So yeah, I really just want to rent a camper van, drive out onto an empty salt flat (or sandy desert if it can be driven on), and chill for a few days.

I am living in Vegas atm. Would anyone know of a nearby empty salt flats? The only two things I am after really are a complete lack of people, and no legal issues (as in it's not privately owned, or I'm not allowed to camp there or whatev)

Just looking at google maps there appears to be several white spots which could be salt flats

Oh, I didn't know that. I'm assuming the gov wouldn't want people camping on most of it?

And yes, death valley is only a 3 hour drive according to google maps. Would you happen to know if I can drive on it, and camp on it?

I believe most of it is for weapons testing.

I don't think there are any parts of the salt flat at Death Valley that you are allowed to roam about freely on, but there are camping areas available. Google can tell you more.

Black Rock desert or Wendover, the area on your picture is mostly bombing grounds.
