Thailand apparently has some interesting live poker rooms to join up with...

Malaysia would indeed be a fantastic place to live. Food is very cheap. You can have a range of meals in basic places for just over a dollar a go. Malaysian people are generally quite polite and you'll be bothered far less by locals looking for money than you would in Thailand. Malaysia doesn't have the seediness or obsession with money that's rampant in Thailand. You don't need a visa for Malaysia. You can stay for 90 days at a time and the stamp in your passport on each arrival is free. It's also an easy country to live in with English being widespread. Personally I'd recommend Penang, the country's second city.

The Malaysian government isn't tolerant at all. Chinese non-muslims are allowed to live there under a pseudo-apartheid system that gives benefits to Muslim ethnic Malays.

The reason Singapore is separate country (used to be part of Malaysia) is that the majority Chinese population couldn't live with being 2nd class citizens any more.

You would have to be crazy to live in a muslim country by choice.

I'm spending 3 days in KL and 4 days in Penang. Any suggestions on how I should allocate my time? I only have Petronas Towers on my itinerary and I'm planning on skipping Genting..

i went to this stupid casino in shorts and sandals to play blackjack and whatever other crazy asian games they offer and they wouldn't let me in. it was at least a 1 hour trip to get there and there was also a crazy rain that started shortly after i left my place.

yes you can get money out very easily. i don't know about in. never tried that. as for $300 a month to be in KL that sounds very cheap. i'd say def. won't be enough if you want to have any fun. i remember there being some nice bars that were $10 cover charge and drink were at least $5. not everything there is cheap.

Of all the countries I've been to, including five in South East Asia, I would put two Muslim countries - Malaysia and Indonesia - at the top of my list in terms of having pleasant people and being decent places for a westerner to live in. It's a shame that large parts of the world have become narrowminded and dismissive of Islamic countries. Go to these places, meet the real people and you'll soon see how outrageous it is rule out living in these countries.

I'm not Muslim by the way.

I'm going to be relocating to Indonesia in the future (my wife is from there) & some of what you say is true but not all. Northern Sumatra in Indonesia has a large christian population which I believe is LARGER than the Muslim community. I'm trying to work out all the logistics about a move there & have considered Malaysia & Singapore as well. However since we own land in Indonesia obviously that would be much more convenient. Personally I don't care for or like Muslims at all for the same reasons you mentioned. But being an American & a Texan at that...bring it on!

Malaysia is the Switzerland of Asia. Malaysia Boleh! The internet in KL was heavy on the disconnects a few years ago, not sure how much that has changed. You could access all the sites online but I highly doubt it's legal given their laws.

Ya its a Muslim country but their population consists of Indian/Malay/Chinese which creates a nice tolerant balance to live in.

It's probably illegal but no one cares. There's plenty of us who play online. Click2pay used to be the only deposit and withdrawal method but I heard lately that Neteller has become available for Malaysians as well.

Langkawi island is very beautiful
Malaysia is slowly but surely heading into "intolerant muslim country"... Look at the headlines in the last year. Just this week they "sticked" a woman for drinking beer. They also carried a beheaded cow's head around in KL a few weeks ago because some indians wanted to open a new temple. The government is also extremely pro-muslim and it shows in all their policies.

That being said, Malaysia is a nice place anyway, especially if you have money... but the internet is extremely unreliable and I found it really hard to play while I was there.

skip Genting, it sucks... KL doesn't have much to do except shopping and of course visiting the towers. Penang is nice with some ok beaches. If you want to really see the beauty of Malaysia go to Sarawak, Pangkor or Langkawi.

Hey, sorry for the gap. I'm still in Singapore, staying at a hostel at the moment. Food here is unbeatable, but liquor/beer a bit more than the other SE Asia spots of Thailand/Phil, but you get what you pay for.

I stayed around for the Formula One Race 2 weekends, back, and that was the best thing! Concerts, top end performance for the buck. I'm not big into partying, but there are plenty of clubs, etc here.

The transportation is great, easiest and least congested of SE Asia, good parks and breathing room to get out and about. The MRT (train) is amazingly clean, ontime, and a trip costs about $.75-$1.00 one way anywhere. I'm staying near the city, but far enough away that it quiets down.

Weather is in the 80-90's with 60%+ humidity..feels like Mcallen in May/September, doens't change much except for the occasional rain. Did I mention the food.. Indian/Chinese/Malay etc..

There is a good mixture of people here, and will not be hassled at all like in Thaiand/Philippines to buy anything. On the flipside, it can seem a bit sterile if you've traveled there. Cars/Cigarettes/Alcohol are expensive. Rooms tend to be a bit more also, but I stay for $18/night..just a hostel, not hotel..but there are rooms available, places to stay.

90 day visa upon arrival, and can extend it easy, Government works good, no shifty border crossings, or imigration. Budget air to anywhere from here.. R/T to Bangkok or Phuket is $100, or same to Manila, little more to Bali..but anywhere in a few hours makes it a nice hub.

Partying, there are options. MRT stops at 12:30am, and cabs charge a 50% fee after 12..so there is a financial incentives to not be out..but as with anything its all doable.

I'm off to get a bite, will try and put more up later.. PM if you have any questions, would be great to have some poker players hanging around..

ANyone want to join?

Thanks for the update. I'm not into partying/clubs as I'm 41 married & even when I was young wasn't into that. The weather part scares me! If it's like McAllen, that's NOT good. Sounds good though. Me & my wife will check it out. I still like Kuala Lumpur, I didn't get to see enough of Singapore.

I didn't know what you were looking for, I've been mainly doing day to day activities here. Not much partying since the Grand Prix weekend. That was the best thing I've done since been here for sure. All is good around, the MRT is the best I've ever used. Easy to move about. Shopping is good..

Hope you get back here, it's easiest place to move around I've found yet.. a bit sterile on the human interaction..the english is colorful too..similar to Spanglish?!

You can get by with English only; it is the language of administration, business, science and most education too (certainly all higher ed). The Singlish accent is a little awkward at first, especially if English isn't your first language, but it's mostly due to the speed and if you can get them to slow down you should have no problems.

If you were going to learn a second language, I would recommend Mandarin. Having said that, there are very large communities speaking Hokkien, Malay and Tamil, as well as a whole bunch of other random stuff.
