Thanks both, very helpful advice.

1-1-2-4 PLO sounds like a blast.

On the age thing I'm not super concerned about age itself, I like to hang out with all kinds of people young and old, just seems like there are a lot of posts ITT about getting ****faced and chasing tail. Awesome pursuits don't get me wrong, but I've slowed down a bit on that recently, esp the latter as I'm not single. I guess I'm just making sure I'm not moving to Ibiza. Is there much going on in terms of nightlife other than dance clubs - like a live music scene?

Also Manta, I'm curious with your apartment did you book something through Matt before you got there or are you waiting until you arrive?

Thanks. Maybe when I move there we can grab a drink and discuss our descent into old age

On the residency thing, it actually doesn't matter for me I can just stay there as a tourist, but it's an issue for my gf because she wants to go to university there and it's free if she's resident. We're both have UK passports though she is secretly Australian.

I really can't tell you anything reliable. If it is this important I'd check with the appropriate authorities anyway.

Nah not booked anything yet, meeting Matt who's showing me a few places when I arrive. Cruised the website (www.dhalialetting.com) to get a feel for how much places are and what my budget will get me in the areas I'm interested in.

With the student thing I would just cruise that gov of malta website, appears to have alot answers to questions you have/going to have. I will say though that as you have UK passports u can just breeze into Malta and then sort it out from there I guess if you have to visit embassys/get student visa.

There are many bars/clubs that aren't just nightclub binge drinking fests. One of the things that I liked about Malta when visiting was that seems to have a good variation of nightlife and super easy and quick to travel about.

Strong possibility I'll be moving to Malta in the next couple months and visiting next week to get a feel for the place. Have read through some but not all of this thread, so I apologize if I'm asking anything that's already been discussed:

1) Opening a bank account and moving money from poker accounts is easy?

2) How many months/year would you say there is good beach weather (warm enough to go in w/o a wetsuit)?

3) Anyone have 1 or 2 good club/bar suggestsions?

Any insight you can give me is appreciated.

And let me know if any of you all wanna grab a beer or go out sometime while I'm in town (Jan. 13-17).

my brother is gone there today for a few days, getting him to get me a bottle of cheap drink,

Anyone know the price of a bottle of

Johnny Walker Red Label Whiskey,

A nice bottle of Vodka

Bottle of captain Morgans Rum.

If they are significantly cheap, eg, bottle of Captain Walker in Ireland is 30 euro so willing to speng 30 euro if i can get something nice, Maybe Black Label Johnny Walker or a really smooth vodka, preferably flavoured so it mixes well with 7up

I haven't moved there yet obv, but so happens I just spent the last hour or so researching this then saw your post, so I'll chime in with what I've been able to figure out - but people who've actually done it might want to correct me.

Apparently to open a bank account in Malta you need a letter of reference from your bank in your home country, and it has to be sent bank to bank, ie you can't request it before you go and carry it with you. If your home bank is in the EU this is apparently a standard sort of thing they'll have an existing procedure for within the EU banking system, but if you're not from the EU it may be a pain in the ass getting it organized with your bank - I can't imagine any bank refusing to give you a reference, just that some people have a very frustrating experience getting through bank phone trees to explain what they want and organize it.

I've been reading various forums and it seems like the only people who have a really smooth experience are those who happen to bank with HSBC in their home country then open an HSBC account in Malta, because they have some sort of internal procedure for it. Other EU people seem to take around a month to get a reference sent to the branch in Malta, and non-EU people report wildly variable wait times -days to many months. IIRC correctly the only two major banks in Malta are HSBC and Bank of Valletta - and also Banif just opened shop but I don't know anything about them, even if they are a good deal they prob don't have many ATMs yet.

As far as poker goes no first hand experience, but I can't imagine there'd be any difficulties, online gaming is legal and Moneybookers/Neteller etc all fine in Malta. I also noticed when I was there last week that there are a ton of Moneygram offices around.

Nothing wrong with that obv, but are there many guys there like me, ie still like to go out but in a bit more of a chillaxed way?

2) Am I gonna have difficulty getting approved to rent an apartment being that my job is playing poker?

3) Is it possible to get residency without a job and without buying property?

4) Any live Omaha there? 08 ideally, but at least PLO?

Thanks in advance.
i'm moving there on the exact same date and have almost ident problems - my gf also wants to study there and i too want to go out, but like 3-4 times a month max

Definitely, that's very cool!

You can fly with cats (but you'll pay for it), or the other option is to drive there and get the ferry from Italy. I'm driving down from Prague to bring our stuff, and actually I'll be going through Austria (Innsbruck) on the way - haven't thought this out at all so don't know if it'd work, but depending on your plans and how much stuff you have there could be some sort of road trip / gas sharing opportunity here.

well I looked into bring a dog with me and it was going to be 450 pounds ($650, 500eu) one way via Air Malta from the UK. Oddly a fact I found out is the cost of importing an animal is based on size/dimensions and not what it is. Being a large dog I would say your cat should be much cheaper.

Also the cost of sending an animal by plane is dependant on the country/economy it is going to. For instance the $650 to take my dog to malta would be cut to <$300 on the way back due to the UK subsidizing/ having good budgets for airports etc. So that was interesting.

Obviously your cat will need the pet passport and info I used was at http://www.airmalta.com/pets

Anyways I decided not to take any pets and leave them with the family as the cost was going to be too much considering I'm planning to come back to the UK once every 1 or 2 months so paying $1000 a time to take pets with me is too much. I realize there are kennels etc but meh might change my mind at a later date.

Also the other issue you have to think about is if landlords are happy with you bringing pets, it might restrict the properties you can rent etc. Although saying that cats tend to be less of an issue than dogs due to not barking/creating as much disruption I guess.

Just so you know, I've heard some issues with people who import their cars into Malta. Granted they tend to be people who retire there and not for studies, you have to pay like a % of the perceived cost of the car and it can be redic high.

Saying that however I would look here http://www.transport.gov.mt/Page.aspx?pageid=574&lid=1 and it appears that you don't have to register your viechal/pay anything if you either don't have it in the country for more than 7 out of 12 months.

OR if your are studying its fine, so might be even more key for you to get that residence permit/ study visa etc.

Thanks for that but think it'll be okay is just a rental, will turn around and drive it back to Prague once I've dropped our stuff off (which is going to suck). I looked around and couldn't find anyone doing one way rentals to Malta, or even Italy.

Actually just researching car rentals and and between round trip tolls/ferries/gas etc it's so expensive I'm now considering just buying a €500 clunker on ebay and scrapping it when I get there.

FYP...

good luck.. you could always fly and get a removal company to move your stuff for you. No idea how much that costs.

I have no experience with rental companies but have you tried calling a big firm in Malta and seeing if you can rent from them in your home country and drop off with them?

Yeah no dice unfortunately. I can't even find a rental company that lets you take a car to Malta under any circumstances, regardless of where you return it. But I figure I'll be driving all of 5km in Malta so I'd have to run amazingly bad to crash. The best I've found so far is €1200 one way to Rome.

Fantastic

Matt81 from here has been super helpful with advice on apartments so reasonably confident he'll hook me up, but obv very welcome to other suggestions also if you know of places going etc. Don't arrive until April 1st so haven't been able to narrow it down much yet, am guessing a lot of stuff will be off the market then. Cheers!
