Batu Ferringhi on Penang fits the bill. Lots of high end hotels and decent beach. The rest of the island will be interesting enough for a two week stay that you won't get bored.

East Coast mainland beaches are nicer, but most are so remote you won't get the internet requirements unless you do a ton of research and even then there is no guarantee it will be stable.

Singapore is great no doubt. The prices (real estate) keep me from living there anytime soon.

go to Langkawi, probably fits the bill. We loved it there. Or just grab a quick flight from Air Asia into Thailand.

I didn't like the beaches in Penang at all since some (or all?) are artificial.

Yes, reminds of the south Texas flavour, but hard to understand sometimes.. 'Lah' instead of 'Way' behind everything said..way! They just opened a new taco spot in Boat Quay..but didn't have they nerve to try.. I guess I'm too purist..miss the breakfast tacos

As for Singpore..Indonesian is spoken, but the 4 official languages, Mandarin, English, Malay, and ?? Tamil??.. damn I forget now..been in Thailand a week and my mind starts to wander..

Christian/Island based nation (Philippines) or a Muslim petroleum based economy ..and there is always the Borneo-malay area that no one seems to comment on

Philippines is old iUS stomping ground..so English is widely spoken, and everyone likes basketball/boxing.. Malaysia has a grandprix, but there are lots of things more than that to compare..

Manila got hit hard a few weeks ago with storms..and is always a mess reguardless..but people in PHIL are nice and smile more often IMO

I liked Cebu, and central vasayas region

and in PH you can see the women's hairdos if that's a plus?

"Food here is unbeatable, but liquor/beer a bit more than the other SE Asia spots of Thailand/Phil, but you get what you pay for."

Actually you get the exact same beer for 5x the price. What you are actually paying for is morality tax that goes towards subsidising public housing for Singaporean citizens.

I've been away from Malaysia (my home country) for a few years now but am back in KL and Penang at some point every year.

Off the top of my head I've heard that DiGi's mobile broadband packages (http://www.digi.com.my/internet/broa...tractfree.html) are alright, though they've got download limits.

If you have access to a phone line it may make more sense to get a Streamyx package but the site's not loading for me now so you'll have to look that up yourself.

BUT do note that Streamyx is still pretty dire years after its inception. I had the most random problems on the Streamyx connections in both Penang and KL this summer playing on Stars and Bwin. Sometimes it just wouldn't connect, sometimes it'd be fine, sometimes even Pokertracker couldn't boot because it couldn't connect to the license server. I think it was a bit better when I was in KL.

And for all you know DiGi may not be much better.

I guess I took it for granted good internet would be on the random islands around malaysia. I want to hit up some beaches and still have internet, found some decent places. Anyone have any other ideas. Just want sick beach to kick back, snorkle and lazy crap. Don't need a sick party scene, just a palm and a beach with a connection for a week.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Redang_Sea_Beach.jpg for example???

been in malaysia for the past 3 months. Food and shopping is great but the internet isn't great. You can get one of those portable broadband things from Digi/Maxis to surf the net but they are not reliable enough for playing online. Apply for a streamyx connection if you can but i heard the wait can be quite long. At the moment I am using Amax Wimax which is pretty good, one disconnect every 2 weeks on average.

Wimax connections heavily rely on where you live. But most telco companies offer a 7 day no questions money bk guarantee.

Any 2+2er in Kuala Lumpur wanna meet up jz drop me a PM.

Um not sure what you define as normal. If by mcdonalds you mean its prob around 15 ringit for a large big mac meal If by hawker food and small cafes you can get a bowl of noodles and a drink for 6 ringit which is all the food you should be eating in malaysia.
