Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia - Poker

I recently found out that Malaysia is one of the cheapest places in the world. I was thinking about going there for 3 months next summer to check it out, with the possibility of moving there full time. However, I have some questions: Firstly, can you play online poker in Malaysia? Is it legal? Can you get your money in and out easily over there? Secondly, is $300 a month enough to live on over there? I heard that £150 ($300) more than covered all living expenses, is this true? Finally, can you play in live casinos over there?

If you know anything about this place, let us know

Hi,

Malaysia is a nice place to visit. Definately a very cheap place to visit.

I've played on PokerStars there a couple times. Definately you will be able to connect, but it's not legal. So, you can play.. just don't get caught. :p

The only casino there at the moment is Genting Highlands and they don't spread poker.

I think you can only get money in and out of banks. So if you transfer money into say an HSBC account, you will be able to withdraw money through an atm here. Other than that, your only option is like western union or somehting.

Does $300 include rent? It really depends on where you live. If you live outside of Kuala Lumpur then it could cover cost of living. But if you live in Kuala Lumpur, you'll definately need more than that, unless you plan on sharing apartments with other people. I'd say if you chose to live a non-extravagant lifestyle in Kuala Lumpur, then maybe $600-$800 will have you live comfortably.

I have been to Malaysia more than 8 times.

First of all, it's cheap but not that cheap. £150 would be pushing it. You could get by on maybe £300 a month excluding rent, leading a normal lifestyle (no travel, shopping, wining and dining, partying). If you want a comfortable lifestyle I'd say you need £400-450 a month. Again this is without rent.

Outside of KL maybe £300 a month could get you by but definitely not in KL

And it's not true that you can't get money from ATMs. With a Solo/Maestro card or Cirrus enabled credit card you can easily withdraw money from any ATM. I have done this dozens of times.

The Muslim country thing doesn't really apply. It's nothing like the middle east. Think in terms of Turkey. It's technically a Muslim country but in reality very secular and tolerant. At least a third of their population are of Chinese or Indian descent, and they openly practice their religions i.e. Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Catholicism

Langkawi island is very beautiful

Hey there,

Yes you can play online poker here but you will face difficulties in depositing and withdrawing if you use local banks and/or credit cards. The only online payment processor we can use is click2pay and entropay. Western union is another option especially for stars. For withdrawals, click2pay provides the best solution with its Debit card. I've personally used it myself so no problems there but there is a RM 3k limit through the local ATMs (roughly USD 900). Alternatively you can request for checks as well if you don't mind the wait.

The only online room so far that allows for direct local bank transfers is mansion88 (same as mansion on the Ongame network). There are other local/asian poker rooms that runs on a credit system with its players (borderline illegal :p)

USD 300 a month is not enough especially in KL. Including rental i would recommend at least USD 1200-1500. imo i wouldn't recommend living in KL itself. Go check out the satellite cities surrounding KL like Bandar Utama, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Mont Kiara (mostly expats), Hartamas, Petaling Jaya and Bangsar.

The poker community here is small but healthily growing (i would like to believe ). If you do come here, check out http://www.pokermalaysia.com. I'm one of the admins there and it's basically just a simple forum set up to gather the few local poker enthusiasts and to make live games easily available (we got two 'poker rooms' running almost everyday and some willing hosts for home games as well). Don't bother going to Genting for poker. The only initiatives they made so far were organizing freeroll donkaments that awards NCC chips and having HE tables against the house :smirk:. Matt Savage and APPT tried to make headways here but so far no success :(. Philippines has the largest poker community in this region and now hopefully Macau, with the advent of APT and APPT.

Enjoy your stay and enjoy the food!

Well I can say that I am trying to make poker happen at Genting so stay tuned as it looks like a major tournament is in the near future.

BTW, I am at Genting right now for the MTV Asia music awards as we had another one of those freerolls for local players

i was born and raised in malaysia but moved to New Zealand 6 years ago. Been considering moving to back to malaysia and just pay the bills by playing online. I heard there are a few open home games in Kuala Lumpur but the stakes are pretty low.

What i would like to ask is whether or not will I be able to use my Neteller card to withdraw funds in Malaysia (or Thailand)?

Neteller is banned here in Thailand. I have to call up a friend in the UK so they can withdraw for me, if I log on here my account will be frozen. I don't know about malaysia though

What about Penang ? Is it realistic to live there with, lets say $1000 per month including all (rent, healt insurance etc.) ?
I have heard, that online poker would be legal in Malaysia but in this thread its stated that this not true ?
And what about taxes ? Do i have to pay tax on poker income if this is my only source of income or a residental tax ?

