Are you talking about them asking if you wanted the girl? It sounds like they were trying to set you up to get laid. That is pretty standard. You have to trust your instincts and street smarts

I am wondering where you were because the beach the description of the 2 most popular bars for backpackers in sihounikville and the beach there is pretty safe there imo, especially to the right there are is a line of hotels, there may not be much sand but tons of places to sit safely in front of establishments if you are that worried

Was it at the end of this road (to the left is beach and to the right are a couple popular bars). There is also a small pier

at end if you look left

halfway through coming up to say holy hell is this long but seriously what a day

so the bus ride, i get on and im the only person on the bus with a few guys who are working, they picked me up at my hotel, mind you im paranoid about this hotel (and whole city) and have heard stories of people getting jacked and left in the middle of nowhere, being the only guy on........ then they drop me at the bus station to get on the actual bus with other people

finally see white people, sit next to a 25ish year old from LA, he has been traveling asia and australia for 3 months, been all over (said vietnam was the roughest he had been, i asked him if PP intimidated him as much as it did me and he said its nothing compared to there) he is heading to china next then india, just blowing his savings he said.... was fun to chat to and made me feel a lil better

bus is hot as balls, shirt soaked the entire way, i overpaid $9 since booked through my hotel, really charge of $6, but hey they picked me up and i had 2 big bags that i couldnt have got to the bus station on the back of a motorcycle, fwiw thats how u get around on here, just hop on the back of some dudes bike for a dollar, the sheer number of bikes in PP added to my being scared of the place

the ride went pretty quick, didnt even put the headphones on just looked at the scenery, dont get me wrong 5 hours or so is a heck of a long time, but i thought it would be worse, still if you have money and or are in a group get a cab, cut the time in half and dont sweat the whole way

so get in and so excited to be off the bus i get off and get my big suitcase out from underneath and go get a tuk tuk, im getting into the tuk tuk when i realize i just made MAJOR TRAVEL NOOB MISTAKE #1, i left my backpack on the bus, it should be mentioned that i had 3 things of value with me, money in my wallet, money in a flashlight in my other pocket, and my lap top that is..... you guessed it in my backpack, i run back and get on the bus and its gone

i get off and start scanning everyone looking for someone with my backpack, the dudes from the bus company can tell im freaking out which i totally am and their like lost luggage? i say yes and they start to look around, its gone

so i get back on the bus and check again, the driver had found it and moved it behind his chair (not hid it, when i got on the 2nd time i clearly saw it)

omg omg omg omg omg thank god, but somehow thats only the 2nd dumbest thing i did today

so then i go to charlie harpers, my entire plans for this city, all i know is go to charlie harpers, so thats what i do

i get to his place and i get shown a room, first off his bar seems nice and laid back, open air, should be mentioned that the power is off in sihinouk at the time but i dont even realize it cuz they have the generator on (more on this later)

theres a poker game going, a couple guys around the bar, the main man tony is back behind the bar i ask to speak to him, tell him im me and he says ok and has a kid show me my room, this is where all ish starts to fall apart

i am an EXTREMELY light sleeper, probably mentioned somewhere in the PI thread, but at any place ive lived the past 10 years the first thing i do when moving in is black out the windows, and i ALWAYS have a fan on to drowned out noise, so i go into the room he has one with a balcony for me but i instantly tell this is just not somewhere i can live because way to much light will be getting in, and its on the street side so noisy (though now that im here at night i realize noise at night wont be an issue there isnt the constant honking there is in the day)

so i ask what other rooms and he says 3rd floor has one but no balcony, im like great lets check it out, has the biggest window ive ever seen, this thing would be quite a task to black out, not even sure its possible.......

