Lake Tahoe Nevada questions

Im considering taking a trip to Lake Tahoe but I have a few questions for people who have been there and this seems to be the place to ask. Ive been searching sites for the last hour but its really hard to tell where I need to be because of course every place.says theyre the best.

First off, does.it matter if im in north or south tahoe?

Im obv not gonna be on the lake.in.winter but.should I.still stay on the lake for scenery?

How.close to.the lake is the skiing activities?

Are the casinos full blown casinos? one place seemed to only have slots? Id like crap tables

Are there sportsbooks in town?

Anyone stayed at horizon resort and.casino? Seems reasonably priced but is it crappy?

Thanks to anyone who could answer these questions and sorry if.this thread is in the wrong place

Thx again

Re: Lake Tahoe Nevada questions

The Horizon is in S. Lake Tahoe which is the main casino area (4 casino-hotels). Haven't stayed there, someone else will have to comment on hotel quality. All casinos there are "full blown" so you can play table games and bet on sports. For skiing, Heavenly is nearby and buses will pick up/drop off at the casinos. Scenery is not that important in your hotel choice because if you are skiing you will get nice views of the lake from the ski lifts/slopes.

If you want to stay in North Tahoe and a casino is important to you, the Hyatt resort is a good choice. It's got a beautiful spot on the lake and a full service casino. Free shuttle to several ski areas. More isolated, not as much action/nightlife as in S. Tahoe.

Re: Lake Tahoe Nevada questions

I've probably been to Tahoe ~50 times in the last 10 years to drink, do some gambling, and go out, but have done a fair amount of boarding as well. Little older but fun/chill crowd.

The money doesn't quite flow into Tahoe like it used to (real estate downturn + Indian casinos in Cali have take much of the gambling destination crowd), but it's still a great place to be if you're the type of person where everything doesn't have to be the latest/greatest/built-or-remodeled within the last 5 years.

Definitely can't beat the setting/natural beauty.

Like poker, that hugely "depends." Safest bet it to stay in Stateline which is just on the Nevada side of South Lake Tahoe, especially your first time there.

It fricking gorgeous, but usually expensive. You'll have plenty of opportunities to take it in if you're not right on the shore.

If you stay in Stateline (i.e. Horizon) you can literally take the Gondola up to Heavenly from next to Harrah's. The traversing trails are a pain if you board, but the view from the top is A+++, especially your first time to Tahoe. Plenty of other skiing options around, though not sure how to arrange transit if you don't have a car.

Most of the smaller casinos, not anymore. In Stateline - Harrah's, Harveys, and Lakeside yes (full blown with craps/sportsbooks). Harvey's has a decent poker room as well. Some casinos spread around North Side but haven't been to those in a few years.

I've stayed there several times in just the last few years. It's kind of crappy, but it fully gets the job done for the price (I'm usually just looking for a shower and a decent bed). Very short walk to Harrah's/Harvery's which is where you want to be (or Lakeside a little longer walk).

It's the equivalent of staying at a cheaper place on the Strip, then spending your time at a nicer close by casino (difference being you'll only have to walk about 100 yards from Horizon).

Re: Lake Tahoe Nevada questions

I lived there years ago and agree with the comments. You didn't mention your skiing/boarding level, but Heavenly is great for expert level, and if you rent a car or take a shuttle, Squaw Valley is world famous (expert), and Northstar is great for beginners through expert. Have fun and don't forget your camera.

Re: Lake Tahoe Nevada questions

Hyatt regency $350/nite the week between xmas and new years, and only $165/nite the week after new years. Might be changing to the week after new years, can do $165/nite to be at a marvelous hotel, no way can afford $350/nite. Thx again guys, the replies are really helpful

Re: Lake Tahoe Nevada questions

My friends have a place in Incline Village on N. Lake Tahoe and I spent a whole summer with them doing nothing but boating, getting drunk, playing beach vball, and lounging at they Hyatt. It is a bit pricy but it's the nicest hotel in N Lake Tahoe AINEC IMO. And for being a town full of wealthy people the snobbery is at a minimum and people all seem really friendly for the most part.

Heavenly has a baby run at the very bottom if you take the shuttle over. That pic at the top of California side with Lake Tahoe in the background of you and your family is one you put on your office desk for the next 10 years, though it'll be a struggle to get all the way back down if you're truly beginner.

Thanks a lot I will try and get that picture. I think after I board for a day I should be ok. I mean Im not gonna be tearing it up but I should be able to make it down, I think lol. Havent boarded since a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming in high school. There were som pretty crazy slopes up there if I remember right.

Really looking forward to this

Re: Lake Tahoe Nevada questions

Bump.
So I'm going to be visiting Tahoe for the first time next week for a concert. Was wondering if anyone could recommend any must-do activities in the area. I live in Vegas, so nothing gambling/casino related, preferably.
Will be with a group of 4 , 30-somethings. Any great mountainbiking/hiking spots, etc??
Thanks!!

Yes that is everywhere, Tahoe is all about that. You can find it easily once you're there. If you insist on doing Internet research look somewhere else than a poker travel forum .

Tahoe is heaven. Enjoy.