Btw, Genting (the casino) now has No Limit Hold Em poker, played via PokerPro tables. There are plans for future introduction of live poker tables there too.

If you are in town, and looking for games, do PM me or check out http://pokermalaysia.wordpress.com

If you're looking for something that cheap you're probably broke, thus it wouldn't be a good idea to move to another country far away on that budget.

Aside from that you'd get visa issues as I assume you aren't a malaysian citizen.

From my limited knowledge modern apartments in KL aren't too cheap - 500$ upwards, unless you want to live like the poorer locals.

Journeyman's right. Plus broadband issues! Broadband access is spotty around the country, with the exception of Klang Valley and even then, there are outages. Imagine if you are in a key hand, and your connection goes down...

Re: Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia - Poker

I've lived in both Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. You can technically get by with $300 usd and I feel bad for you if you have to do that. Depends on how you wanna live I think $1k usd is pretty much minimum here for a comfy but not too baller lifestyle. That number does not include a car. Malaysia is one of the most expensive place in the world to own a car. A brand new 2.4L Toyota Camry costs more than $50k usd for example.

The main problem will be reliable broadband connection. There are a few major providers here but none of them are close to the standard of what you get in the States. I have 2 different service providers and I switch between them when one is not working and I have to switch a lot. It's strange in a way that most of the time, the problem only exists for connection to the poker sites, web browsing works fine in most cases. I have yet to figure out why that is.

All the major sites can be accessed from here. Stars, FTP, Party, etc. If you already have accounts then it shouldn't be a huge problem for you to play here. Just make sure you let them know ahead of time that you'll be logged in from Malaysia during this period. As far as how to get money out, I'm sure you can still use whatever your usual methods to deposit and cash out and use your ATM cards here. It's a lot more complicated if you're thinking about opening accounts after you get here. PM me if you need more info on that.

There's no need to worry about Malaysia being a Muslin country. Malaysia is probably the most unique place in the world. There are 3 major different races with their own appearance, languages, religions, cultural differences, food, etc. Yet we've been able to coexist for so many years without much problems between us. Food is awesome.

The night life is awesome in KL. But not with the 1k usd budget though. If you can afford it KL is one of the best and cheapest place for night life. I haven't been to Bangkok in a while and from what I heard it's a lot better than KL though. Hookers and blows are easy to come by I think, if that's what you're looking for.

If you like beaches, there are some pretty world class but relatively unknown places in Malaysia. Islands like Redang, Tioman etc are awesome. Langkawi is a little too touristy for my taste.

Genting Casino has NL holdem now. It's played on Pokerpro tables. Rake is ridiculous. 5% uncapped for 10/20 game. Most people can't play and they buy in short. Minimum is 100 and i've seen people do that. Other than that you'll have to know the right people to get into home games.

There are 6 countries that are a $30 flight from KL that would be a much better place to live as a pro poker player. I cannot think of any advantage that Malaysia holds over Thailand, Philipines or even Indonesia at all.

Malaysia is a pretty boring place to be honest.

I'm going to Penang from Monday, and then will be in KL/Genting Highlands hopefully on the Fri and Sat evenings. If anyone is around/keen for a drink let me know.

Where is a good hotel for the KL part of my trip?

Does the casino there suck balls? I'll probably pop in there for a bit as I hear they have PokerPro tables and I'd like to give them a go.

Few posts on PokerPro at Genting, so let me correct some information on it.

(1) The tables are located in the International Room of the Genting Casino. There are only 2 tables at Genting.

(2) The game at Genting is either 5/10 or 10/20. Minimum buy-in on the 5/10 table is 50, max of 1,000. Minimum buy-in on the 10/20 table is 100, max of 2,000.

(3) The rake at Genting is 5%, capped at 100 on either the 5/10 or 10/20 table.

(4) The tables alternate between being full on some nights, and dead on others. Mostly dead. More sharks than fish, based on what I observe (Have been playing there since Sept 08).

Now, all the above information is now moot (but may be useful if they decide to reintroduce it) as the PokerPro tables at Genting have been terminated / discontinued since early this week. The machines have been dismantled. The reason was they couldn't get a consistent group of players in on all nights.

Anyway, we have got 8 of the Genting 5/10,10/20 players playing at our poker room at the moment, so thankfully, we have an alternative for 5/10 games  We play 1/2, 2/5, Turbo Double or Nothing SnG, 50:30:20 SnG and we are adding 5/10 from next week - if anyone wants to join up, you can send me a private message or drop us a note at kl(dot)poker(dot)room(at)gmail.com.
