-to begin with don´t bother with real estates adds cause once you get there it will be about same same but different.
best advice is talking to one or 2 agents and giving them a short list of flats you like so they have an idea what makes you visit.

-bought 5 nights in a hotel for about 50€ through a booking portal (compare hotel rates and booking com for final booker).
wasn´t sure I would ever see the room for that price but no scam there, pretty cheap rates during winter here.

-on top of the rent it seems standard to have a flat fee for electricity and water that is adjusted every few months or whatever and difference is paid back or for.
_internet got installed 2h after I entered in the flat and the guy pulled the fibre cable from outsite and even dug a hole in the whole and it was like standard stuff.took like 30 min and got 25mbs for 40€ month i think.

-agencies fees are about half a month and one month deposit is asked.

-been asked for one year minimum long let contract and refused and picked a flat with 6 months mini.

Funny things around here welcome to malta:
-pay 8€ at airport for transfer give 20€ get 4€ back then a sorry.
-driver looked like this :

had a broken hand and couldnt read the paper infos (pray in the car)
-everyone wanna help you, knows someone or has a plan...now to see effective results I´m not sure of that.
-you can´t drink tap water, prepare to lift some gallons.
-cigarettes are super cheap.
-it´s windy,a lot.

finally I chose not to live in st julian like majority of people in this thread swear by and Ive settled in st pauls bay.
there´s a lot of shops here too (I thought it was completely dead),it´s way cheaper and quieter (also it´s not that far from st julian if u really want to go out once in a while,it´s by no means worse than crossing berlin or paris).

Ive been to the portomaso casino,it was pretty cool,1/2 and 2/5 NLH and small mtts every nights but obv not very crowded during winter.
might go back someday but for now I´ll have to grind.

cheers
If you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay for your apartment and how big is it(bedrooms, sqm2, and is it new). You can pm if you prefer.

Can you elaborate a little. What's with the summer, why will I be disappointed? Why is it ****? I am somewhat restricted bankroll wise, I have to keep paying the bills at home as well sigh.

Basically it's just a bit further away from where most of the fun stuff during summer is happening, but it's not a huge "disadvantage".
You're kinda close to Golden Bay, which is one of the biggest/best beaches on Malta; You should definitely check it out!

You'll be just fine unless you intend to go out like every two days

hummmm I´m here to grind and not to get distracted.
I don´t give a **** about the crappy st julian bars tbh (coming from berlin maybe I got picky music wise);st julian as I said is perfect for really young people that are here to drink more than play.
Personnally I´ll go walking on the promenade to chill, prolly do some scuba diving,etc... so im not really into bars.
From what I´ve seen st julian is very similar to juan les pins in france if anyone can relate to it.
activity not equal to quality.

visited a couple other appartments up to 500€ in qwara bugghiba st pauls bay zone and that´s what you can have.

I am heading over end of the month, can't wait to get my grind on.I think I'd rather prefer something a little quieter myself. Can always taxi my way over few times a month I fancy clubbing or whatnot.

Pfff been there done that whole going out every night thing, gets boring trust me. Everything in Malta seems just a stones throw away anywayz, think its like a 15 min journey if I wanted to go clubbing we'll see. I will be checking out several places beforehand and get a feel for each location and then make my choice.

Yeah of course, it's all a matter of choice.
I've been here for a while and a good part of my social circle is here and most of socializing involves going to restaurants and drinking, therefore St. Julians/Sliema/Paceville represents a great area for me to live in.

Other parts of Malta are by no means bad, depending on your interests the more lively areas might be preferrable though!

Yes, that's very funny. Did you know that that's actually how it works in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Finland, Italy and Sweden?

You asked the responsible office on whether you have to pay taxes on earnings in Malta, of course their response is always going to be "yes please, regards" in every case.

And yes, it's hilarious. In which world are they ever going to reply "Actually, we're not so sure ourselves, we'll notify you when we know"?

Either way, since you're from the UK it seems like the clear choice to remain a citizen of the UK and not worry about having to pay taxes on gambling winnings!

I don't know what you mean when you ask me if I'm aware of how it works in other european countries; I didn't realize all these countries were tax-free
They have to answer whatever is correct following their own rules. If I made the same question to the HMRC (UK "IRS") they would tell me that gambling winnings are tax free, as you can also find at their website.

