Re: Malta Chatter Thread

did anyone ever open a bank account, just saying that he's a poker player? or did everybody pretended to be looking for a job or whatever?
does banks ask questions in case of big and regular poker transactions?

Re: Malta Chatter Thread

I recently opened an account at hsbc, they asked what I do for a living and I was trying to explain them that I'm a poker affiliate, they didn't get it but also didn't care and just entered "self employed".

Oh and thanks elkatsumoto, I had a look at their site and it does look like they have a lot of stuff, but not the kind of wok I wanted.
Anyway, I found out Amazon.de delivers to Malta for very reasonable fees (like 10€) as long as you choose a product sold/delivered by them directly

Re: Malta Chatter Thread

Did HSBC require you to get a reference letter from your previous bank? I've heard this is usually a requirement with Maltese banks and can be a real headache if you're from the US because American banks won't mail anything to a foreign address for "security" reasons.

Have you processed any poker transactions yet through your HSBC account? I've heard some other 2p2'ers have been having problems processing poker-related transactions through HSBC in other countries such as Canada.

Re: Malta Chatter Thread

they didn't require anything like that. Didn't do any direct poker transactions yet but I always use moneybookers inbetween anyway, they work with moneybookers no questions asked.

I've read the thing about reference letters on their homepage as well but as I understood it this is only if you're not a resident (which I am and is really easy to do as an EU citizen, just go to the office, have them take pictures of you and claim your residency card a week later, don't know how/if it works for US citizens)

Re: Malta Chatter Thread

it's very tough open a bank acc when u r us citizen from what i've heard. as eu no problemo...

however rolling with HSBC is plain stupid when you are somehow pokerrelated - in other countries they already shutting down account because of this, my friend who had big life cash cannot transfer the money to HSBC bc they don't want poker aka gambling money, etc...

therefore hf in future, subandi

Re: Malta Chatter Thread

I opened an A/c with Bank of Valetta with just a Maltese ID, Passport and IBAN from previous Irish account. Told them I was working in gaming and they didn't ask for any proof.

In other news, anyone up for beers this weekend? It's hot out there..

I did that with HSBC like two years ago, but their politics regarding this has changed, and now the do not accept poker players anymore. My acc got closed without a warning early this year. And it looks like they introduced this policy evrywhere in the world as in UK i couldnt open an account as a poker player either. Try different bank tho.

This, but they didnt even ask me what kind of work I did here. And they sent a referral to my bank in my home country, you only need the adress of your local bank plus all other things Gkidd mentioned.

Re: Malta Chatter Thread

Hej Guys,

I am a German Pokerplayer who wants to move to Malta soon. In order to get to know the place a little better, I want to come down this week(end) for ~5-7 days to check out the area.
Can anyone rent out a room for a couple of nights? I need a place where I can grind while I'll be there.

During summer portomaso has the 2/4 game running quite alot.
Like said before, you wont find higher games in malta, only when there's some big tourny running.

Re: Malta Chatter Thread

Hello!

I have flights with my gf to malta 30th of june ( 29 looooong days ahead.. ).

We are going to live at least a year there. I have couple of people that i know there trough the magical world of internet BUT would be nice to get together with new people also who has the same spirit ( poker ) as myself. Feel free to PM me if you use windows messenger. I will add you up then. Would be nice to disguss, make new friends etc.

APARTMENT : We are going to search the apartment around sliema area, probably central, 400-700€ monthly rent and seaview would be great also. You guys have any experience how long it usually takes to find an apartment there? I booked a hotel for 4 nights, hoping to get the apartment by that ?

GYM : i have been told that this is the place to go? http://www.feelgood.com.mt/
They have pools there also so you can jump into swimming after training right? What about personal trainer, any experiences about that in that specific place? Iam bit of a newbie with training out on the gym, so would be nice for me to have somebody to show the first 10 times i will be doing everything correctly. Also my lack of motivation fights back my desire to go on gym...

TAXI : Do they have meters or is the price always negotiable? What are the odds being hustled by the driver?

Sicily : How long / often the ferry travels to sicily? Price? Would be nice to spend some days there also.

Will pop by for this thread several times for this period of 29 days ( and after that obv ) so heads up, there will be more newbie questions about living in Malta

Btw, read like last 20 pages about this thread and gotta say it feels that the atmosphere here is really good. Not the usual "about tree fiddy, lol shoot you face off jerk" 2p2 thread !

See you @ july!

edit: Not sure if i can receive PM`s so you can drop your MSN adress here if you like : superdunphy [ at ] yahoo . fi
