heading over to cambo this weekend, not much info on the place at all, OP of this thread disappeared shortly after creating it, lets see how this plays out

is shinouk the type of place that always has hotels open or should i book one ahead of time? from the sounds of it i will likely be able to just stay at charlie harpers my first night, but i cant think of many worse things than getting over there and finding out everything is booked........

There are lots of hotels there. I traveled Asia for 20 months and can't think of even once where booked anything before arriving, never had a problem.

Thai islands during high season are only place I can think of off top of my head where it could be a problem but I went during rainy season and never to full moon party so wasn't an issue for me.

Some breaking news.

The PokerKing club in Macau will be opening a room at the Las Vegas Sun casino in Bavet, Cambodia(at the Vietnam border). Currently in the early stages of training dealers etc. They are targeting to open by mid-sep.

Also the Asia Poker tour will announce a APT Cambodia tournament in November as well.

Poker in the region about to boom i think.

depends on if the phone i end up getting has a camera on it or not as for some reason i cant figure out how to get the camera on my laptop to work, i mean i assume this lil glass optical dot thingy above my screen is a camera, no clue what else it could be, but when i open up "dell webcam central" it says no supported webcam present or something like that, and im comp ******ed so im confused

but ive only been eating the highest quality bananas for the past 10 years, definitely consider myself a connoseur (to lazy to look up correct spelling) so even if i dont get pics ill give ya an accurate description of the quality

lifes kinda hectic at the moment so if i havent given an update by a month from now remind me

anyone have any experience with luckbox888??? my spidy senses are tingling telling me that he may be one of those guys that ive been warned might be a rip off artist on this site

i could be way off, and maybe he is just a really nice guy offering to help, but back when i initially said i was moving to PI and was askin about green stuff he offered to help, and now he is saying he can help me out in cambodia......... even from his initial message months ago it seemed fishy for some reason but now add that he can help me out with a cheap place to stay in cambo also...........

K2D - You really ought to update this thread regularly for at least the first few weeks once you get to Cambodia. It'd be really useful for other people who may want to move here in the future. I think that what you are going to experience is that many of the things you have been worrying about will be no problem, things like finding a hotel or bananas, and that things you didn't know to worry about will pop up, and you will have to find creative solutions to them.

You have mentioned Charlie Harper's as a place you may stay for a while, but you are going to need an address if you are going to be opening a bank account or registering/reopening a PS account or any other site you may want to play on. Apartments are cheap and if you are going to stay for 3 months or more you may want to get one.

Don't stress over anything poker related as soon as you arrive. If you haven't traveled before, you are going to be experiencing a pretty big culture shock. Settle in, look around, and start talking to people you meet. Helpful locals and expats will have answers to all the questions you've had. After a week, you''ll look back on how ignorant you were about Cambodia even though you tried to prepare yourself by doing countless hours of research back home. Don't rush into anything because after just a short time, you will have a much more realistic idea of what your expectations should be.

GL. You're about to start a pretty awesome adventure. I hope you keep us updated.

Great post Yank - just read through the whole thread and that's about the best advice I've seen given. Would like to add a couple of tips -

Like Yank said, just settle in at first, moving countries is just tilt waiting to happen - plus it's a really good idea to get out there when you first get there rather than getting into the grind. There's a lot to enjoy and it all being new is just awesome.

Learn to tune out - you'll have hassle everywhere, it's just standard and it's fine to just ignore. Not ignoring it is essentially saying 'I haven't been here long enough to get tired of you asking' so they'll keep asking til you ignore it.

Don't fight against the annoyances, work around it - that's probably the biggest problem I've seen people have when they get here, shift your focus to what's good.

You sound like your head's screwed on straight and you've got a healthy level of suspicion, and it's not a bad idea reading up on the place, but just remember the negative voices are often louder, the positive ones are busy enjoying themselves.

