WHAT THE FARK?

Not cool.

Someone had asked in a previous post what the Riverking rake was. My apologies for the delayed response. Here is the link:

And might as well post the house rules while I'm at it:

An interesting night yesterday as a player at the Riverking was going away for a few weeks. He has a pretty baller pad and offered it rent free to a friend of ours while he was gone. My friend had initially declined and that sparked an interesting discussion. The friend in question has been traveling for a while now playing poker and while he's not exactly the world's best player, the fact that he's survived until now is an indication that he's done relatively well. He was one of the first friends I made when I got to Cambodia three years ago and I've had a chance to see him grow and improve as a player. He's recently considered throwing in the towel as he's received pressure from family back home. But his reluctance is shown in the fact that he's already bought airline tickets twice or postponed his trip each time. I pushed hard for him to take the apartment and he eventually agreed. I didn't necessarily think that staying and continuing to play was the right decision, but my point was mainly that he needed to make any decision. His constant going back and forth on his mind wasn't doing anyone any favors. And had he gone home right now I expressed my belief that he was just going give false hope to his family before crushing them after deciding to come right back anyway. It would be more humane for him to just stay and clearly let them know of his intentions. And had he left and come back, he would have wasted a considerable amount of time and money while so the whole regretting not taking this apartment. When you're trying to grind out a living, you simply cannot afford such an opportunity to not have to pay rent for nearly a month.

After all things were decided we took our friend who was leaving for a farewell dinner at Sher-E-Punjab, one of our favorite Indian spots in town. We didn't hit the town too hard afterwards, but still managed to get around town a bit too a few different nightspots. We hit up Raqia again on 102 and I don't get why this place gets no love. The place has great drinks and food, a good atmosphere and the service is top notch. And yet we were literally the only ones in there. The night before they had to give away free bottles of Jack to nearly every party just to get customers in. Then we hit up Mango Mango, an upscale Khmer place in town with food, drinks and live music. Not a crazy night, but I was still trashed by the time I got home. Now time to get ready for work and head in in a couple of hours; I think our new poker table may have arrived.

Those curries look amazing.

RE: Raqia - me, Luke, his friend and another 2+2 Lurker went there the night they were handing out free bottles of JD to any group with more than a couple of girls (this is their standard ladies night on a Thursday AFAIK) and it still wasn't even at half capacity... I personally put it down to the location, there is absolutely nothing else on that street and it is not well lit at all.. I've been in PP for 2 and a half years and have now known 4 different business there which all lasted about 6 months at most despite each owner more adament than the previous that the would make it work... admittely this is the first place to try something other than a girly bar but I just don't see anyone getting the place rocking unless they really get the word out but it's still early days.

Just came back from breakfast with a friend at one of the baller spots in town called Khema. They have a breakfast buffet for $12 that's mostly eggs and pastries so they're obviously printing money. But still, everything they served was really good and the presentation was amazing. And if nothing else it's a nice break from the usual $1 pork and rice breakfast, which is also really good by the way.

Damn that Indian looks good. I'll have to check that out.

I need to come by and play soon. I have been working so hard on my business and new consulting gig here in PP. I have more stories and info I could share but I can't let my exploits get too crazy.

I ended up finding myself a new khmer girl and getting into new sorts of trouble. As I took home the other girls friend...yikes. Oh well, alls good for now. Will see what happens.

I got a pretty awesome pad close to RK at eastland hotel /east one apartments. 460$/month, internet, cable, gym and pool on the roof and eventually a skybar. I'd pay more and could definitely get a cheaper place, but I wanted to be super comfortable where I was and close to the things I like. I paid the extra cash and I'm happy with it because it suits my lifestyle with spending a lot of time in my place working. Then I can walk to most things I enjoy. + I'm on the 19th floor and have an awesome view.

No, PP isn't the cheapest in SE Asia but it does have its perks.

