My point was that I hope these protests don't end with 80+ protesters being killed and parts of the city burnt to the ground.

I think Hun Sen is basically a mobster and Sam Rainsy might be an improvement, but the best thing that can happen for a nation is developing a precedent for a peaceful transition of power. Secure a foothold in parliament, then get strong international monitoring for the new election so you don't end up with two parties claiming victory. No one really knows who won that election. The whole country is corrupt, including any citizens who will vote for someone handing them dollar bills.

Or we could try your idea. They could start with the rich people, then move onto the teachers, and why not just hang anyone wearing glasses to be on the safe side.

violence and intimidation is the only language the money grubbing cambodian elite understand. hun sen threatened civil war if he lost.

Without wishing to turn this into the politics thread my belief was that CPP ( Hun Sen current government ) lose in the cities and win in the countryside were many people vote for who ever their village chief tells them to vote for having spoken to many Khmers about this from the countryside i would say this is true. Also a lot of people in PP vote CRNP ( Sam Rainsy ) as they have better education / use facebook etc and see through the governments nonsense.

I'm going to Cambodia for 9 days now, was planning to spend some time in the city centres. Is it enough to walk away when I see the police or should I avoid any specific areas completely? Think my PP hostel is very close to those barbed wire pics :/

if your stayting where the hostels are and bar areas you are fine. cambodia is a safe place, unless your looking for action but defi nitely lot safer then it was 5 yrs ago.

The protests are scheduled to be over tomorrow. They're only happening in PP as far as I know. It sounds like today was fine, but I'd go to Siem Reap for a couple days first just because most of the touristy sites in PP are in the areas involved.

since ive moved to cambodia i have noticed a lot of stuff breaking overnight :S first it was my laptop keyboard, i woke up one day and a load of keys randomly stopped working (1,3,q,t,u,p,j)... then i started to use another keyboard and a few days later some of those keys also stopped working (8,9,shift)...

ive had a USB phone charger and a normal phone charger both break overnight, my brothers monitor stopped working overnight, im sure there are a few more things but i cant think right now... is this normal? :S

today i woke up with 2 new problems on my laptop... 1. when i type, the cursor randomly decides to go back to the start... and 2. when i am scrolling down a page, for whatever reason it will randomly jump back to the top of the page... both are really starting to tilt me. any ideas on fixing this?

I plug all my electrics that I care about into a regulator that keeps my power supply at 220v ( think its called a regulator not 100% sure ) also if your house is relatively near the ocean stuff can corrode quickly. My friend lives beach side and is on his 4th MacBook in 5 years..
