Looking for an island

I'm thinking of moving to the philippines, costa rica, belize or something similar.

Checked the search feature and there's a lot of info, especially about the philippines, but I'm looking for info about more islands so I have something first hand to compare.

Things I'm looking for:

- Cost of living (rent, food, bills, etc)
- Internet stability
- Safety regarding mugging/robbing etc
- Taxes
- Visa since I'm from Europe
- Opening a bank account (read somewhere you have to deposit 50K in an account in Belize if you want to live there without a 'real job')
- Anything else that's useful

Thanks in advance

Re: Looking for an island

Probably not, will take a little trip around the world but I want to stay for say 3 months or longer, depending on where I am. (Costa rica is 90 days max before you have to leave the country for 72 hours)

I just go places and see where I like it and may end up somewhere for a very long time. Have to check what's possible regarding visa's etc though, so any info is welcome

Re: Looking for an island

sorry for not replying, had some stuff going on.

I know Costa Rica and Belize aren't islands, let's just say I'm looking for the white beaches, blue seas etc. At the time my mind instantly thought: island

I've been to Malta and it's nice, just a bit too rocky to my opinion.

Not looking to stay forever (might do, we'll see) but planning to move around. Start in Philippines, then move to Belize, Costa Rica and furtherdown.

So nothing's sure yet (far from), like when to go, where to start (maybe I'll even start in the Seychellen or w/e), how long to stay etc etc but it would be nice to at least get some useful info from people who've been there or still are.

Re: Looking for an island

U can consider phuket.
cheap, good food, few options for visa, nice sandy beaches, easy to open account, much safter than phillipines

Re: Looking for an island

what do you consider safe? I'm not planning to walk by myself at 4am in the slumbers.

I heard Philippines are quite okay as long as you're not flashing money and walking around by yourself in early hours.

Info not from a solid source though.

Can you elaborate what is considered safe in Phuket/Philippines?

The Philippines is pretty safe compared to Somalia or Afghanistan.

There's a reason that Thailand is by far the most popular destination.

Re: Looking for an island

Living in Phuket ~3 years never had any dangerous situation about robbery etc.

The main factor that drives people to crime is poverty. Phuket is definately richer than Phillipines. About 30% population in Phillipines lives below poverty line.

And there are no big cities in Phuket