sigh

again nothing at all against his place, if i was just a normal friggin person that could fall asleep there would be no problems, but i aint, so......... cant really get into it on here about how great a guy tony is, but lets just say that he is still gonna help me with the main reason i came here even though im not gonna take a room, he seems like he would be a great landlord and if you had a problem he would do what he could to help fix it, so ya guys just cuz i cant sleep there that doesnt mean you cant and i would highly recommend you make his place your first stop, say hello to him, he is very knowledgeable on the area and runs a forum for the place

so anyways now to the rat, i go down the street and check into a place for $13 a night, didnt seem all that nice but as ive said many times i dont need nice, i just want to get my bags in a room and take a friggin shower, so i go into the shower and its only a cold shower, but it may have been the best (solo) shower ive ever had, 5 hours drenched in your own sweat on the bus, cold water couldnt have been better

get out the lap top to email the moms and let her know im here, start to look around the sihinouk forum to find another place, o ya i forgot that when i got to the new place thats when i found out power was out so i go around to see who has generator running, the dump i go to obv didnt, guy said the same thing as most people, they only run it if they have enough people staying, which at the time it seems most dont, he said the same $150 a month for his place as charlies but charlies is much much nicer, got another quote of 250 for decent place, another quote of 400 for a $15 a night place so they barely gave a break (thats where im at now its pretty nice and wifi is 4/4 which is great to see thats possible here, wifi at the dump was 2/4 at best but didnt go out in my 1 hour)

i cant believe how long this already is and im like halfway through, what a friggin day wow

so where was i, ummm ya another GREAT thing about charlies is he always has the generator going, that means i really have 3 options, overpay to find a "nice" place that also does the same, get a place as close to charlies and when power goes out which it does often put the laptop in the backpack and head over to his place and buy some drinks or food or something, or C figure out how to black out the massive window, not sure what im gonna do yet, i hate when plans dont work out but u gotta do........ so anyways to the rat again

so lookin through the forums on sihanouk when i see out of the corner of my eye and hear either a small to medium size rat or an oversize mouse run into the room and go behind a dresser, i start making noises to scare it hoping it will run out but it doesnt, hmmmm what to do, not much i can do i just think well im not staying here past tonight but ill be fine on the bed, 10 minutes or so goes by, ive got pillows against the back of the bed/wall and am leaning up against them when out of nowhere the thing runs up the side of the bed and goes inbetween the pillows, i scream louder than i can ever remember screaming out of shock, it wasnt exactly like a lil girl cuz it wasnt high pitched, it was a full out grown man scream out of horror

i jump out of the bed and he goes back down and hides, i instantly throw all my stuff (sweat soaked clothes included) into beds go ask for some of my money back (get $5 of $13 back thats all i asked for just wanted to move on with my life) and head across the street, find a nice place for $15 a night ($400 a month), i am so freaked out at this point, i mean and im sorry to use this term but its the only thing i can think of but im like a rape victim if anyone would have come near me i..... so i get into my room and its next door to a karaoke place and extremely loud, FML really i go ask for a room on other side of the hall and they give me one

i check for rats, rat poop, rat hair, dont find anything so all is good, look and see that the door goes almost all the way to the ground, no rats sneaking under that

o fwiw in these open air bars there are lizards just crawling on the walls and the people from here ignore them

so now its like 9pm, i wanna see what the town is like, i go down and walk out the door, fwiw this place is cambo owned and basically the whole family works here and runs it, and its a big family lol (i assume they are all family, seems like safe assumption) not sure why i point that out but anyways i walk out and one of the 30ish year old guys is like where u gonna go im like i dunno just gonna wander the streets cuz thats what i do (genius) so i ask where the bars are he says 4km that way im lik hmm thats quite a walk, i ask is this place girl friendly he says ya no problem, one of his friends (or maybe another brother) offers to give me ride for $2 im like ok (think he overcharged by a dollar tbh but whatevs) and i get dropped off in the middle of some bar district by a beach

