I've probably been to Tahoe ~50 times in the last 10 years to drink, do some gambling, and go out, but have done a fair amount of boarding as well. Little older but fun/chill crowd.
The money doesn't quite flow into Tahoe like it used to (real estate downturn + Indian casinos in Cali have take much of the gambling destination crowd), but it's still a great place to be if you're the type of person where everything doesn't have to be the latest/greatest/built-or-remodeled within the last 5 years.
Definitely can't beat the setting/natural beauty.

Like poker, that hugely "depends." Safest bet it to stay in Stateline which is just on the Nevada side of South Lake Tahoe, especially your first time there.

Im obv not gonna be on the lake.in.winter but.should I.still stay on the lake for scenery?

It fricking gorgeous, but usually expensive. You'll have plenty of opportunities to take it in if you're not right on the shore.

How.close to.the lake is the skiing activities?

If you stay in Stateline (i.e. Horizon) you can literally take the Gondola up to Heavenly from next to Harrah's. The traversing trails are a pain if you board, but the view from the top is A+++, especially your first time to Tahoe. Plenty of other skiing options around, though not sure how to arrange transit if you don't have a car.

Are the casinos full blown casinos? one place seemed to only have slots? Id like crap tables
Are there sportsbooks in town?
|
Most of the smaller casinos, not anymore. In Stateline - Harrah's, Harveys, and Lakeside yes (full blown with craps/sportsbooks). Harvey's has a decent poker room as well. Some casinos spread around North Side but haven't been to those in a few years.

Anyone stayed at horizon resort and.casino? Seems reasonably priced but is it crappy?
|
I've stayed there several times in just the last few years. It's kind of crappy, but it fully gets the job done for the price (I'm usually just looking for a shower and a decent bed). Very short walk to Harrah's/Harvery's which is where you want to be (or Lakeside a little longer walk).
It's the equivalent of staying at a cheaper place on the Strip, then spending your time at a nicer close by casino (difference being you'll only have to walk about 100 yards from Horizon).
