it happens every now and again but is very frustrating as my poker client freezes and I have to quit and relog back in and find all my tables again.. Thankfully I wasnt involved in any major pots this time..

Sorry for asking a question thats been answered shortly in this thread before but I wanna make sure before I change my lifeplans...

First of all, all info I care about is tax on LIVE-winnings all over the world (Im a MTT-player that plays a lot of live-tours)

My situation:
I live in Sweden and its no pokertax on winnings in Europe but 30% on winnings outside Europe. However... if you live more than 6 months in another country you follow that country's rules. So for example, if I live in England for 6 month and then go to WSOP in Vegas and win the main event I dont have pay any taxes neither in England or Sweden becouse pokerwinnings are 100% taxfree in England no matter where you in the world you win.

My questions are...
1. Is it the same if I live in Malta? Noone can tell me to pay taxes on my huge live-win in Vegas just becouse I lived in Malta for 6 months?

2. According to what I've read in this thread I guess I would have to pay taxes on it if I put the money in a maltese bank-account becouse I remitt the money to Malta but if I put it on my Swedish bank-account I shouldnt have a problem and it would be 100% legal?

Be aware of that tax-people in both countries will know that I have made the win and do what they can to tax me!

If I get YES to all these questions you will probably see me in Malta in November/December! =)

Another question... WHY THE HELL would you like to have a maltese-bankaccount!? It seems that all that follows is tax-problems! The reason I ask is becouse after reading this thread it seems very popular to get it.

You should take care to make sure that you eliminate your tax liabilities in Sweden. In Canada, for example, not closing down your bank accounts and severing all your ties (property, memberships, spouses, etc) could still mean that you are liable to Canada. Also, establishing yourself somewhere else is a requirement (though perhaps not so much in practice) of eliminating your liabilities from Canada. This includes things like bank accounts and having a place to live.

Your worldwide income is not taxed in Malta unless it is remitted there.

Seems like its a point to get a Maltese bankaccount just to establish myself more there then even if I dont wanna put any money inside it..

So I will probably close all my swedish bankaccounts and start to use some offshore accounts that I can use wherever I live.

Does anybody have some tips for what country and bank I should open up a bankaccount in?
I guess people will say Schweiz and Lichtenstein...

Is Spain okey or will they start to give me bull**** about taxes when I put a lot of money in a Spanish bankaccount? I really hope Spain is okey becouse I will probably get a bank-account there anyway..

The pokerplayers that live in Malta where do you have your offshore-accounts?

Gibraltar, Belize, Cayman islands, Cyprus, Phillipines, etc

I know accounts in Belize might be very expensive and only interesting if you can have an avrgae 10K balance or so.

Are the Philippines an interesting place to have an offshore account? If so, can you quickly explain why, and what bank, if any, is preferable there?

Thanks a lot.

I have no idea about the Phillipines regarding bank accounts tbh, I haventpersonally checked anything there yet.

A google searh came up with this site: http://www.expatfinder.com/philippin...ilippines.html

There's a dropdown menu on the top left which surely will provide more info on other countries.

Search google for offshore accounts or tax haven or someething like that.

email some banks in the different countries (I'd go with islands if I were you) and find out what their terms and conditions are, like interest/monthly costs/etc

I'd only go for a savings account offshore though, a running/payment account seems way to expensive to do it overseas.

Hey guys, planning on moving to Malta in a few weeks. Just had a few questions.

1. How long does it take to get a Malta ID card and is there anything we can do before we get there to get the process going?
- As far as I understand we have to have an ID card to open a bank account.
2. What should we say to the bank when opening an account ab what we do etc. pretty sure we don't want to mention that we play poker?
3. What bank is best/easiest to open an account at?
4. Do we have to have a return flight already booked upon entering Malta? I have read different things on this and was hoping somebody could clear that up for us.

Any other info you think would be helpful would be great. Thanks a lot.

You need a bank recommendation as far as I know from your USA bank, not an ID card

1: 7-10 days: you have to apply in Valetta, when your id-card is ready you receive a letter and you can pick it up at the same place. Nothing can be done to speed up the process afaik.

2. Do NOT mention that you play poker; I got rejected at the HSBC when i said what I did. Just say something like you are setting up an internet business.

3. Next stop: Bank of Valetta; do need a letter of recommendation from you bank in country of origin.

4. Never heard of that tbh; I am a European; so open borders for me. But I cannot believe a law like that is active here.

First time i flew to Malta with a one way ticket customs was waiting for me specifically at the gate, checked my handluggage and asked questions about what i was going to do in Malta, which was a bit weird because they really were there just for me, i could see them staring at me when i was still at the back of the line and they did'nt question anyone else.

A few people are saying you need a Maltese ID card and a few are saying you just need a recommendation letter from your US bank. Has any1 opened a bank account without a Maltese ID card?

thanks

Re: Tax, ive moved large amounts through my accounts and never paid tax nor had any questions asked but I wouldnt take my word on this without speaking to an advisor who really knows..

You do need a maltese ID card afaik to open up an HSBC account..

Sidenote: Anyone got a Herman Miller chair for sale or know where I can pick one up at the normal retail price in Malta? I found a store "Fino"? who stock the "Herman Miller Embody" but are selling it at +50% of normal retail price and on principle thats just gay

I'm still trying to figure out the best line to take regarding taxes in Malta. SunTzuReps told me afahk no pokerplayers play taxes on winnings in Malta. In theory you can be taxable if you remit you winnings here; but has never happened.

I do have some questions:

1. Do you guys just remit your winnings in a Maltese bank account anyway or have an offshore bankaccount; so the money is never remitted here; so never taxable?!

2. Does any player here in Malta pay taxes on his winnings?!

3. Does anyone know how it works with the permanent residence scheme; where you pay about 4K euro's as minimum taxes?!

4. Or simply how do you guys handle taxes?!

Thank you very much for helping me out.

Are there any non-EU citizens residing long term in Malta ITT? Curious about immigration within the Schengen area. So far it seems super complicated, but some legal firms can apparently make it quite easier for a few thousand $$. Not sure how this works in full and if these 'firms' can be trusted. Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't heard of that place but I'm here less than a week so maybe someone else will be able to tell you.

I used this guy from 2+2, he works for Dhalia:

Sound guy and should be able to hook you up if you PM/email him. In saying that I ended up using someone else but since he's from the forum it's probably best I give you his details.