im still freaked out by cambo and now im alone not knowing a damn clue about anything (genius) so i just start wondering, i see white females walking alone and kids out, this should make me feel better, im still scared out of my mind, just completely freaked out, the rat certainly didnt help, so i walk past what might have been a girly bar im not sure there were like 5 girls sitting around a table they yelled at me asked me to come in no one else there..... but naw wtf would i wanna go hang out with 5 girls lets keep roaming aimlessly (genius) so walk down 1 road then back up it after i hit the end that was the ocean, bars to my right, bunch of people including some kids with parents going to the left, ive been warned about the beaches at night so i turn around and head back, go down another street only because i see a white girl walk that way alone (sorry no creeper pic peoples) so i think its gotta be safe, get some food from quite a hot lady she says itll be ready in 5 minutes so i wander further, there are 5 tuktuks and now for the 2nd time a guy offers me weed, i say no thanks he says good skunk so im like let me see, its decent looking outdoor midgrade, im as picky as it gets wouldnt smoke it in the states but over here itll do, but im still paranoid so i dont get it, he says 20 for the bag seems high for this place but i dunno decent size bag probably over a halfz and really i doubt ill see much better around (hard to say that for the first one i see, but really i think it was like medicinal grade over here) so i say hmm not now but maybe later with no real plans of getting it, but for some reason i feel the guy is legit im like so where are the girls around here hes like i can take u and im thinkin girly bar so im like well let me think about it i ordered some food ill comeback by but if u get another customer just give him a ride

so i go eat, a small german shephard comes up and stares at me begging for food, the daughter of the hot lady (who was probably 15ish, sorry no creeper pic again peoples) sits at table a lil ways away and is texting, i know of all things over here dont even let anyone think ur tryin with a minor but im dumb so im like hey is this your dog she says yes i ask can i give the bone from my ribs she says ya, i ask what kind of dog she has no clue what i say, im like i think german shephard again no clue, im like how old she says 1 (i woulda guessed maybe 6 months, obv undernourished if that small at 1, but not grossly skinny) holy hell im rambling

anyways so i finish up and head back down, my buddy the tuktuk/moto driver who i know are the main people not to trust is ready for me on his bike, i get on and he says ok i take you there (genius)......

so i cant go any further on the public forums, if u want the rest u can pm me and if im confident you arent someone i know in the poker community back home i will reply, otherwise i cant have this out there sorry, and if u post what i send u will be cutoff from future things that are to bad for me to put out on the forums

ooooooo so happy to be alive and not scammed

somehow that was by far the longest post ive ever made and im not even putting in the shenanigans

justice not gonna 100% say yes thats it, but it looks close (of course most beach roads probably look similar)

but there was a nice hotel on the right side just like there, and a pier (if you can call that a pier) in the same spot, and off directly to the right there was a bar

i was far to deathly afraid at that point to peak my head out and look left even though people were walking that way with their kids

walked around figuring some stuff out, got some options, one bank needs me to have a 6 month visa, another just needs passport, proof of address, and $10, and the one that is the most popular in cambo (acleda) said i needed to bring in a passport and some sort of card i needed to go get but not the visa

was quite funny cuz the guy was like you sleep on it tonight because if you sign up for bank and either cancel account in less than 3 months or you dont have any transactions for a year there is a $5 fee and he was totally dead serious about how horrible that would be

trying to get the place im at now to let me stay a month for $250, its real close to charlies where power is always on, seems safe, the nicest rooms ive been in yet

costs for things are weird here, rent couldnt be any cheaper, same with hotels, but food is not that cheap, just ate the big breakfast at charlies for $5, i think its one of the few $5 options that are the most expensive on the menu, dont get me wrong its very big and was quite good i didnt finish it, its just youd expect in a place this cheap that food would be $2 or less, not much street food around either

last night charlies had the $1-$2 cash game going, max rake of a quarter and it goes to the dealer, only weird thing is the buy in is $20-$50........ dont wanna walk in like i own the place and try to get things changed, i just dont understand that

