Just came across this in the Cambodian subreddit:

https://www.cambodiadaily.com/news/c...region-106639/

Anyone know how to say "duh" in Khmer?

Please tell me which country this doesn't apply?

No doubt the US is corrupt but they won't try to send you to jail here for running against the president and almost winning. Nor do leaders who lose in elections refuse to leave office, get away with it and basically get to stay. Obviously every country is corrupt to a degree but some crazy sh*t does happen in third world countries and Cambodia is a prime example.

Wow, you do know about the congress in US?

The in-your-face corruption is just so much more honest, being transparent and all, that its easy to adapt to it, maybe even accept it. Can't say the same from the western countries where everything is done behind the curtains.

I agree with you that generally speaking there is a lot more "behind the scenes" corruption in the U.S. But I've lived in the States for nearly 35 years and no matter who was the president, my congressman or whatever law was passed (secret or otherwise), there isn't a single morning I wasn't able to get up and pretty much do, say or go wherever I wanted. I guess you wouldn't be able to say that if you are/were the likes of a Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden or Aaron Swartz. But that's not me nor most Americans, and it's probably not you either. Generally speaking Americans have a persecution complex as to how much injustice and/or corruption exist in their lives. And Cambodia is not North Korea; most know exactly who Hun Sen is and what his rule has been like. I can't speak for you, but I wouldn't be able to say to my girlfriend with a straight face that I have faced as much corruption in my life as an American as she has as a Cambodian.

Yeah, you're right. I just meant that corruption is everywhere. In Asia its different in a way, where something you say can land you to a jail.

1) If you want to play PLO, your only choice is the $1-$2-$4 and $5-$10 PLO game at the River King in Phnom Penh
2) Haven't been to Bangkok
3) When you arrive be sure to get a business visa, also known as an E-Visa. Do not get a tourist visa. All visas are initially for 1 month. But before the 1st month is finished, you can renew a business visa for another year for $300.
4) http://www.khmer24.com/c-apartment-for-rent.html
For that amount, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a nice place
5) According to a previous post, Opennet seems to be working well in some areas. If you can't get long term internet, then get a USB dongle from Smartcard. I've had friends use them report positive things. But keep in mind the last time I checked they were only Windows 7 compatible. If you're using Mac, Windows 8 or 10 you're out of luck.

You can use any smartphone to tether your sim to use internet, no reason to buy a dongle.

I forgot about that. I seem to have a lot of friends who never bring their smartphone and always only use those Nokia candybar phones when in Cambodia.

can u give me some details about this business visa? i am going there with a thai gf, will she also be able to get it? is there a way to extend it for less than a year? why is tourist visa not good?

Tourist visa can't extand. Business visa can extend 1 month up to 1 year.

I don't see why your thai gf wouldn't be able to do it.

Getting a business visa is as easy as checking a box on the form. It requires no documentation nor verification and can be renewed from 1 month up to 1 year. Just make sure at the airport that in fact they gave you a business visa. Since all visas at the airport are initially for 1 month, it can be hard to tell whether or not you have the right one. After that, they can be renewed at any travel agency in town. Tourist visas can only be renewed for 1 month and there is a cap on how long it can be renewed. I don't know for certain, but I don't see why all this wouldn't apply for your girlfriend.

When I flew with Thai Airways from BKK they asked me for return ticket, but I guess it just depend of your carrier. Immigration/visa dont care.

Hi guys!

My girlfriend and me are planning to move to cheap country, with beach and quiet (better if isnt full of tourist). So one of this options is Cambodia.

How are your experience there? Do you guys recommend Sihanoukville?

How much is the cost of the life? With a small apartament (near to the beach), a good internet and beers we hare happy

Thank so much!

Internet is decent enough in most of the "bigger" city's (Siem Reap/PP/Sihanoukville). Just don't bother w/ online poker let alone MTTs while in rural Cambodia..

I'd be surprised if your girlfriend would be excited to stay in Sihanoukville long-term. It's def not your typical beautiful relaxed beach town (its not beautiful nor "relaxed"), even though I like it quite a lot.

You might want to check out Kampot/Kep. I'd imagine it can get old after a while but the landscape is amazing, it's not too touristy (yet) and there's a ton to see esp. if you're into rock-climbing/caving or just generally exploring stuff.

I don't get why everyone stays in/recommends Phnom Penh, literally the bootom end of citys I 'd want to live in Cambodia. Esp when low cost of living seems to be such a determining factor ITT as well people having issues wrt safety.. Just move your white privileged asses back to Bangkok when you constantly "ZOMG I don't feel safe"^^

Anyway, south/central Vietnam might be better options for you. Can Tho/Vung Tau but esp. Da Nang or Nha Trang. Vietnam is highly underrated!

I can't speak firsthand, but in my research before I moved it seemed that the internet in Sihanoukville was less stable and also more expensive if you consider things on a unit basis of Mbps. Perhaps it would serve your well to visit these areas before you decide. While the thought of living in a beach city is certainly attractive enough, there are unique elements to living in Sihanoukville that one should experience first before deciding to live there.
