I left Naga every night for 3 weeks (about 15 months ago) with between 1.5k and 7k usd and jumped in a tuk tuk back to the red fox. In retrospect, I was completely stupid to do so.

I would say you were stupid to stay at Red Fox is you could afford anything better.

The nice hotel across the road for around $30 a night

For $30 a night you can stay at Naga

Personally, I'd never pay that much for a room in Cambodia. Can find a clean bed with hot water and free wifi for a lot less in the same location

so justice any recommended hotels for cheaper close to naga in a semi safe spot?

Nothing specific, the area around Red Fox is probably where you want to stay, there are tons of options there and on the parallel streets. It's near the river and full of bars, restaurants, cafes etc. The problem isn't the hotel being in a safe spot, the dangerous part is being a target when you leave Naga World in the middle of the night and hop in a tuktuk/motobike/taxi. Staying at Naga would be the safest option if playing poker.

I didn't stay at Red Fox but I've been there several times. I stayed somewhere for $6 a night with private bathroom and wifi. I forget the name and wouldn't recommend it because even though it was walking distance from Naga I had to take motobikes to go anywhere else which isn't a huge issue but may as well stay elsewhere. Was really really nice place with great courtyard and most the rooms were like $20 there, mine was only one for that price. Another place I don't recall the name either but my friend stayed at a hostel near Naga which is where I'd have stayed if I saw it earlier, was full of travelers, huge menu and super cheap food. My friend was paying 6 or 8 for a private room there, forget. I could probably find it if I look, I know where it is on a map and may recognize name. Have same issue there of having to take a motobike to the bars but traveling alone it would be my pick of the places I saw because I would have met a lot of people (If you are looking to meet travelers I can google it, see if I find it, is a short walk to Naga)

But yeah, best option is to go to Redfox and walk around that area checking out rooms IMO. It's good location. Sometimes a place looks like crap and they want $20 for a room and sometimes it is a nice place and they ask for $8. You don't necessarily get what you pay for. Shop around in person

From a PM to k2d, referring to Charlie Harpers and Sinkoukville, someone else might find it useful

"Internet should be fine to grind on, the also have a backup generator i think for power outages.

Rooms were decent enough, the 1 i stayed in was pretty big and had a balcony.

Area is safe, its in the middle of town with the touristy areas closer to the beach, 5 mins on scooter. There is a convienece store, burger place and restaurant all within walking distance.

The owner is pretty good, english guy with cambodian wife, recreational poker player. They run tournaments/cash games 2 nights a week i think. If you had any problems im pretty sure they would fix it.

Showers had hot water.

Bar food was pretty good, i ate mostly downstairs big breakfast every day was $6, and they had a different big meal everynight for around the same.

Theres quite a lot of good food/restaurants down at the beaches, apparently the french restaurants are really good.

No bugs that i saw.

What you should expect: its a 2 hour bus ride from Phnom Penh, when you arrive you should stay a couple of nights there, i stayed at Walkabout Hotel $12 night.

Catch the bus from the terminal to sinoukville, the bus drops you off literally outside Charlie's. Its a big corner pub building, with the small bar, pool tables and some seating in the main area. There are a range of girls who work there whos job is to entertain you by playing pool, waitressing drinks etc, these girls aren't pros and you cant buy them. There is an older crowd of regulars who hang out most nights, but it is very quiet.

Overall the town is quite small but spreadout, with a few good beaches close by, its very cheap and tourist friendly, didnt go to the casino but would expect it to be ok for games. Smoking weed is fine at any bar there and very easy to buy. Be careful riding scooters if you choose to hire 1, i did but found it to be a hassle having to lock it up everytime.

Good quiet place to live and for the price cant be beaten."

I thought Cambodia was cheaper. $6 for breakfast is more than I'm paying here in makati.

What's the average monthly rate around the red fox area. I stayed at Flamingo hotel and they charged $600 a month and the wifi sucked and service was rude.

ya the only thing negative id say ive noticed about charlies is that the food isnt as cheap as everything else, i mean im not gonna complain about paying $4 for a meal, particularly when everything else is so cheap, but the food costs arent in line with the rest

lovelee go on the hunt for a $150 a month place in makati that includes wifi and is at the very worst liveable and then try to say it isnt cheaper, spend $15 a day on food and your monthly must spend expenses are still in the $650 range

Anyone know what the best internet option is in Phnom Penh for grinding online. I'm assuming wifi with a 3g back up is the best way to go, but anyone know the best package/company to go with? I had a basic 3g sim card last time I was in PP just for surfing the net, but it was super slow and cut out all the time, no way I could trust that for online poker.

Quality and serving size is slightly higher than the same breakfasts in Phils though, just for comparison.

You could probably go to any countries news website pullout a story about murder or whatever. Also that story was from thailand right i dont see the relevence?

Yeah if you are dumb you might have a problem anywhere but that applies to your home country as well. Cambodia does still have this image of craziness that has changed especially in the past 5 years.

That is possible, when I was there was told it was $30, may have even been posted in this thread. Was during the low season too.

I played Naga World for a few weeks and never felt comfortable leaving there. Learned that foreigners got robbed 3 nights in a row at gun point. On the 3rd night the cops intervened, a chase ensued on motobike, guy pulled over, shot and killed both cops and got away.

That is my Naga experience. I recommend people be careful there and I'm not somebody who fears the world or 3rd world countries. I find the idea that somebody can be in Phnom Penh and not recognize that even a thousand dollars (nonetheless 5k) is a **** load of money, more than a years salary for a lot of people, to be mind blowing. I mean people get killed for less where I'm from (Los Angeles). Travel smart. It's the only place I've ever been that I don't really recommend

$5000 is almost 10 years salary for most Cambodians and criminals would not think twice about robbing you for it. If you think you are safe walking down the street in a country like Cambodia you are severely deluded.

You are all taking my 5k point out of context i said it in relation to othet people having ten times that and openly playing with there ( remembet you dont even see the vip bit in naga ). The story about foreigners getting robbed etc was Chinese guys who were obviously playing for high stakes not 5/10 hold em.

Anyhow i have lived here for 8 years and have never been robbed etc.. Same as any country the stupid get robbed..

So are you saying walking down the street is unsafe in general or just doing it with 5k ?