also they have a $10+1 (for the dealer again) with rebuys tourney tomorrow night, probably gonna play just to splash around and check out the structure

definitely seems like a cool place to hang out though

getting quite bored waiting for stars to email me back

o ya looked into some computer chairs at a couple of different places, more expensive than in the states, cheapest one at either spot was $40, the standard leather one i got at target for $50 in vegas 6 years ago was over $100 i think maybe even $150, and this is on the street, i dunno what i could get it down to if i haggle

found an apt for $100 that is decent enough but i gotta pay electric and water, they said would be less than $200 total

couple others for $220 and $250 a month total, when i say apt i mean hotel room for a month, when u walk into the cambo owned ones and ask for a monthly rate 1 of 2 things happen, either you never get an answer and walk out, or they go and get the youngest person around and then that person translates, quite funny

one of the 15ish year old girls who was showing me a place told me how pretty i was (again peoples sorry no creeper pic)

ummm thats about it for now, gonna meet up with driver from yesterday and have him take me to some of the higher end places just to see what their monthly is and how nice they are

and got another place to check out with options ranging from $125-$175 that ive been told is decent

o ya (holy hell a lot has happened in the last 2 days, in vegas this would be 6 months of doing stuff for me if not more) one lady said $15 a night and wrote down 20 when trying to tell me how much, then for monthly she said $540, lol great price break there

and i forgot to put this a few times now cuz **** keeps happening but when i got to that hotel in PP all i had was a $100 bill on me so i gave it to them and the guy just hands it to another guy who walks very fastly out the door with it and down the street, he came back with the change but i was a lil concerned for a bit, they didnt say anything just handed it and he was right out the door

im pretty sure thats every single thing thats on my mind

I think you should try to figure out a way to make Charlie Harper's work. What about wearing a sleeping mask to cover your eyes or something. They are so good about getting the generator up quickly that you don't need to waste money on that back up power device if you are using a laptop. I have a feeling that Cambodia is turning out to be more expensive than you were planning.

I've mentioned it ITT before, but Acleda does not allow you to deposit to gambling sites, including Moneybookers. You should find out if the other banks have a similar policy before committing. I hope you have a back up plan if they do.

You said that you'd been warned to stay away from the beaches at night, but it was by somebody ITT who has never even been to Cambodia. Relax. There is nothing to worry about. There are bars and restaurants everywhere. It could even be the safest place in the city to be after dark.

I'd recommend checking out Otres beach for some places to stay. You'll be able to find someplace as cheap as CH and with better cheap food options.

And finally, you've already mentioned teenage girls twice in the two days you've been there. Don't think that the rules about them change just because you are in Cambodia. You'll be able to find plenty of girls who wouldn't be a felony. Stick to them.

It's been a good read so far. I'm looking forward to more.

From what I understand buy-ins for $1/$2 are this bad in California as well, and that's in the U.S.

I know in PP there is a good $1/$2 game, one that buys in deep, but of course you're not in PP, are then any deeper buy in games in SK, or is the only game in this Charlies place?

other things to say but this is the only important one

i cant help that the girl today was around that age and called me pretty, i only shared it because i thought her saying a guy was pretty was funny

the one yesterday i thought the dog was cute and wanted to give it a bone, it had zero to do with the girl

just have to make that clear, i can joke around about a lot of stuff, but thats a soar subject with me so dont take those comments out of context plz

my goal is to have this thread catch up to the thailand thread by thanksgiving, i kid i kid (maybe after my recent post i should say i joke i joke)

sleeping masks dont work, i hate so many things about myself but how hard it is to fall asleep is right at the top of the list, something like that touching my face is enough.... sigh

cambo is a lil more expensive, but it was so damn cheap to begin with, still gonna be cheaper than anywhere else

if i can get this place to go for 250, or another all im gonna have to buy is the $60 generator and a $40 comp chair, $100 move in costs aint no thang, i think its worth it because if power goes out for 2 hours even if the laptop is working ill need a fan at the least

actually the warning came from the guy at charlies when i asked him what areas might be unsafe, only one he mentioned was ochetel or whatever its called beach at night, im not familiar with the area so all of the beaches scare me and the sound of the waves crashing (and the rat) didnt help last night

will check out otres thanks for the suggestion, any more are very welcome

do you know if the banks could fund entropay? can US banks fund entropay?

