Doesnt dell or amazon send monitors down there?

I presume that means you have thrown away the original box? Just make sure that it is tightly packed with that packing foam stuff in whatever box you use. If you can hear the monitor moving in the box then pack it some more and then cross your fingers and hope that it arrives safely!

I tried that before on amazon UK but companies who sold the models I wanted don't ship to Malta. Some do though so worth a look.

New Residency Scheme Announced

Just got the info from my accountant.

Looks like some harsh changes.

A high net worth individuals’ scheme was launched by Finance Minister Tonio Fenech this morning to replace the permanent residence scheme, which was suspended abruptly at the beginning of the year. Mr Fenech said the new scheme will not attract people to come here simply to buy property but people who would also contribute to the local economy.
Under the new rules, the property bought by foreigners had to be worth a minimum of €400,000, up from the previous minimum of €116,000. Moreover, people buying property under the new scheme had to spend a minimum of 90 days per year living in Malta. Mr Mario Borg, from the Inland Revenue Department, explained that there were going to be two sets of rules, one for EU nationals and one for third country nationals.
EU nationals
· These had to spend a minimum of €400,000 on the purchase of property or €20,000 a year in rent;
· They had to have health insurance recognised across Europe;
· Pay an application fee of €6,000 to cover fees the government will be incurring through a sub-contracted international firm to do the 'fit and proper' test to check whether the applicant is 'desirable';
· The application forms can only be submitted by Maltese warrant holders registered with the Inland Revenue Department as authorised people;
· EU Nationals had to reside in Malta for a minimum of 90 days per year;
· Pay 15 per cent tax on foreign income and normal tax on any local income;
· The minimum tax payable was €20,000 a year and €2,500 tax per dependant.
Non-EU residents
· These also had to keep renewing their visa every three months or enter into a contract with the government with a financial bond of €500,000 and €150,000 per dependent, to effectively purchase permanent residency after five years, when the money will become the government's;
· Their minimum tax payment will be € 25,000 a year;
Existing Permanent Residents, Mr Borg said, will not lose their status unless they sold their property.

Some more info here: http://britishexpat.com/expatforum/m...02d81452794215

It changes the Permanent residency scheme. If i understand it correctly its mostly for non eu members as eu members still can use the (OR) Ordinary residency scheme.

tis sounds pretty interesting - the only question is if online poker income falls under foreign income or local income...

Yeah I don't think this will affect EU poker players. It is really mainly for non-EU people who want to basically purchase long term residency here. Luckily for me they are not changing the requirements for non-EU people who have existing permanent residency. But I haven't met any other non-EU poker players who have been living here for under the PR scheme anyways. For non-EU players who are thinking of moving here then the option exists again after a 9 month hiatus but it has more stringent terms.

You can go into Scan Malta and tell them to order you a display from the scan.co.uk website since they don't stock 30" displays here. But looking at the UK website it will cost at least 1000 GBP for a 30" Dell display. Then you will have to wait at least a month, maybe 2 months (things almost always take longer than what they tell you here in Malta. There's a good reason Swiss make watches and not the Maltese).

I just ordered a 24" Samsung SM2443BW LCD from Scan UK because I wanted the full 1920x1200 resolution. I couldn't find that res in any stores in the country. It took over 2 months to arrive because it wasn't in stock in the UK stores either and cost me 300 euros. I am not sure if they have more in stock in Malta now but you could call if anyone cares about the bigger resolution 24" display.

I think online poker falls under foreign income. But I believe the 15% tax rate only applies if you bring the capital into Malta. That is how it is for the permanent residency scheme which this replaces. Instead you just need to keep your winnings offshore to avoid tax. This new scheme is still being finalized though so the details may change.

For great value food and really nice staff check out 1927 in St Julians (about 4 doors up past macdonalds as you go up the hill). Its a family run restaurant with unreal food, Mediterranean cuisine, something for everyone. The potatoes they serve are the nicest I have ever eaten and by god i have had my fair share of potatoes! (Im an irish bogger)

You will need to ring to make a reservation as they only have about 12 tables. Try and get one of the outside tables as I think it makes the dining experience a bit more enjoyable. Number is 2135 4361

There is a comedy show this weekend at the Dolmen Hotel in Qawra (near Bugibba ~20mins from St J's.). It's on both Saturday Sept 24 at 8:30pm and Sun Sept 25 at 8:30pm. I went to the last 2 versions of this show and enjoyed it. The comedians are usually British or Irish. Tickets are 15 or 23 euros. It's a pretty big place so the upper balcony has never been close to full for the 3 Sunday shows that I've been to. So you can probably just show up and buy tix there. I will be at the Sunday show with a few other friends.

I am moving to Malta in the end of October, any offers for sharing a room/flat are welcome.
I would like to move to Sliema/St Julian's area, I will consider any other offers as well though.
