont do this in thailand but used to keep a 20 in my sock when i went on 1 day tijuana trips as lived near border. of the 50+times ive been there only once did i have to use it for bribe $. note it was my drunk friend being an idiot..
last thing in mexico better to take taxis if possible vs driving yourself far as getting hassled by the police.