I hope to free up some time soon here to get back on the grind - missing poker. Dedicating too much time to this girl and building my biz atm.

Hi new to the thread..

I'm thinking of making a trip to phnom Penh in September with the intention of just grinding and chilling. Wonder if anyone has any experience with the live games etc (would wanna hang out) and just in general what the place is like for a young Euro traveling on their own.

The live games here are interesting to say the least. I've been here for three years and just about every friend I've made and still have has been on the felt. Makes for an interesting dynamic when we're all trying to take each other's money then go have a beer afterwards. But still we have great fun and there are places to both chill and also places to be a complete degenerate. Let me know when you're coming in and we'll definitely go out and knock down a few.

There's a great new place that opened up in the neighborhood called the Tropicana Lounge. It's a nice enough bar but what sets it apart is that they have karaoke without being a full on KTV. Hung out there last night with our new floor man, who's always good for a few laughs after throwing back a few.

Went out with some friends and players from the Riverking a while back, when one of them insisted on bringing his best friend. Looks totally safe.

RIP Cambo grinders.

Guess 3 month extensions seem to still be on the cards. though it's an extra $50 a year and no re-entries.

This changes very little in that three month extensions are still available without work permits and can be done repeatedly and indefinitely. The only caveat is that the visas will be single entry. So the process is a bit more frequent and will cost a bit more if you want to leave and come back. No one is going anywhere. And this is Cambodia. These work permits will be easier to get than my morning cup of coffee.

You could be right and time will tell but it feels like this is a real change visa wise here in Cambodia and they are trying to crack down on the amount of degen/bums here, a walk down 172/Riverside really is a sorry sight and you are almost approached by more broke foreigners with the usual stolen passport etc stories than begging locals.

RE: Work Permits - AFAIK from what I have read they are are a real pain to get now even WITH a job and a timely & costly process even with the correct documentation so what makes you think they'll be so easy to get given things are getting even stricter with no job at all for grinders/nomads? Money will always talk here but it just feels different this time, travel agents are refusing to hand out six month/year visas now which is simply something that's just unheard of here before.

Time till tell but I am glad I am jumping ship tbh, PP is truly a sh*hole and the last appealing thing about it was the fact you could get a years visa and come and go freely with no worries about being refused entry/being deported and a work permit didn't even have to cross your mind. If you take that away it's no different to say Thailand visa wise and places like BKK are 100x better places to live, imo.

I think the GTO approach now is probably six months Thailand, six months in Vietnam/Phils, mixing it up like people like jspill have covered in the Thailand thread.

I think you're right about this. There's also a "visa war" brewing between the US and Cambodia. I was reading about how Cambodia is one of the few countries that will not take back their people after being caught illegally in the US (only one of 3 countries that refuses). This is causing the US to change visa/immigration laws for Cambodia and it's expected that Cambodia will reply in kind.

It's been pretty busy lately in the room with high season just around the corner. We have some players set to return soon so we've added an additional table to the room. The Sunday tourney is picking up as we had to use every table in the room the other week. We're thinking of expanding our tourney schedule and are starting off with a Omaha event tomorrow on Friday night. We showed the McGregor fight in the room and did a pool type promotion for it. The fight was on really early here so I'm surprised so many showed up. The funny thing about the fight was that I was stressing all week about showing it because I had to procure the streaming source and set everything up in terms of being able to display it on all four televisions. So I installed Kodi on my laptop, bought splitter and cables and did a lot of research on what add-on would provide the best stream. So of course when I walked into the Riverking at 7:00 AM to set everything up, one of the servers came up to me and told me that it was being pirated and shown for free by a local station. Whatever, I was just happy it went off without a glitch. Hold'em has been going later into the night as the small Omaha game has petered out a bit and the big Omaha game is still the ridiculous game it's always been. Naga still has their $1-$2 game, although we've managed to get more players to play at least the early part of the evening in our room. I'll update more going forward as my schedule should lighten with the new floor man now up to speed on everything.
