Hey guys, I'm enlisting in the Air Force very soon, and my job (Radio and Television Broadcasting LOL) is an overseas-only deployment. I like this, because my worst nightmare is being stuck in ****ing Nebraska for 4 years. At BMT, you fill out a 'dream list' - the 8 bases you would most like to be stationed at in order of preference. Obviously they'll send you where they need you, but they try to match your list where possible.

Basically, I am a 23 yo single, good-looking guy, and I'll be going in with a little chunk of savings. I enjoy dark, heavy, even opaque beer, and strong whiskey. I like to **** lots of different women. I am a very good musician and a mediocre poker player by 2+2 standards. I do not smoke or have any desire to try any kinds of drugs. I do not speak any foreign languages, though I believe I am a very quick study. I also skateboard ldo.

Places I have been already: UK (Manchester, Liverpool, London only), South Korea (one week on the Air Base in Kunsan playing with a band), various tropical scuba diving vacations. Though I was in Korea, I didn't get to see it. I was on base the entire week and it might as well have been San Antonio.

If I had to make a personal 'want to visit' list, it would include Ireland/Scotland, Japan, FRA/GER/SPA/ITA, and Australia in roughly that order.

Anyway, on to the list. For exact locations within these countries, go here.

England: RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall
Germany: Ramstein AB, Spangdahlem AB
Italy: Aviano AB
Portugal: Lajes Field
Turkey: Incirlik AB
South Korea: Kunsan AB, Osan AB
Japan: Kadena AB, Misawa AB, Yokota AB
Guam: Andersen AFB

Portugal is likely not an option, as 'Field' indicates a very small installation where my job is likely not needed. I'd rather not end up in Turkey, as that has one of the higher potential ****-hitting-the-fan ratings (I don't want to die, or I'd be joining the army).

What do you guys think? What would your top 8 (or even just 3) be in my situation? I get 30 days of leave per year, so I can basically take a week off every two months and go wherever. I want to experience as much cool **** as I can.

What base in Japan would you recommend first? They're pretty spread out.

Side note, I prefer cooler weather to hot i.e. happier when I lived in Seattle than here in Dallas.

Guam is pretty much the worst place on earth. I would take that off your list completely. Think Nebraska with more humidity, much dumber locals, and no attractive women.

Where'd you come up with that list of assignments? And who told you 3N0x2 is overseas only? I see several stateside assignments on the enlisted authorized list in AMS (including Offut AFB) and don't see some of the assignments you've listed. You also have to consider the skill level, you'll only be eligible for 3-level assignments. Maybe a 5-level if their manning is really low.

Is there an air base in Bulgaria now? Bulgaria is cheap, the women are beautiful, and you're close to Greece if you like Mediterranean life.

Clearly you know a lot more about this than I do. I'm still in the DEP, and the only info I've been able to get on post-tech school stuff is online or what my recruiter knows offhand, so it's obviously not much/not correct.

Everyone I've talked to that has spent time in Ramstein has said it's awesome, so that'll likely be #1, but if you've got insight into... anything really, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks.

Ramstein would be pretty high up on my list. I saw there are some slots at SHAPE in Belgium 3N0x2, I'd put that on the list too. I spent 2 years at a GSU (geographically separated unit) of SHAPE in Glons, Belgium and it was awesome. Anywhere in Western Europe would be good, it's easy to travel around.

I'll double check the enlisted authorized list in a little bit and see what else is out there. I've heard that Aviano is a ****hole, but I've never been. I've heard good things about Lajes but it's on a small island so it would suck for traveling. I've heard good things about Yakota also, but never been personally. If there are slots for your job in Korea you'll end up there eventually. It's only a year tour and then you get to choose your next assignment (base of preference).

I'll post again once I check the list.

Awesome, really appreciated. I'm meeting the recruiter tomorrow, I'll try to get some similar information out of him.

Don't know dick about the military stuff, but both Germany and England obviously score high on the **** lots of women/cool weather/dark beer/whiskey scales. English women are meh in quality, German slightly higher.

Even so I'd definitely try go get some time in Japan or South Korea to experience totally different countries. Plus the women are pretty hot, personally I think Koreans >>>> Japanese.

My job just booked, and I leave for basic July 14th. A master sergeant at my recruiter's office said the most likely deployment locations are Ramstein and Lakenheath, which is awesome.

Sorry I haven't had time to check out the list, I'm deployed to Afghanistan right now and it's been pretty nuts lately. I just wanted to clarify one thing for you, you keep referring to deployments. Deployments are temporary assignments, usually to a combat zone, but could also be to places like Qatar, Kuwait or Turkey. Places like RAF Lakenheath or Ramstein are permanent duty locations. The main difference is the amount of time you stay there. Deployments are anywhere from 90 days (unusual) to 15 months (also unusual) but seem to average about 6 months, then you return to your home station. I'm on a 9 month deployment now that had 3 months of training on the front end, so I'll be gone for a year when I finally get back to Lackland where I'm stationed.

I'll check that list as soon as I can and get back to you. Congrats on booking the job!
