Last-minute travel Q: flying (domestically) with expired license/passport Last-minute travel Q: flying (domestically) with expired license/passport

Supposed to fly within the US tomoro with a group of friends, one of which just realized that both his DL and passport are expired.

Are they going to allow him on the plane? You'd think this sort of thing would have a bright-line rule, but despite 2 hours on the phone with both Continental and the TSA, I have yet to conclusively determine whether this is going to be a problem. Now, before you say "duh > post 9/11 they're def going to require a non-expired photo-ID", consider that I found *nothing* either online or on the phone with Continental/TSA stating unequivocally that you need a non-expired DL/PP to get on a domestic flight. It was actually shocking how loosy-goosey it all seemed. As best I can tell, there's absolutely no bright-line rule requiring a non-expired DL/PP. As long as he doesn't piss off the airport personnel, it appears that the worst thing that can happen to him (as long as he shows one of those expired IDs...both of which expired in the last 2 wks) is that he'll receive mandatory extra screening.

Does anyone have any 1st-hand accounts of either being allowed or denied on a domestic flight with expired photo identification? The internet seems awash with clueless ppl clamoring "no wai do u get past security with an expired ID", but when it comes down to actually reading the rules, I have yet to see where it says that he won't be allowed on the flight...

His documents are expired, which means they are no good. If you get a careless or understanding agent, they might let him through, but they shouldn't. The fact is that he is taking a chance on being denied access, and then I assume he'll take the same risk in trying to do it again coming home.

An expired driver's license is not a driver's license; it is a piece of plastic. An expired passport is technically just as worthless. Why doesn't your friend run down to the DMV before his flight and get some new ID?

He should go to the DMV and get a new one really quick if possible.

I have heard firsthand accounts of people getting on planes without IDs (someone I know through business who had his wallet stolen before a flight). There is an arduous screening process, and they ask you lots of questions.

I would get to the airport an extra hour early.

if flying domestically i pretty sure you should be able to use two forms of non-photo IDs, i.e. birth certificate and social security card. id just do that and not worry about it

you definitely need id, it just doesnt have to be photo id, although if it isnt, there are other restrictions

After looking at it closer though, it seems like you _can_ fly without ID but
Quote:
Passengers who do not or cannot present an acceptable ID will have to provide information to the Transportation Security Officer performing Travel Document Checking duties in order to verify their identity. Passengers who are cleared through this process may be subject to additional screening. Passengers whose identity cannot be verified by TSA may not be allowed to go through the checkpoint or onto an airplane.
So it is possible, but prob not worth the hassle unless you absolutely cannot get an ID in time

So, when you said "you definitely need id, it just doesnt have to be photo id" so authoritatively, you definitely didn't have a clue what you were talking about and were just making **** up?

Call the airport/airline and say your wallet was stolen. Find out the procedure for getting on the plane in that instance. I just had to go to the police station a fill out a piece of paper.
