I never made it past PP the times I've been in Cambo. What appealed to me about Snooky was $120 a month for a guesthouse , at that time. It sounded like a cheap place to sit out the UK winter. I will probably stick to PP or Bangkok though.

ya the cheapness of everything is the main draw, plus there is a beach

it is also extremely laid back and a easy place to transition to asian life

Funny how in comparison to Nha Trang, Vietnam, both seem to be seen from the outside, similar places... They both have a beach, lots of tourists, bars, nightlife... But while I LOVE Nha Trang, I can't stand spending anytime in Snooky...

I can see some people who are more in the hooker scene to enjoy more Snooky than Nha Trang, because while there are still a few working girls in Nha Trang, it is easier to find a girlfriend, casual or serious. Where as Snooky is more of a prostitute scene, with the dirty old men that it brings along... Same thing with the travelers I met : they were young or very old in Snooky, where Nha Trang brought some more interesting people there...

Food is WAY better in Nha Trang and in Vietnam in general, as opposed to Cambodia. The weather is more mild in Nha Trang as well. Internet connection is also better : I only lost the connection once in 2 months in Nha Trang, while losing it every single day in Cambodia. I obviously had an internet stick for backup, but that could only be reliable about 95% of the time...

As far as poker goes, I did not play live in Sihanoukville - just online - but heard that the game (while not the toughest by any means), was infested with regs, mainly foreigners. So would suggest Naga World as far as live poker goes, for I found that game to be very soft. Also, since the 5-10 game wasn't running anymore at Nagaworld (at least in May), it made the 1-2 game more of a 2-5 game, for a few players would buy in for more of the min of 200$ (one even bought in for 4000$ and proceeded to lose all of it in just under 6 hours...).

Thanks for your input, Shakespear.

Dubn, I'd love to hear more about Nha Trang in the Vietnam thread, most of that thread has been about Saigon. Nha Trang is definitely on my list of places to consider for beachside grinding.

Really? I only spent a few days there admittedly, but I was told the only decent place to end up was that place right on the beach - was ok to be fair.

Yeah, I had the same impression about the nightlife. Please tell us more about the nightlife scene..

If you mean The Sailing Club, yeah it is a bar I appreciate a lot. The tourist area is in fact limited to a few streets, and the nightlife is limited to a few bars, like in Snooky. You can easily party until 6am, the same as Snooky. But like I said, I just enjoyed more the vibes in Nha Trang, the restaurants, the 4 bars I would go to.

If it is girlie bars you like (the hooker bars), then Cambodia or Thailand is more your place : Nha Trang only has 1 and a few hookers here and there. But if you want to have a girlfriend, then going to the Sailing Club and picking up a girl for either the night or more long term, is quite easy.

So as far as the grind goes, like I said, the beach is very nice, the diving is cheap, there is quite a few places to visit around if you purchase a bike. The food is amazing, the girls beautiful, the connection good, the massage places plentiful (with or without happy endings). I guess it is a matter of preference, but I enjoyed the grind in Nha Trang, while Snooky tilted me. Oh yeah, another huge upside : the hotels are WAY nicer and at a greater value than Sihanoukville.
Well, I don't want to post anymore about Vietnam in a Cambodian thread, but will copy paste this in the Vietnam thread...

Internet in Cambodia is shady, but much better in Phnom Penh than in Sihanoukville. You will need an internet stick, but it did happen once that I lost both the connection at my hotel and could not connect on my stick. It was past 12 am, so while I was trying to go to another hotel to get a connection, the late time did not permit. I finally connected again after an hour, but only to see that I had busted out in 1 tournament, and had only 35% of my stack in another one. GL

This was Phnom Penh, and my hotel was yes far from other hotels. Many hotels close their lobbys past midnight in Phnom Penh, so you can't really just barge in to steal the connection...

As far as Sihanoukville goes, when you lose connection at your hotel, often the neighboring hotels will have lost their connection as well, especially in a place like Otres beach (not everyone stays at Ocheteaul Beach...).

So while it only happened to me once in 4 months there, that 1 time still cost me close to 1000$ (that means enough money to pay an extra 8$/day for better hotel/reliability over 4 months...), so it is something to think about...

A stick will be 40$ and just 5$/month if you use it strickly for a back up plan.

i dunno i was there 7 months and was never in a situation where all my internet options were gone, and the hotels have different providers i know that mine, the one next door, and the one across the street were all different companies

the only issue i can think of would be if there happened to be a power outtage at the same time metfone happened to be down which seems like a very long shot (since metfone was only down once or twice in my 7 months) but is still possible........ but even then you just find a hotel with a generator and buy a watermelon shake and sit in their lobby

Fair enough. But it does happen, like I stated above. In places like Otres beach, when you have a power outage, the internet will go down pretty much everywhere. While my AIS stick was reliable at most times, it did happen once that both my options were down.

If you are a cash game player, I wouldn't sweat it too much. But if you are an MTT player, like I am, are heads up with a 10 to 1 chip advantage, lose connection, internet stick doesn't work and you finish second for 1000$ dollars difference, it does suck (let us assume we win the tournament 95% of the time had our connection not quit on us, that is still 950$...). Yes those quite a few run bad items that need to happen at the same time... But it happens, like that 1 outer that hits now and then...

you could have taken a tuk tuk to charlie harpers and been playing 10 minutes later

again in 7 months i never once found myself in that spot and i played mtts every single day, maybe the moral of the story is get metfone instead of AIS (or both) and live close to other hotels

I wouldn't worry about Internet connection I play only mtt's and have 6mb uncapped fibre optic at home with 3 different USB sticks for back up and I only use the USB sticks when the power goes out which doesn't seem to be happening much the last few months.

Where can I buy a universal usb stick(for internet surfing) in PP? I would like one that can run to different sim cards at the same time if that is possible.
Are the metfone usb stick locked or can I use it with beeline etc?

That is probably because you did not use "mobile partner", you cannot use the program that comes with metfone, and sometimes you need to configure the program to make it work too. But it might be locked too. The true stick from Thailand work here in Cambodia as long as I use the "mobile partner" program.