I told you that poker winnings are tax free in many other countries because it seemed like it was a joke for you. It isn't any joke, there are countries where they won't steal anything from your poker earnings. And it seemed to me that Malta was one of those countries, that's why I asked their IRS.

I'm not a British citizen, I'm from Spain, and even if I were British, if I become a Malta tax resident, I would pay taxes in Malta, not in my country of citizenship.

Hotel for 2 or 3 nights make sense. You should contact Matt from Dhalia, he is the estate agent of almost all poker players in Malta. He knows poker players, gives you contact to Melita who provide your Internet etc.. not necessary to contact more estate agents.

Living in Sliema is also not smart because you just waste so much money for taking a cab if you want to go out and it is simply annoying. Sliema is not really as busy as St Julians and maybe better for people who are 30+ but in St Julians you have everything you need: good restaurants, good super market (Arcadian food store), casinos, Paceville .. and everything on the same place, so it's just the smartest thing to live in St Julians. Living in Gzira, Swieqi or some other place is really braindead, imo. And rents in St Julians are not so much more expensiv than in other places from my experience.

personnally I´ll recommend my agent from frank salt cause I said 500€ max and she shown me 400€ places which I find pretty cool (other one only show me 500€ places).

about last part again I´ll have to disagree again here.
it seems people have a hard time figuring out that not everyone gonna go to the casino, enjoy paceville,etc...
Some people like it quiet and go out once in a while, some like having bars downstairs and people everywhere.
Only thing really better in that area is the food store, malta really suck for that .

ps:btw anyone have the link for the site that do deliveries?

Hi guys, looking for 2 rooms for 3 months from March 1st, dont necessarily have to be in the same apartment/building etc but the same area would be just swell. Bonus points if you get me close to my beloved bakinc00kies.

obv it is still good on the weekends, friday and especially saturdays are always busy. there are 500k maltese and most of them love to drink and make party - during teh week february still sucks balls though

disagree with almost everything in this part.

only thing which differentiates sliema in case of st. julians is paceville and not everybody is enjoying pv like u and me probably

In fact Sliema is more busy daytime in summer than anywhere in St. Julians (there are way more people down at the rocks in front of tower road compared even to St. Georges Bay, restaurants are pretty much same same, all beach clubs are in Sliema (surfside, medasia playa, tigne lido, the big mall teh point is in sliema, biazza street is in sliema, etc...) - only disadvantage is obv if you grind 5days in teh casino or go out every 2nd day... Gzira is pretty much same locationwise like Sliema only cheaper and not as poshy. way to pv is the same. And alot of places in Swiqie are closer to paceville than places in St. Julians so i don't really see your braindead argument. In Swiqie u don't get seaview if you fancy that but u don't have seaview either in pender gardens iirc. problem in swiqie is there are no restaurants superclose by, thats the only real downside. For you specific case (alot of life playing and going out 5 times a week if possible) St. Julians is in fact teh best solution. For 90% of teh other people it will not make any difference if Sliema, Gzira, Swiqie or St. Ju locationwise...

Regarding St. Pauls Bay again:
When you are a pro grinder your social life lacks compared to any normal worker without you being able to do anything about it bc u work on your own hours in front of a screen. So you should at least try to keep up social life as much as possible in your freetime. your main contacts as players will be other players, people from teh gaming industry, other foreigners and tourists. You will find none of those people in St. Pauls and you will be not able to just go and meet with 3 other players for dinner, for coffee, for 2 pints, for 2 hours at teh beachclub, whatsoever. Obviously you can try to befriend maltese people in St. Pauls Bay though - gl with that and tell me how it's going.
I love Malta and I love teh maltese but teh people you will hang with and make party with will not be maltese. I've been there for a long while and have some very close maltese friends but still 90% of my friendcircle are foreigners living in and around St. Ju/Sliema.

obv. if you don't care about social life, don't like to go out, turn down the blinds as soon as there is sun, etc it doesn't matter where in Malta you live.

If you like interacting with other people on a regular basis though St. Julians area is much easier. And rents in Gzira/Swieqi compared to St. Pauls are pretty much samesame...

and one moar thing regarding the rent argument:

let's say you really only go out to party 3 times a month in pv you could've spent 100euros moar into rent into a place in st.ju area bc of taxi fares. alot of people don't seem to calculate this at at...
