After I reading you SuperUberBob, definitelly the place you are looking here in Spain is a city in Andalucia.

Specially Granada or Sevilla, those are really nice places to live, people are very friendly, and if you could choose, take a look to Triana (Sevilla). I think its a beautiful city to live and it reflects the real spanish culture and lifestyle.

angreed that andalucia is the place to go..
i would chose malaga, tho.. (he claims that sevilla is too hot for him)
and i think malaga beats granada in many other things he is looking for (transport etc)

Malaga seems to be at the top of the list.

I'll be flying in there a week or so before my CELTA course begins. Hope to hit at least a couple other cities en route to Barcelona. If I decide to play any poker, it'll mostly be me tooling around at 2NL or 5NL online or if there's some home game around wherever I stay. My desire to play full-time is basically nil.

Thanks for the tips

Spain is a good place to live, but not a good place to work.
^This. The last sentence I say myself all the time. Right now half the people I know are unemployed and everybody else has crappy pay that goes down regularly (I'm a university professor and I make less than I did as a kid bagging groceries in the US).

Folks are starting to get hungry and this place could explode. Everybody wants out. I know someone who just moved to Cuba to find work (not a joke).

Unfortunately I can't disagree with Radix and Bobito.
Where do you guys live?

Strangely enough, education jobs (for foreign workers) are still up. With the 27% unemployment rate, people are looking to spruce up their resumes and the jobs are plentiful for the qualified ESL teacher as a result. Plus, I'm coming in during the peak hiring season. If there were no ESL jobs in Spain, I wouldn't be going.

I really don't care that much about money. People who teach generally aren't teaching out of greed. So long as I have enough to support myself, I'm fine. The rest is for showing off as far as I'm concerned.

How would I go about getting a room in Spain when I don't speak the language well enough to talk about renting? I'm not looking to get my own place while I'm there at the start. It'd be cheaper for me to just find somebody who needs a roommate.

I assume you are talking about the month after Barcelona.
I would say in city like Madrid and Barcelona, that won't be a problem. You would be able to find a room just using English.
Out side of those 2, I would say.

-Still try with English to find a flat to share.

-Learn enough basic Spanish to setup an appointment.
-Find some expat group (FB group, InterNations, Meetup ...) in your new city, they are usually helpful and sometime pass around ads.
-Have someone that could setup appointment for you and act as translator.

Memrise.com and Duolingo.com are very helpful resources for getting your Spanish up to speed (or any other language for that matter).

I want to live/travel through Spain for some time as well. I accept that getting a job is impossible/unfeasible, but surely it's still a nice place to be? I'd be happy to live off my savings and just enjoy the culture for a while. Every time I've been I've really liked it.

People aren't depressed everywhere are they? Because I always found Spanish people to have a really nice approach to life. I wouldn't have thought that high unemployment would kill their moods too much.

No, indeed I won't go that far.
Yeah maybe that's their problem.

As long as their basic living needs are still being met, and their national team is still awesome, what's the problem? lol... let the sangria keep on flowing

super uber bob,

your plan sounds pretty bad. you are going to be making a low wage in a country where you don't speak the language and you don't want to have ex pat friends despite the fact that most of your coworkers will be expats. this will not end well. i'd suggest revising your plans to avoid disappointment.

I have enough support to handle myself. I always take potential failure into account.