could potentially be up and running in 2 days

what would a competent player have as an expected win rate per $4.40 180 man?

more humid than bangkok, about the same as PI, all 3 very hot hard to say which is worse

you hit on it with the breeze though, obv it didnt help on the bus, but walking around it makes things a lil more tolerable here

I am pretty certain it is. Not the bar on the corner but the one next to it is super popular til like 2am or something then everybody goes to JJ's a few minute walk inland. Or maybe that bar is called JJ's and everybody goes to utopia, I don't remember for sure. That area is chill, it is where I recommend staying if you are not going to stay at Charlies. Check out Monkey Republic, that is a good place with wifi and where a lot of people hang out before going to the bars. There are tons of other guest houses on that street and the streets around there too. It is good location.

You won't be able to use Entropay with a US bank account. I'm not sure about the Cambodian banks. I'm really curious to hear how this goes in the next few days. How much would it suck to have PS ready to go with no way to fund it.

If you're willing to pay $250 I think you should consider looking for a proper apartment. You should be able to find a furnished place in that price range.

yes justice that is the one, and lol @ me for being scared to go walk down there last night, i went there tonight and it was awesome, $3 barbecue everywhere, and i have a serious wind fetish (non sexual fetish) and the ocean breeze gave me wood (in a non sexual way)

cant wait to go smoke something and head down there and just lay back on a chair in that breeze, gonna be a great way to unwind after a long day of online poker

saw the jjs bar (obv not the same place as i mentioned in the pm both named jjs though)

went to look at quite a few apts tonight, saw all sorts of areas, checked into the casino inbetween charlies and the beach and no poker

the first place i went to (rainbow guesthouse) has rooms for $100, $150, and $175 a month, any of which could easily be lived in, the $150 one is actually 3 rooms (1 bedroom 2 living spaces, actually really nice furniture which i was surprised to see 2 leather chairs and a leather loveseat) you gotta pay electric yourself its basically an apt, only problem is its down a sketchy street, cant be that bad of a street cuz kids playing all over, just that its totally locals around, i dunno im pretty sure you would be fine there, has a big gate, just a tad sketchy, o ya and there was atleast 1 but maybe 2 prostitutes on the street sitting on couches and when we drove past the 1 she thought i was getting dropped off there and looked all excited, so i told the dude to stop and i went in and came out 20 minutes later (JOKING, no really i didnt do it)

starting to think thats just the norm down any of these streets

so then had him bring me to monkey republic, first we drove past and he wanted me to check out some bungalows, but wifi not in rooms just in restaurant, dirt cheap though $5 a night so if u ever wanna get away from it all for a night or pick up a girl at a bar its nice to have that option

then i walked back up to monkey and checked places in between, (didnt realize monkey had rooms as well so didnt ask them but will tomorrow, thought it was just a bar) so there are 2 places directly across from it, one would be $315 for a month, seemed pretty nice, great very safe location (right in the main bar district and 3 minute walk to the beach for those who dont know) i think id rather do that then live in the bigger place in the sketchy area tbh, dont have to pay for electric and they use the generator right as it goes out cuz they always have guests so thats a big plus, twice what charlies costs but its still cheap as hell and better location

the one next door the guy originally says $150 for a month (which would be amazing)

i need to stop and add that basically every room in all of these places is the same, just a standard hotel room, small and nothing fancy, except the place on the sketchy street (rainbow guesthouse fwiw)