You're a lot better off looking for a place to stay long term once you're on the ground - luckbox's condescending 'are you for real' just reeks of 'i'm not for real' to me, but regardless you're better off getting a feel for where you want to be and seeing anywhere you might live first.

Have a good one!

exactly about luckbox, i feel he is trying to provoke me to meet up with him to "prove im real" i really truly just feel the dude is one of the scammers, maybe not the same ones that drugged the dude in thailand, but it seems like he has the same intentions, just a gut feeling but its pretty strong

lol @ me having my head on straight btw, like really really LOL @ that, but you were part right i am naturally very suspicious and untrusting

im already used to the hassle from being in PI for a week, i treat it the same way i treated the beggars in las vegas, head down, say no, keep moving

good posts by both you and yank, now to yank -

ya i plan to update whats going on, there really is so little info out there on cambo that someone needs to provide something, hopefully i dont just disappear like the OP of this thread, if i do that should be a strong sign not to come here

ive been in contact with stars about the situation, they said i need to show some sort of bill, i told them that the only bill i can get is electric and that im not sure if i will just settle up with the hotel or not, they then said they could call me on a landline or i could get a phone put in, im not sure if that meant they could call me at the hotel reception or have transferred to room, or if i HAVE to get a landline put in, their response was vague to that question

so i emailed charlies about asking if i could get a landline put in, this was maybe 4 or 5 days ago, and he hasnt responded yet, i dont see why he would have a problem with it, but if he does i guess then ill have to look for another place, from what ive been told his place is right in the middle of the tourist district directly across from where the bus drops you off, sounds like a pretty safe area to me, but who knows ill have to see it

apts may be cheap but the ease of charlies being $150 a month with no lease to sign...... cant imagine the apts would be to much cheaper furnished, who knows though maybe, i can always look around since i dont have a lease

i can tolerate a whole lot of BS, and really just wanna get back to the online grind and be the F away from people, ive said it 100 times in teh ph thread and no one believes it but 95%+ of my life is gonna be spent in my room either playing online or playing with a....... heck more like 98%, i dont like going out or partying or sitting on the beach or anything really, i just hope sihinouk is closer to the good stuff ive heard then the bad, gonna have to see for myself

really need online poker back cuz i am spending waaaaaaaaaaay to much time on forums right about now lol

Fair enough but you'll feel right at home if you do get out - the SE asia expat community is one big loony bin. The place has helped me dig myself out of bad headspaces a couple of times, so consider giving it a go.

In retrospect, I would stay at the "Lux" across the street from the Red Fox. When I flew in, my immediate cash was tight - 8 buy ins, so i took the sub - $100 per week room (which was fine) at the fox with an in-house banana vending system and in-house micro stakes PLO games running till 6am 3 days / week. A nice stoney post-Naga game.

Lucky for me, I played patient and ran like god and, thus, crushed the game at Naga - but I was too lazy to move even when I was strolling the riverfront with 7k in my pocket.

Exactly this and I consider myself lucky even though I am a very large man - we are all the same size against many weapons. Also, according to locals I spoke with, there are TONS of military grade guns / weapons in public circulation leftover from the khymer rouge military conflict.

Got a great job in the states now but, darn, grinding a few hours online during the day and live at night in Cambodia and vacationing in Vietnam and Thailand is sounding better and better as a life option.

I also stayed at Lux, the only reason I say this is caus Red Fox imo is a hangout, place to smoke more so than a place to stay. I wouldnt feel comfortable holding large amounts of cash there.

like 5ish hours, really short flight, just hoping i can get on the bus to sihinouk today to get all this travel over

and even more hopeful that i feel safe there and that the internet is good so i can have like $500 a month total expenses on necessities and build up a role before getting back to PI, or better yet find cambo to be even better than PI but i know thats not gonna happen

You don't need to have a landline in your name. They just need to call you on a Cambodian #. The reception of the hotel is fine, however, I wouldnt tell stars I am staying at a hotel. They may accept it but you are trying to prove residence.