so i forget to ask if the wifi is in the rooms also or just in the bar at the $150 a month room, and so i walk back up and its really dark out and even darker here cuz covered area and he's just turned out the lights, and i dont even notice it i guess it just looked like blacktop or dirt or something but, kinda hard to explain but basically there are some lil pools next to the walkways and being so dark i couldnt tell they were water and i walked right into one (genius)

so my leg is extremely cut up with 3rd world rancid water all over the cut, i mean in the states i wouldnt go to the dr for something like this though its probably worse than u imagine, but out here i am freaked the F out, get my moto buddy to take me by a pharmacy buy a first aid kit and antibiotic cream and go play doctor, put the dressing on wrong forgot to put the gauze between the big cotton thing and the cut so it gets stuck to the wound, holy hell havent been seriously injured in 4.5 years and when it finally happens im in a country that is notorious for having completely awful health care

anyone with a brain would call it a night at this point but i go back out, dude just drives me around the area mostly around the beach, check into a couple other spots dont find anything im really interested in, actually thats not true later run across one thats a bungalow directly on the beach with wifi in the room, its $10 a night but they arent sure what the price would be for monthly so have to check tomorrow, pretty sure im just gonna end up at the place where i ****ed up my leg, its a 3 minute walk to the beach and right in the center of the bar district

have buddy drop me off at the beach to meet up with him in an hour, get some bbq for $3 (thats the standard price, u get whatever meat/fish you want grilled plus fries and a salad (basically cole slaw) and then tonight bread was included, fish was pretty good not great, no bones though so thats nice

anyways meet back up with him and call it a night, no shenanigans, i buy the 20 from him get back to my room and check it out its ayt, not really in the states id give it to a homeless person or something, but over here itll have to do, smells like mexican shwag, like exactly bricked shwag but its not bricked

found a safe hiding spot outside of my room and hid the ish incase was a set up, got it 2 hours ago and no knock on the door yet, was trying to hide the place i was staying for him to lower the risk of gettin scammed but had to have him drop me right out front so i could get in and wash the nasty water off my leg ASAP

saw people smokin j's at the beach, 15 year old kid who sold me food (OMG i mentioned a 15 year old again im a sicko) offered me green, shrooms, or coke

i 100% only use bongs or bubblers and those are gonna be impossible to find over here, i really wish i woulda brought a brand new clean glass bowl with me so i could macguyver some ish up but i didnt wanna fly with it even though im sure woulda been no problem, guess ill have to switch to joints, if anyone comes over here and wants to bring me a glass bowl ill give you a huge hug (nonsexual)

so scared and paranoid about my leg, 2 hour taxi and 2 hour flight that id have to overpay for on short notice to get decent care in thailand would make me cry

got into more crazy stuff in a week and a half here in asia than i did in 6 years in vegas

karaoke bar just blaring still at midnight, hope it stops soon, this hotel is clean and nice but im sure it does zero repeat business

Exactly. To the left all the restaurants have $3 bbq, 50 cent beers and free wifi on the beach. It's a good place

This trip report is boring. I'm looking for a room. I'm saving money. I'm looking for a room. I'm saving money.

I found some old photos from my last trip to Phnon Penh. Maybe this will add some color.

She really enjoyed shooting pool.

Riverside cafe, decent but spicy food.

Hotel had HBO with Cambo subtitles. The Cambodian alphabet is like 88 letters.

The bathroom was strange. I had some kind of bath tub in it. Its so annoying. Who takes bathes. There was a mirror.

OH and here is a girl I banged twice a day everyday. She was lovely and her family was so kind and sweet. I was very satisfied with her that I didn't even butterfly. She was like my girlfriend. My fixer/trike drive spoke good English too.
I got a 3 month visa for Cambo while I was in Manila, so I might head back there, but that means giving up my beachside condo here in Busan. Decisions Decisions.

She was really into shooting pool. I'm telling you.
